Issue with Dyson Gen5 Motorhead

Hi, I bought a Dyson Gen5 on a recent deal from Bing Lee. The vacuum comes with a hard floor head with a laser and a motorhead for carpet etc.

I have an issue with the motorhead not spinning when I use it on carpet. It spins fine then on hard floor but stops as soon as I try to vacuum carpet with it. I called up Dyson and they eventually, after 3 weeks, sent me a new motorhead but I have the same problem with that.

My carpet is a thicker pile carpet but I had had no issues with Dyson v6 on it before or any other vacuum. I wanted to check if any of you had a similar experience?

It is still under 30 days delivery for Bing Lee, so maybe I just pack it up and send it back and buy other one or call up Dyson and see what they have to say. It does work fine otherwise on hard floors.

motorhead not spinning when i use it on carpet

Don't use it on your carpet, maybe your carpet is too thick for the motorhead.

Call up Dyson and see what they have to say.

I have the Gen5 and the motor head will stop rotating when there is too much resistance (to protect the motor from burn out presumably) if you don’t keep it constantly moving over the carpet. Always set on Auto/medium too, full power is too much for our carpet.

  • High pile thick shag carpet is the worst. Lower strength doesn’t mean lower results in my usage cause pile is so thick most debris is at surface level

Open the vents on the front to maximum

    • This. There's a -/+ slider on the front edge. Set it to minus.

  • Older Dyson with the triggers you could kinda control the power. Worked well on high pile carpet.

Now with the latest one you just have to swipe it fast so it doesn’t stop the power.

  • The old v6 and roborock s8 and the ducted vacuums a lil work fine on this carpet even though it is of the thicker kind.

Will give the suggestions mentioned above a go and report back

  • A quick update, followed the suggestions above and managed to get it working. I had set the vent to minus which prevented it from stopping and working on the carpet. I then have to move it a bit quicker than normal and it does the job without stopping.
