Cheapest EV in The Market

I’ve been looking into making the switch to an electric car (EV) and, like many of you, I want to get the best deal possible. There’s been a lot of buzz around the growing EV market in Australia, and I’m curious to know: What’s the cheapest electric car available right now?

Here are some questions I’m hoping the community can help answer:

What’s the most affordable EV on the market today? Any hidden costs to watch out for (like charging infrastructure, servicing, etc.)?

Has anyone seen price drops or promotions for EVs recently, or do you think they’ll get cheaper towards the end of the year?

Are there any government incentives (Victoria) or rebates I should be aware of that could make buying now more appealing?

Would it be smarter to wait until the end of the year for a better deal? I’ve heard rumours that prices might drop as competition heats up and more models enter the market. Plus, are there any new EVs launching soon that are worth waiting for?

I’m leaning towards waiting till the end of the year, as I know companies sometimes offer deals around the holidays, and there could be new government incentives or tax breaks introduced. But I don’t want to miss out on a great deal if now’s the perfect time to buy!

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and advice. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Edit: Thank you all! Going to organise an MG4 test drive!

What has your own research surrounding these topics yielded so far?

    Low effort post tbh
MG4 deal was literally on the main deals page

    • Not wrong but I did miss it :( sorry!

If only there was a site, where there were numerous recent posts about EV deals, price drops, and discussions. It would have taken less time to search the forum and deals than however long it took you to compose that post.

    Eg
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/electric-vehicle

    • Damn man I didnt even know that was an option!

You don't want the absolute cheapest EV on the market, otherwise you're diving into first gen EVs on hybrid platforms with tiny batteries. The best cheap EV on the market is currently the MG4. There's a very good drive away deal now. Whether it'll get cheaper… do you have a crystal ball?

    • Mirror mirror on the ball, whos the cheapest of them all

Troll post, yeah?? There has been two massive threads about this in only the last 24 hours…

    Anyway, to join the shitpost…

What’s the most affordable EV on the market today?

MG4… Recently reduced up to $10k in some states, now down to $31k drive away.

Any hidden costs to watch out for (like charging infrastructure, servicing, etc.)?

Yeah, insurance costs. There is a premium for EV's because most panel shops are knuckle draggers and dont want to touch EV's for fear of them exploding or some such bullshit. Also, DC fast chargers are not as cheap as you think. Last one I charged at was $0.60/kWh. Cost me a whole $24 to charge my car. Servicing should be cheaper and less frequent than petrol cars, unless it's a BYD and Eager's Automotive wants their service extortion money.

Has anyone seen price drops or promotions for EVs recently

    Literally yes

do you think they’ll get cheaper towards the end of the year?

Yes, this is MG setting the price and I would expect GWM to respond. BYD wont, because they have their head so far up their own arse, they think they are the Mercedes Benz of China. Other Chinese brands will be landing here soon that will have similar cheap offerings, so that may be on the cards as well.

Are there any government incentives (Victoria) or rebates I should be aware of that could make buying now more appealing?

State level, for Victoria, no, they were one of the first states to get rid of EV incentives. Federal level would be the novated leasing FBT exemptions for salary sacrafice cars pre-tax. Speak to your accountant about it.

Would it be smarter to wait until the end of the year for a better deal?

Sure, if you are always going to be afraid of spending money, why not wait some more. You may get a deal in early 2025 on a late 23 or 24 runout model. Save a few $$'s more come 2025…

I’ve heard rumours that prices might drop as competition heats up and more models enter the market.

Correct. This is just the start. But no one has a crystal ball to know how long or how far prices will drop.

are there any new EVs launching soon that are worth waiting for?

Meh, pretty much the same same, but different. The MG is a known quantity. People have experience with them here… a Zeekr 007, well, still untested here in Australia, but who knows, if the price is right…

I’m leaning towards waiting till the end of the year, as I know companies sometimes offer deals around the holidays

You will be aiming at "run out models". So. models that have last years build plate on them. Moving them to make way for the new 2025 models. You are not going to get a "deal" on a 2025 model come start of 2025, but you could get a ripper deal on a 2023 or 2024 model.

and there could be new government incentives or tax breaks introduced.

That ship has well and truly sailed. I highly doubt they would introduce or re-introduce more incentives. Lower prices are already an incentive. Dont wait around to see if the state government might just start handing out incentives again, because unless there is a target they need to meet, they dont really give a (fropanity)

But I don’t want to miss out on a great deal if now’s the perfect time to buy!

Never is the only right time to buy, because there is always going to be something you miss right around the corner. Get what you want, when you need it. Dont worry about what ifs. Get the best price you can in the moment, at that moment and just enjoy your new car.

      Summed it up well.

      • Well, I wouldn’t really use the words “summed up” in this case. But Christ, OP could have saved all that by just using the search function…

        • +1

Unfortunately youve just perpetuated the problem of open question with no research done.

          • @Euphemistic: Meh, I thought I would do a write up for the 3 out of 100 people that do use the search function… :D

Thank you so much for this!!!!

"There’s been a lot of buzz around the growing EV market in Australia.."

That's only because we haven't caught up with Europe yet. :)

    https://techstory.in/eu-ev-sales-crash-44-car-market-marks-3…

By all means get an EV if you think it is the best vehicle for your use case, but getting it because of 'the buzz' or wanting to keep up with the Greenzes probably isn't a smart idea IMO.

    • Nah I can buy it via my company without FBT so a huge advantage of giving in my own cash!

  • Hello all! Just wanted to say thank you so much for everyones advice! Bought a black pearl gloss for the drive away price :D
Probably could have pushed for more add on if required.
