VW Brake Pads

Need to get a new pair of brake pads for my VW, don't really care for performance more so after low noise and low brake dust. Got recommended 2 pairs of pads. Is there much difference between them?

You'll need rotors too, so may be worth purchasing matching pads & rotors. I personally mix & match because I buy whatever is cheap, but you can't go wrong with matching Bosch Bendix or Brembo (among others). My Bendix pads on Brembo rotors are squealy; I recently did two Bosch on Bosch replacements and they're faultless.

    • Why do you need new rotors?

Whilst it’s true that if you get new rotors - you should get new pads. The same is not always the case.

Measure the rotors and if they are fine, a light skim is all they need.

Modern cars have soft rotors for maximum braking effectiveness, designed to last as long as the pads. But maybe an automotive tech can comment.

        • You are correct. They generally wear at the same rate as the pads. Even if they are still within the minimum thickness, they won't be by the time the new pads are half way through.

          • @brendanm: Any thoughts on how long a set of rotors and pads should last from new? VW told me my TCross needed full set replacing. It feels early given the car is only 3yrs old and ODO is 40,000km.

            • @Browsers: Generally significantly longer than the dealer tells you, they are known for not being entirely truthful. Easiest way to tell is to go have a look yourself, take some pics and post here if you need.

            • @Browsers: My experience with VW and other dealer workshops is they genuinely don't wish any remedial maintenance issues on you. For cars with annual service intervals, they're weighing up whether you'll make it to next year's service without asking how much mileage you may do in the next 12 months. Next year your odo could well be 65K and your brakes stuffed. If you want to get maximum life be prepared to arrange your own replacement when you're down to metal on metal (unsafe and irritating) or learn to DIY.

            • @Browsers: One of those 'Your mileage might vary…' depends on how much, how and where you drive but to put it into perspective I had the ol dealer tell me I needed brake change and I still got another 2 years out of them.

      • You don't skim VW Rotors. The rotors are treated as consumable same as the pads, it's why you see so much brake dust on euro cars

      • Measure the rotors and if they are fine, a light skim is all they need

Have you ever owned a modern VW or Audi? It is not worth paying the $80 to skim the OEM rotors (which rarely have enough meat left to skim properly) when you can buy a pair of Bosch plain face rotors for $134, Pagid for $155, DBA or genuine Brembo for $260.

Got recommended 2 pairs of pads

That sounds about right. There are four wheels.

    • Four wheels require 4 pairs (2 sets) if discs all round
      .

  • Get a set of ceramic pads if you want low dust, VW people usually go for ATE pads, but those Brembo ones you've linked are probably fine too. Ceramic pads are usually more kind to your discs in terms of wear also.

    • +1 ATE ceramics.

Bendix Euro for one of my cars has been noisy as fk, so I'd avoid them.

  • I have the Brembo NAO ceramic pads in my daily, highly rate them. Even tracked them, been great.

Im running Brembo NAO ceramic pads in my daily which with dba t2 rotors and gone are the days of brown dust! These perform just as well if not better than oem too.

  • Fitted Bosch rotors and Brembo NAO Series Premium Ceramic pads (all bought from Automotive Superstore) to my Peugeot, love them. Much less dust, quiet and good performance. Got the lot for under $200 and fitted myself.

  • Any sort of ceramic will lower dust. As mentioned above, the rotors will also need replacement. Downside of ceramic is lack of initial bite. I personally prefer the bite over the low dust.

    • I was driving the Alltrack today and commented how I'll be happy when the fronts are worn and I can fit something with less initial bite.

That signature VW initial "through the windscreen" grab is so annoying. The Octavia was the same until I did the 312mm upgrade and (2nd hand) GTI pads.

I love the grab. Touaregs always seem short of initial bite, so I went with Pagid semi-metallics in GG compound, much nicer.

Get the genuine Brembo Ceramic with Brembo rotors.

I assume u have the 312mm fronts but you don't say what VW u have.

SuperSpares has Brembo rotors on eBay for $157 delivered and the NAO pads for $95

You do realise the pads you linked to are rears?
