Hey,
bouncing ideas around at the moment.
I want to install a motorised pergola inside an existing frame that currently has fixed louvres. The external frame is fixed to the house but the internal dimensions are all standard, 2x3m, though there is one non-straight side.
All of the Australian online shops for these things look like they sell the same thing. Dimensions are all the same, though some have a few extra sizes and the images all look the same. Even the websites have the same look/feel. Prices for what I want range from 5-10k. I can handle the minor modifications to fit my use but would void any warranty, which is fine, they aren't complicated, just lots of extruded aluminium. I can swap a blade or motor easily.
I had a look on aliexpress and they look like the same thing but at half the cheapest price I can get locally. I suspect they're all made in China and shipped anyway. I'm thinking about ordering one panel to see what it's like. Even if I can only use half of it and the motor doesn't work I have a use for it. Nothing I can find anywhere really fits how I want it installed so I'm going to need to modify it slightly anyway and it'll make an interesting project.
Has anyone ever ordered something like this from aliexpress and have an idea on if this sort of thing is worthwhile or possible?
It will be installed compliant with the relevant building codes, it's not a structural component of my house. Not looking to cheap out on safety.
All I can say is:
Pay using a method with protection if things go pear shaped (no item shipped, wrong item shipped etc)
Find a reputable seller
Check and double check for any relevant duties and freight charges that will apply. Im not sure what the final package size will be but most likely not something they can just get the postie to chuck in the letterbox.
