It was my first offence what are my chances of claiming that I thought I had seen a 'left turn on red' sign and getting out of it?

Actually from NSW hadn't updated profile :D
lol of if $282 was way too generous, you appeal for multiple fines!
I thought I had seen a 'left turn on red' sign and getting out of it.
Maybe you can travel back to the intersection to verify whether there really is a Left Turn on Red sign there?
These are silly road signs though, as not every state has it. I first got my license in Queensland back in the 90's. I got horned many times from behind when I moved to NSW because I did not turn left when it's red…
Anyway, from previous thread someone asked the chance of contest the fine, and that didn't go very well.
Did you stop at the light?
You might find some useful information in this previous thread
You can get your fine reviewed. Details on this page. Read the pdf.
Didn't stop.
They are pretty strict when it comes to these laws. I got docked $600 for driving with my rego 4 days out. Wrote a letter explaining I was overseas and hadn't received the rego renewal notice but didn't help.
The official leniency policies in NSW require 10 years driving with no offence I believe.
Were you pulled over by a cop or was it a camera? You may have a better chance of contesting it in court if the officer who issued the fine believed you but still gave you the fine. The review booklet lists the only circumstances they will consider for a review (have you had your licence ten years with no points?). http://www.sdro.nsw.gov.au/lib/docs/misc/br_001.pdf
The other alternative is to fight it in court, but that is generally not worth it.7 years haha so close! yeah I will just bite the bullet :D
Well, You didn't stop. The sign probably said. Left on Red after "STOPPING".
Don't stress, here's what you do.
1. Find an intersection with a "left turn permitted after stopping" sign.
2. Borrow the sign and nail it at the intersection you got fined.
3. Take a photo and send it in with the appeal and claim the policeman gave you a fine based on the fact you didn't stop and not that you ran a red light. Claim you did stop and you have a clean driving record etc.
4. Problem solved and you gained yourself a good story.you sir should write books for a living
Sorry I know this is in bad taste but maybe claim that you were actually texting, which is cheaper at $282. ;)
Seriously no idea. Maybe Canberra has some leniency provisions.
