My Google Drive and Photos are almost out of storage (I'm on the free plan), so I started looking for alternatives and came across Koofr, which offers a lifetime deal. I saw some good reviews on Reddit about it.

The company’s been around for a while(10year+) , and, if it lasts more than two years, I’d say it's worth it.
It could connect to your Dropbox, google drive, OneDrive, Facebook and Instagram, which I found useful.

A couple extra downsides when comparing to google drive though

  • The app UI is a bit outdated.
  • No fancy AI features like photo memories.

Doesn’t last your lifetime but the life of the product, which is when the Ponzi scheme comes crashing down.
Even if the company has and will be around for ten years doesn’t mean they have to offer something that’s causing them a loss if they retire it or get bought or bankrupt.

Yep, dodgy as. At first I thought lemonccm was a new member, but I was wrong. Member Since 23/09/2023. Exactly one year. Happy cake day!

Just realise the date lol. thanks.

    • This is a fair point.

1Tb is only €10/month. I'd probably go with that over the lifetime deal, which has loyalty discounts which increase over time. It seems less risky.

You would rather pay €120 Euro for 1TB/year instead of €107 Euro for a lifetime 1TB? Ok.

    • You act like there is no way for this to be sustainable. Storage demands grow over time, and if lifetime users on Koofr want to grow their storage they have to pay €300 for 2.5TB.

Koofr have been around for 11 years, and are one of the most respected and ethical cloud storage providers. They provide their own free & open source client side encryption called Koofr Vault, have an open API that supports rclone/duplicati/etc, and they won't ban your account for uploading encrypted data like Microsoft will(Onedrive).

For cloud storage, to me it's more about data security rather than price.
I will stick with google or Microsoft.

    • They have something called Koofr Vault.

    • +3

Yes, by all means trust the mega corporations with security.. LOL

      • Cryptomator exists!!

        • More talking bout even the big corps can mess up and can lose your data etc (or worse get hacked).

Wasnt there a recent article where some guy had his stuff wiped from googles servers?

    • If you are smart, you encrypt all your data at the client side, regardless of what cloud provider you use.

Microsoft and Google have been compromised in the past. You either encrypt your own stuff or you are foolish.

  • If Google backtracks on their cloud storage promises then these guys definitely will. As mentioned, if file safety is a priority, better to go with a trusted source. This may be beneficial for files you don't care about.

If file safety is a priority, then you encrypt it yourself client-side.

Why do you people rely on the cloud provider for "security"? That is incredibly dumb.

Had this lifetime one with Zoolz. Yeah they changed the deal on you.

Even the Windscribe lifetime is 10 years plus have to email to ask for a 10 year extension.

  • Never heard of it

  • I also gambled on zoolz and was screwed over royally. The lifetime of the product can be ended with effectively no warning.
I hate subscription culture as much as the next person but photos and data are with the cost.

  • Cheaper to buy a Pixel 1 for unl photo storage tbh

    • Agree if OP is just after photo storage.
