Google Pay Double Verification

Anyone else noticed that even if your phone is unlocked you still need to then verify via fingerprint when trying to pay with Google Pay.

I'm on an S24 Ultra.

And most of the time it doesn't show up until you actually tap your phone on the terminal.

There's lots of talk about it on the Google Help site and seems there 0 fix to it.

My question now is should I change to Samsung Pay? Does it do the same double verification?

I found this > https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/490784 but it's 5 years old now…

Anyone using Samsung Pay out there?

What is the question relating to your poll options?

    • A poll is always good. Wanted to know if Samsung Pay was a better alternative to Google Wallet

Doesn't act that way for me on my previous and current Oppo phones. I imagine you have a setting somewhere which requires it, but can't offer any help on that front.

    • It's only recently just been doing this. All the forum posts online show the same :(

I used google pay a couple of times on the weekend without that issue.

        • Don't update your device then. Probably being rolled out depending on what youre using

It started occurring after the last Samsung update for me

I believe it's something that got updated in the android security patch not the actual Samsung update. Drives me crazy but I have heaps of stuff on the Google wallet and can't bring myself to change over to Samsung pay.

    • I'm in the same boat but it's driving me nuts haha. I may as well take my physical card, it's easier than the double verification

Try this: wallet settings > verification settings > public transport payments > Turn everything off.

No idea if this will make any difference, but it is worth giving it a go.

    • It won't, as that is only relevant to public transport payments (i.e using a debit/credit card instead of Opal card in Sydney)

It is because Samsung FaceID is not secure. You can pretty much get in with a picture of your face, even on S24 Ultra. The only biometrics that secure Android apps support is fingerprint. Because of this, I put my authenticator apps inside my secure Android folder, which requires my fingerprint to access.

    • I'm not using FaceID, only fingerprint and pin.

      • Did you leave your phone unlocked for a while? I don't think I need to double fingerprint myself to pay, usually it is just fingerprint to unlock my phone and then launch Wallet on my phone screen to pay.

Samsung Pay used to be better than Google Wallet, but that has changed over the last few years, mainly due to card support. I think you might find some cards that can be saved in Google Wallet cannot be saved in Samsung Pay, it used to be the other way around. I would just suck it up and stick with Google Wallet, or maybe consider changing to iPhone because secure authentication is done via FaceID. Lol.

  • this has driven me nuts because my fingerprint scanner is already flakey.

    • Honestly, same… I never thought it would but woweee it really is riding me haha

      • it's so frustrating because I've been suffering from broken skin on my finger tips so the FP doesn't always register on my dodgy phone.

        • Damn, sorry to hear. It's such a backwards step for G Wallet

  • Never used Google Pay, only Samsung. Very clear to understand their privacy policy, the usages in SK and no issues in using here or overseas.

This change has been driving me crazy too..

I like this change - anything to keep my money safer

But I've already used my fingerprint to unlock my device

Noticed this too in the last few weeks. Very very annoying!

  • Google Pay has a trusted unlock feature where things like wearables that unlock your phone don't "unlock it enough" for Google Pay. Same with face unlock I believe.

  • I orginally thought it was the faceid thing geek001 mentioned.
    Doesn't happen on Pixel.

I've had this happen to me randomly over the last few months. It propper sharts me because I unlock my phone, pay, pay fails, I unlock again, pay. Sometimes the EFTPOS decides my phone isn't good enough and wants a card and pin so I hit cancel and try again.

    I'm using a Pixel 6a.

Yep, and every single time the cashier looks at me like a goose haha, especially because I don't know if this time is going to need a verification or not.

  • I don't have that issue. Using Pixel 6 Pro with crappy fingerprint sensor.

  • Same phone, same experience / problem!

  • Had the same issue on LG V50, unlock then further verify on each card with another unlock. Annoying.

Haven't seen any way to fix. No settings that would change anything. Got a new Pixel 8 and don't have the issue anymore.
