Japan has always been prone to earthquakes.

      • +1

This one is a bit different and I can understand any anxieties people can have..even Japan’s own meteorological agency estimates a couple hundred thousand causalities when this Nankai trough mega quake eventually hits.

I typed out a long reply but probably better to do your own research if interested

        • Hasn’t it been coming for 200 years?

        • +2

Not going to claim expert on the situation, but I work with a lot of people that frequent Japan, i do myself and we have a team over there that we talk to daily. This mega quake has been predicted for 30+ years, its coming, no one can really tell when its going to happen, just that it will likely be absolutely catastrophic. Every so often there will be a movement or something to spike interest and it gets talked about again(see last month) but in reality its one of those things where no one can really tell when its going to happen, just that its going to. I actually mentioned it to a coworker there and they simply said, oh yes we hear that occasionally, not much we can do about it, and continued talking business.

By all means do your research and Japan is doing its best to set up warning systems but the nature of earthquakes means they can only do so much, the true reality is that no one actually knows when it is going to happen, its far harder to predict these than say a tsunami - which Japan is very prepared for, so no matter how much research you do, it really comes down to how you want to manage the risk.

      • -4

There's always a risk. But the risk increases when certain things are identifed. Which is what has occured.

Make your own decision on what risks you're willing to take. But don't bury your head in the sand. Make an informed decision.

        • -3

Why exactly are you voting me down?

          • +1

@PainToad: Dont bury your head in the sand

  • +3

    P- Perth..?

  • looks like flights into Haneda are bit more expensive than Narita, don't really fancy almost 2 hour train ride into Toyko from Narita

    • +1

Which train are you catching as even the Keisei local isn’t two hours. If you want to get in quick, just use the Keisei skyliner and change at Nippori Station.

    • I've done Haneda and Narita and honestly prefer the train from Narita as you have 2 dedicated express trains (Skyliner, N'ex) with ample luggage and reserved seating. So much more relaxing than standing on the train from Haneda. Also depends on where you are staying in Tokyo.

      • +1

That is a benefit of the special trains out of Narita. Another option is the Limousine Buses to both airports with usual have good space under the coach for luggage and they can also be economical services too.

Last few times I have been flying in and out of Haneda and haven't had too much issues with full trains, even on the Yamanote line which even at 6pm I was able to easily get a seat. If you do switch to Monorail, always go on the express service.

    • +1

      45mins mate, just did it

    • Its really not that bad, the train moves fast and its usually pretty quiet and its closer to an hour.. The annoying part is from memory its quite expensive, like 50 dollars pp or something. That may have changed its been a while since I touched down in Narita.

    • As other said, the Limousine buses are a pretty good option too.

  • -7

I hope the Asian auntie don't kick my seat when I recline back. Anyway doesn't look like a good deal to me while the direct fly by ANA/JAL is around 140 bucks more (depart from Sydney).

  • Cathay and Singapore Air are reasonable options if the stopover timing is to your liking and if you want the choice to fly into different airports such as Fukuoka, Sapporo, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo Haneda, or Tokyo Narita.

But book direct so that you don't become a victim of inflexible online travel agents:

Jetstar was awesome, on time, clean, food was okay, 8hrs and no stop over which is a blessing for me.

      • Jetstar was pretty average for me but not the end of the world - weird little discrepancies like not asking us what meal we wanted when we preordered, so when they got to us we could only have rock hard toasties - fair if they ran out but we preordered, the usual practice is to ask preordered meals first then sell what's left to the people that didn't preorder. then also failing to mention we had inflight credit til it was basically touch down, just horrible miscommunication the whole way through.

What really killed it was the delay in Cairns waiting for a new FA to come due to an illness. All good these things happen and they can't help that. But we spent like 6 hours in Cairns airport with no consolation prize for the experience, they waited until 20 minutes to boarding to tell everyone they had a $10 meal voucher to use at the one (extremely overpriced) cafe that was there.

I get it, budget airline and all that, but the first set of faults mentioned weren't a budget thing, they were just doing a bad job and I am really not sure why..

        • That's weird, when I booked, I pre-booked the meals for each of us a few days prior and gave myself the $15 credit as I didn't want any of their selections. I was approached first (as a few others were) advising of the credit and what would I like, then the others got their pre-booked meals as per the selection that I did for them.

That is just bad luck with the FA, but any airline probably would have taken that long to find another staff member. Not sure about Cairns, but when that happened to us in Canberra many years ago, we all got a credit as soon as we were off-boarded. However we had lounge access through insurance with more than a 2hr delay, so didn't worry us.

But Qantas and Virgin are just as bad, Qantas more so from what you read and they are far from budget.

          • @BatmanAU: Yeah I think it was just a once off failure, not a consistent thing, but the fact that it happened on both legs, on departure and return was really annoying. No blame on them for the FA issue, they have regs to adhere to and all that, totally understand it is what it is, and its not like Cairns is flush with replacement attendants.

Honestly all Australian carriers are pretty average. I contacted Emirates a few years back, they happily "transferred" my frequent flier points and now I basically exclusively use them, annoying that most of my trips begin with Sydney to Dubai but it is what it is, their planes and staff are gorgeous. For Japan ill stick to JAL or ANA, they know how to get the job done.

At least with jetstar you are getting the budget ticket prices along with the budget service, I agree qantas and virgin are basically scams at this point, budget dressed up as premium. Qantas FA are treated pretty poorly too, majority of the force is on an employment agency set up, no surprises they don't have much pride in the company if the company wants to keep them at arms length, treat them like that and they are always just going to treat the job as an income and nothing more.

            • @doobey1231: Airlines, especially Qantas just reach for top dollar for shareholders and stuff the flier.

How has JAL and ANA been, I was looking at them before I grabbed Jetstar deal, mind you they were nearly double the price

              • -2

@BatmanAU: Those two are ranked amount the best services in the world.

I did notice that some ANA planes are older but in good condition. Food wise you really can't beat them….

              • @BatmanAU: Honestly incredible, the kind of airline where if you can deal without the laydown seats, business class almost seems like a waste - obviously overstating that, but they are seriously delightful to fly with, as you would expect with the Japanese culture, you can see the pride and care they take in the job.

  • +1

prices for canberra sucks, best to fly to and out of cairns or sydney to get a ozbargain deal.

    • +1

That’s what happens when you let an airport be privatised.

      • Its not necessarily the airport charges, its just that the Qantas fare is tacked onto the price (The taxes are higher at CBR but this in the tens of dollars not hundreds).

I'm hoping CX do eventually serve CBR (They have a plan to expand to 100+ destinations from their current 83), as this would hopefully bring more competitive fares out of Canberra.

You just have to look at Depansar, since Batik has added it's service, Qantas has been a lot more competitive, even offering a $700 return fare out of CBR.

  • -1

Anyone know points+ taxes for this Cathay flight? Guessing this is better value as a cashie?

  • About to use their services but couldn't wait for this type of deal. So, there is a stopover. Let's see how much I like Japan to come back again.

  • I'm looking to fly to Japan towards the end of next year (October/November) - does anyone know roughly when tickets for that time period go on sale?

    • +1

Booking go on sale starting 11 or 12 months out so watch out for bargains then.

  • is there nothing from perth? weird that there is to korea..

  • +1

For Cairns/Sydney/Brisbane - I guess it comes down to whether that extra 5+ hours in transit compared to a direct flight is worth the ~200$ saving.

  • Just don't recline your seat if you speak mandarin, won't be a bargain then!

  • Wouldn't it be worth it to go direct with JAL only about ~$130 extra

    • There are advantages and disadvantages with both.

If you are just heading to Tokyo out of Melbourne and Sydney, besides the cheaper fare, there isn't much advantage.

If you want to take off or land at any other Japanese airport like Fukuoka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kansai and both airports in Tokyo, Cathay usually charges a similar amount to travel to these airports.

If you have Qantas Gold or higher, the Cathay lounges are tops in HKG, especially the pier.

  • +2

With the amount of grub bogans causing issues in Japan lately, I'd rather all flights just cost $3000 instead.

    • over-tourism

    • So glad I went back in 09 when it was still pretty uncommon for Australian to go.

The people there were so friendly and polite. The thought of feral bogans representing our country over there is terrible.
