What Type of Grass Is This?

New house in Brisbane, grass is soft so I don't think its Buffalo, but leaves are wide so I don't think its Kikuyu. Is it a special type/hybrid or do I need to get my eyes checked?

I need to identify so I can determine cut height and what weed killer isn't going to also take out the lawn.

    I reckon it's kikuyu.

Join some lawn groups on FB. They've helped me a lot with my lawn.

    • Thanks. I'm not on Facebook but will have a look.

      I think it’s Green grass.

I've had another look and I think you might be right.

it looks like my grass and i thought my grass was buffalo grass. i gotta admit though when i start looking at grasses it's not long before i start thinking that all grass just looks like all grass. it's like when you go to the paint aisle at the hardware shop and start comparing swatches and before you know it you can't see colour any more.

afaik though the thing that makes it buffalo is that it's got that above-ground root system kind of thing going on? take this with a huge grain of salt though, i am extremely not knowledgeable on this.
disregard this, everybody else disagrees with me.

plantnet.org says it is St Augustine/Sir Walter with 80-90% confidence.

Yeah, looks like Sir Walter to me. Use Bin-Die or another buffalo safe herbicide just in case.

There are apps out there that will let you take a photo and identify it from the photo, one I have is called Picture This which i have identified quite a few different plants and grass in my front and back yards.

  • EDIT. Dig around the soil surface on the edge and you'll find proof by way of the runners and stolons.(If it's kike) Depending on your weed issue Fusilade may help. (tricky) Turf /lawn care websites are your friend.Confusing because both photos show almost different characteristics.

  • Sir Walter

  • Get sone photos of the runners for better identification. My take is its a rype of buffalo. The leaves seem to look like buffalo rather than kikuyu, but the runners will really help identify.

  • I have buffalo grass and the blades are not as wide as yours, other than that it looks like buffalo to me.

The grass in the image appears to be St. Augustine grass (also known as Stenotaphrum secundatum). Here’s how you can tell:

    1. Leaf Texture and Color: St. Augustine grass has broad, flat blades that are typically dark green. The grass in the photo has wide, flat blades, which is characteristic of St. Augustine grass.

    2. Growth Habit: St. Augustine grass tends to grow in a thick, carpet-like manner with stolons (runners) that spread across the surface, which matches the grass in your image.

    3. Blade Tip: The tips of the blades in St. Augustine grass are typically rounded or blunt, rather than pointed, which can be observed in the grass in your image.

    4. Blade Width: The blades of St. Augustine grass are usually around 8-10 mm wide, and the grass in your photo has a similar blade width.

St. Augustine grass is a popular choice in warm coastal regions, particularly in areas with hot, humid summers. It’s known for its ability to thrive in a variety of soil types and conditions, which might explain its presence in your lawn.

The Brisbane Mt Cootha botanical gardens has 4 small plantings of different grasses popular in Brisbane that are labelled. The friendly volunteers in the information centre can show you on a map where.

If you have any trees or bushes you want to identify the QLD herbarium located on site will help. Maybe they do grasses? Go to their website for information.

  • Please contact a grass expert and send them a sample for proper diagnosis.

  • it looks like a type of buffalo, the newer types are softer

pull a runner out and take a pic
