Cheap Tyres for Subaru Forester and Store Recommendations

Hi, I am after new tyres for Subaru Forester.

Can you please recommend a cheap tyre brand and store names in Sydney? Usage isn't more than 10k-15k a year so I am not looking for a top of the range tyres. Any options with a good promo/ discount would work.

Thanks in advance!

  • What's the size & speed rating on your tyre placard?

      • +1

My suggestion for what it's worth; you need V-rated. If you prefer cheaper but standby, Winrun hate is incoming

        • Winrun seems to have great reviews!

          • +1

@virhlpool: I know a happy Winrun customer but last time I suggested them here I got run out of town. They”re one of the cheaper brands that are well regarded.

OP should check their owners manual which will state the size and rating of tyres that should be used.

Alternatively some Sydney tyre shop web sites will do that for you and then list all tyres with prices that fit.

In Sydney go to the following tyre shop web sites whilst provide all the information you need:
      St George Tyres
      Tempe Tyres

Also OP should decide between CHEAP tyres and GOOD tyres.

My opinion is that you put GOOD tyres on a Subaru Forester unless its getting fairly old

      • +1

You should check the post, OP has already provided that.

  • Visit https://www.google.com/maps/search/tyer/
    Pick one from the list
    Ask..

Another option is Costco or wait till the next mycar sale.

Jax currently have a buy 3 get 1 free promotion on Hankook tyres.

    • +1, pretty sure we had these or similar on our Forester and they were fine.

    • I have the Prime3 on one of my cars. Very good wear lasting pretty long, comfortable and brakes pretty well in the wet. Hankook is OE supplier for some of Audi Mercedes BMW and Porsche cars.

  • If you can wait until november black friday sales, mycar has 1/2 price pirellis. Bob jane or similar should have buy 3 get 1 free deals. It's worth spending a little extra and getting some good tyres, good rubber makes a big difference in your safety.

theres tyroola and tyresales too, that might be worth a look.

      • tempe tyres used to be pretty good too, not sure about now.

        • +1

autohero and tyregeek are probably worth checking too.

    • Can't wait, unfortunately. I need the tyres before pink slip which is due soon.

  • I'm so sorry to hijack this thread, but I didn't want to make a new one b/c I am also interested in the same thing as OP.
I took a picture of the inside of my car door to find my tyre size and there's three sizes on the plate, so I'm really confused.
Anyone know which tyre I should buy? Or does the three of them mean that I can fit any three sizes?

(Thanks in advance and soz for hijack again!)

    • Your image doesn't load (for me anyway)

Check the sizing on your current tyres. Probably something like 195/45R15.

The fiesta had three options depending on the trim level.

      • Gosh, trim level … I don't have a clue what this means 😐

    • I uploaded it to a different site now:

      • +1

The first tyre 185/55R15 is for the base model
The second is the zetec model.
The third is the spare (if fitted) and is speed limited.

None of these tyres are interchangeable on your current rims.

Upload a picture of your current tyre so we can help you.

        • Thank you for your help 😀
I'm so useless at these things.

@loginid: You need the 185/55R15 tyre.

            • @MS Paint: ok, thank you!

              • +3

@loginid: No problems. This is all the info you need here

185 is the tyre width in mm
55 is a % ratio of the tyre sidewall to width
15 is the diameter of the rim in inches
86 is the load rating (how much weight per tyre)
V is the speed rating (maximum speed tyre can handle safely before sending you off a cliff)

          • +1

@loginid: Don't beat youself up, tyre purchasing is one of the most opaque motor vehicle transactions. You've got Contis which I love, so just get another set… but I've realised there may not be be any v-rated ones around. I have these Kumhos and recommend theml but I've noticed load rating is too low.

Contis are a bit more expensive https://www.mycar.com.au/tyres/continental/techcontact-tc6/1…

Usage isn't more than 10k-15k a year so I am not looking for a top of the range tyres.

That doesn't make any sense. One of my cars I only do about 3k km per year but I want top of the range tyres. Go figure.

    • +2

The type of driving is more important than the km in my opinion. The cheap Chinese tyres are fine for slow, passive, city driving but if you are doing some highway or busy suburban roads it's worth paying more for the premium brands.

  • Cheap Tyres and Store Recommendations

    Black Friday, MyCar, half price.

  • +9

Yeah I dunno, tyres are one of those things I don't cheap out on - good ones will be much more likely to save your ass in a bad situation.

  • +1

Costco. They also have buy 3 get 1 free deals.

    • -1

Does one need to be a member? Do they fit the tyres (and realign) as well?

      • +1

Yes. You need to be a member, but you can cancel your membership and get a refund. They do tyre installation, balancing and rotation. They do not do alignments.

  • -1

FB Marketplace or Gumtree if you don't mind used tyres.

  • Go to nearest tyre seller. Ask for their recommendations and a price.

Go to second nearest tyre seller and repeat

Go to third nearest and repeat.

Theyll all have a range of tyres from buget to expensive. Choose a combination of grip, noise, longevity and price according to your desire based on questions asked of the sellers.

Noone should be recommending ANY tyres without asking about what you expect in regard to noise, grip, longevity. You cant have it all. Generally its: grip, longevity, price - pick any two.

  • +3

Generally, cheaper tyres will have inferior stopping power and overall grip. Considering the only things stopping your 2 tonne car from hitting someone/something is 4 small patches of rubber, this is one thing never to cheap out on. A good set of Michelin, Hankook, Continentals will be well worth the price. For your size, you're looking around $800-1000 for a good set.

    What I'd go for - https://www.costco.com.au/Tyres-Automotive/Tyres/Michelin-22…

  • Probably not a good idea to cheap out on tyres

  • +1

We just put the second set of Michelin Primacy SUV tyres from Jax on our forester. The first set got about 80,000 km and still had a reasonable amount of tread left. They definitely aren’t the cheapest tyres but they last well and are grippy for their whole lifespan.
We tried cheap tyres once and changed them after 10,000km because they felt so dangerous to drive on.

    • +1 for Michelin Primacy's. Not the cheapest tyres but arguably one of the best bang for your buck choices. Relatively good grip in the wet and decent life. Can sometimes get buy 3 get 1 free from Costco.
