Concrete Expansion Joint Options

Getting a driveway done and wanted opinions from concreters or others in the know as to what they think is the best expansion joint to use.

Driveway connects to existing concrete carport where joint filler will be placed. The area is exposed to rain and elements.

From my knowledge the options are-
- Bitumen Fibre Board
- Cork Jointing (Type 3)
- Expansion Foam
- Stiff Joint Foam

Also as a secondary if a top sealant is required what would you recommend.

My initial preference was Cork Joint with Sikaflex.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cork or caulk?

  • What did the concreter say when you asked him?

He burst into tears and said he didn’t know he usually just asks the professionals at Australia’s foremost bargain sharing community, and that he hopes OP isn’t made at him

Mate, no one is using cork joint, it is only reserved for government and council job when they have a lot to spend. Do you know how much that think would cost? Bitumen joint is good enough. Sikaflex is useless if you don't secure the new slab against existing one, especially if you're on a slope. There is also better alternative such as a connolly key joint stuff with capping that'd offer nice finish but it of course comes with a cost.

    • There are pour in Sika products as fell as the caulking type. I think you're right about the 'actual' Sikaflex stuff. It would need a pretty pristine surface(dry/clean/dust free) to make it work.

  • just put no expansion joints in, its not like any tradies in australia follow the australian standards anyway

yeah nah, she'll be bloody right mate, send it

Do your best and silicon the rest.

  • When my mate pours, he comes back and puts saw cuts in after it's dried a day or 2 later.

  • 10mm Ableflex for the length of the EJ.
After concrete has cured, use Dowsil 888 silicon joint sealant to seal the top 10mm of the joint.
