Does This Exist Locally? PIR Controlled Power Socket

We have some of the formidable Ikea Fortnufigigigjiggy air purifiers in one of our rooms, and I'd like them to turn on automatically when someone steps into the room. Amazon have these, however, they are for an overseas plug. No luck on the bunnings website or ebay either.

Are these not allowed in Aus? Is there another way we can (motion) automate the function of our air purifiers?

Grab a motion sensor and a smart plug and use homeassistant for an automation

      • Thanks for the suggestion @boomramada, although I'm hesitant to add yet another ecosystem/app. I just found the Grid Connect version!

        • I have a feeling you need something like this https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005477612297.html as you want it to be turned on when someone is in the room and turned off when they leave the room?. Don't think PIR going to work for your needs.

        • I suggest you work towards one of the major home automation platforms: Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa or if you enjoy the journey as much as the destination, Home Assistant.

    • Which type of sensor and smart plug? We have home assistant and the Grid Connect (Arlec) network, however I believe the Grid Connect PIR sensor requires an additional hub.

      • plenty of zigbee motion sensors on aliexpress for around $6. Presuming you have a zigbee controller. If not, can also be had on aliexpress for around $30. I personally havent bought any smart plugs for years and am not using any in my current setup. But I did have tplink as they allowed local control, also I got one of the generic ones from Bunnings, can't remember the brand, it used Tuya servers but I flashed it with tasmota for local control.
My advice is years old though.

surely an air purifier will be useless unless its been on for hours. if someone walks into the room for a few minutes and back out, nothing drastic would have changed.

    • Good point! We have two of them running on the highest settings in an indoor, 4-sqm home gym. Based off other reviews (like this one), the air in the room should be reasonably filtered within 15+ mins.

      • Which, sadly, is about 12 minutes longer than my average workout…

      • 4sqm

        Do you mean 4 x 4 or literally 4sqm?

        I thought my 2.5 x 2.5 internal home gym was small…

        • sorry, yes you're right; 16sqm 😅

      • It's all about the volume of your room and how bad the air is. If it's bad, you probably need to use it for a while, depending on the unit's efficiency or maybe you don't need it at all.

You could get a Dyson air purifier, which you could fully automate with the HA and also it tell us how much pollutant is in the air, just saying lol :)

  • Timer switch?

    • The room gets used at different times throughout the day/night, so a timer won't quite do..
