Imini 2 seems interesting, thanks https://www.olightstore.com.au/olight-imini-2-rechargeable-l…

For $8 I'll check it out

  • -2

I refuse to support a manufacturer that supports a proprietary battery system. Call this feature feedback.

    • +2

Some Olight torches does use a proprietary battery, but the torches in this deal are just standard battery (AAA and 10180).

      • -7

Many olight torches do. And they can say it uses a 10180, but it's sealed. So you can't swap it (at least not without voiding warranty). Which is even worse.

        • +6

And they can say it uses a 10180, but it's sealed. So you can't swap it

          Olight mini 2 disassembled:

The threads were glued, but at last I was able to unscrew the tail cap with my bare hands.

The battery is replaceable, but sourcing a new battery will most likely cost more than buying another one.

            • +3

@Ademos: If you're worried about voiding warranty, why are you swapping the battery?

If it's under warranty - great, get a replacement under warranty.

If the warranty has expired, open it up and replace the battery.

              • +1

@OZKap: Interesting that my comments had many upvotes until 0200-0800 hit and they got bombed, isnt it chief.

The point is there is a galaxy of competitors that dont even try this vendor lock in nonsense, and it is unconscionable.

You swap the battery for use ability. For fixing it yourself. For preventing e waste when it's end of life. For using a better external charger that can recover dead/discharged batteries. The list goes on.

                • +1

Then unscrew it with your bare hands as the person in the Reddit post did.

If it's still under warranty, have it replaced under warranty of you're so obsessed with not "voiding the warranty "

@OZKap: Stop minimising vendor lock in behaviour.

    • +3

Negging an AAA powered torch because their other torches don't use standard batteries?

      • -2

The second torch mentioned is sealed from factory. The rep saying its replaceable because you can snap the glue this company put on the threads to deny the average user features and servicesbility, and void your warranty doing it.

You know. Something 95% of other manufacturers in the space dont do.

        • +8

RichardL is not a "rep", Ademos, he's the OP, a knowledgeable torch specialist, and an Ozb moderator. Anyone posting a deal who has links should (must) tick the "Associated" box and you'll see that word on bold type adjacent to the deal poster's name in the title.

I agree with your comments about glueing threads and proprietary batteries - the latter is one of the reasons I won't buy from Olight (price being the other). If you search you'll find plenty of similar sentiments, including on specialist torch websites. Gluing threads is simply bastardry, although they might say it was for "safety purposes" - obviously a throw away line, much like the torch if/when the battery fails.

          • -7

            @Igaf:

            a knowledgeable torch specialist

That is most certainly a matter of opinion.

            • +1

@Ademos: Amoing other things, it depends on the sample size the opinion is based on. Everything is relative.

            • @Ademos: Damn. Out of negs already today.

          • +5

            @Igaf:

            a knowledgeable torch specialist,

not a specialist, just a hobbyist.

            • @RichardL: At least it's better than arson, or trolling

    • I love the charging system personally, which also means using the proprietary batteries. The new Baton Turbo comes with an adapter so you can use non proprietary batteries. This may be an option they make available for other models.

    • I refuse to support a manufacturer that supports a proprietary battery system.

I was just looking at a review for the Olight warrior 3S model. it mentions the battery is a bit taller so the torch won't work with a shorter battery.
is this what you are talking about being "proprietary"?

because afaik the taller batteries just have a chip inside to protect it, while the shorter ones don't. they are both called the same battery model 18650 or 21700.

or is there something I am missing? I am reading similar comments about Olight elsewhere, does the torch only work with the battery it came with?

      • Olight have some models that use an odd battery with both terminals at one end, and aren't compatabile with any standard form of the 18650.

When they do feature "standard" batteries, they have been known to glue the light shut so you're voiding warranty by swapping it out yourself. Even if it's just because it went flat. You can see people trying to handwave this away by saying "but you can break into it", their argument seemingly being that it's "not heaps of glue". Insane.

Among the "standard" 18650's, 21700's, etc yes, there's some variance. The chip versions are aka "protected" cells, fyi. Then there's flat or button top styles.

        • I just read the 1lumen review for the Warrior 3S and they do mention the battery as proprietary (the video I watched just said “it’s longer”).
1lumen says the battery can be used in other torches if you are careful or cover the surrounding area at the top with a piece of plastic.

but they say nothing about a different battery working in the 3S. I’m guessing not because the Warrior 3S charges with a special magnetic cable, and normal batteries probably don’t charge with it. 🤔

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: My main gripe is that there is a galaxy of manufacturers out there that aren't trying to pull this lock in nonsense on any of their range, and let you mix/match/swap to your hearts content.

Yay, have enough i3Es and i1R2s. The Imini 2 looks good for $8 :)

    • Same here, stopped buying the i3E. Wouldn't mind more i1R 2 Pro/iTHX though.

    • +2

be aware you would need to remove an attached keyring from the Imini 2 to charge it :)

      • that’s kind of annoying…

  • Are these torches any good compared to torches from led lenser? Need a new torch for work.

    • Olight spend a lot on marketing, so take that for what it's worth. I'm not sure about Led Lenser but my favourite EDC light for work (electrician) is a Fenix LD30.

    • I bought a penlight from LED Lenser and was really disappointed with the evenness of the light it emitted - lots of bright spots/dark areas.

All of my olight torches give a nice and even light.

    • I have one of these attached to my life jacket. They are handy !

    • +1

To me olight seen to be better quality but I have only seen two from each brand

    • +1

      Look at Sofirn and Wurkkos.

  • Can you replace battery?

    • +4

i3E EOS - Standard AAA Battery
imini 2 - Standard 10180 Lithium Battery (won't be easy to source) - Disassemble

      • 10-15 bucks for the battery. Might as well wait for another Olight event to get another for free(ish)

        • -7

The rep is lying to you. The answer is no. If you break the glue on tbe threads they put there to deny the consumer choice, you void warranty.

      • -8

Just keep avoiding mentioning the answer is "no, not without breaking into it and voiding your warranty".

Just own it dude. You've bending over backwards to cater to people looking for a feature that olight literally glued shut.

        • +3

Richard isn't an olight rep. Reps are highlighted as such on Oz bargain.

          From the disassembly

What shall I say, opening the thing was easier than I thought. The threads were glued, but at last I was able to unscrew the tail cap with my bare hands.

The guy got into it without any tools, after which all the components were able to be taken apart and the battery is rxposed. I really don't see the issue.

Do you also freak out about manufacturers using thread locker to prevent fasteners rattling loose?

  • For the "purchase", could I possibly claim the i3E EOS then next time I get the "purchase" free torch?

    • +3

Yep. Last time I claimed the i3E and this time I have the imini 2 offer

      • me to

      • Thanks for the tip!

  • +2

Thanks OP @RichardL :) Love my Olight torches

  • +1

Anyone getting any nice freebies from the spin the wheel thing?

I got a dry bag or something but I'm holding out, hoping I get something better!

    • +6

I've spun almost every wheel daily from the past promotions and never won anything haha.

  • Received the imini2 and would have preferred the iR2 Pro. Can't see much use for the imini 2 where you have to pull it apart to turn on.
Bought a i5R and a little disappointed as the light has a greenish tint to it. I wouldnt consider is a "Cool White LED." They also put too much lube on the threads and the battery was all greasy when i took it out to charge so needed a clean up.

    • +1

The green tint seems to be a universal complaint of olight. I added a phoenix i3T because smooth brain was sold on the design was going to get a warrior nano or baton but the green made me question getting anything higher end.

Think some of their newer lights have moved away from green maybe next generation will be less green.

      • Should have read more reviews. Dont thunk 1lumen review mentioned anything about a green tint in i5 or i3 reviews.

  • +1

Just unpacked my imini 2 OD
Not very bright, not very practical, more of a fidget toy.

Bring back the i1R 2 but update it to usb-c

    • +1

      i1R 2 but update it to usb-c

That would be the 'i1R 2 Pro' or 'iTHX', which they did give out in the past

    • So far I've been loving my imini.
I've taken it on walks after sunset with me, clipped onto my belt. It also magnetizes to my sons bike so he can see where he's going.
It's not super bright but its bright enough, and the size is awesome.
