OzBargain Community - Are You Happy at Work?

Nearly half of Australians unhappy at work, new survey finds

So that prompts me to ask the OzB community, are you happy with your job?

Personally, yes, I am happy with my job. There are some long and annoying days, but overall, I do love my job. It offers lots of flexibility, is WFH, and always provides a sense of achievement when seeing good results.

My job is a mix of wonderful and dire.

    Wonderful flexibility and leave - 32 days leave a year + 12 RDOs, WFH 3 days/week.

Under resourced department, under resourced management who have minimal understanding of my area, greatly struggling to get people to even review my work/reports, basically working solo in my area and fear I could make mistakes - as no one checks my work.

Overall I don't like it, but I like the conditions/flexibility. I think I'm lucky on the whole. There's a million things I'd rather be doing, but even if I was rich I might still work - it's work that makes the world/society go round.

So you're respected and trusted to do your job? I envy you. My boss has no idea what I do, but also won't listen. He insists on telling me how to do my job based on what he thinks those in similar roles in his previous company did. (This is his 2nd position, so he doesn't have a lot to go by.)

I think a better negotiator could have really owned this position and changed the way the company operates, but my "negotiating" turned into heated discussions so I gave up and just wait it out until another opportunity comes.

So long as you're compensated adequately, I'd love to be in your role.

      • I wouldn't say I'm respected to do the job right, it's more because of under resourcing and the fact no-one else understands my area.

I've been in your position too. I think they key thing is, a career is such a long thing and now 15 years into it I see that things change - even if it never feels like they will.

Actual quote from someone at the same work "You're at work I don't expect you to be happy"

    • We were told "If you're not happy you should leave".
(We're in a remote community where there aren't many other opportunities. I took the job despite already trying to negotiate things in the interview… gave it about a year to try to make a difference, now several years trying to find a new job.)

I think I'd rather your company. I bet you don't have a department for planning what they want the culture to be, running workshops to tell us how we're expected to feel, and endless meetings showing changes in culture over time. (The key measure is how many people do the surveys. When they get few results, we know only the suckups did the survey. When they get leaders to bully subbordinates to do it, the ambiguous questions still suggest we're all happy and excited and diligent, so no one wants to contribute.)

moderately happy at work, plenty of other jobs I would enjoy more but none that would pay me as much. Having said that the moment I feel my retirement goals are met I will happily walk away never to return. Work is merely a means to an end.

  • Overall I love my job. Decent salary, work is not boring, flexible and lastly good manager. Unfortunately I am looking for another job overseas for family reason. The good thing is I can take my time looking for the next one.

  • Love me job!

  • For me ive come to terms with how life is. I think its extremely rare and lucky for someone to find a job that they absolutely love and that it pays them enough to live a comfortable life style. Bless the people who have managed that. As for myself though, I dont love my job, it definitely has more down moments than up moments, but it pays well, i live comfortably without many issues. I cant complain.

  • I liked my job - just hate specific people.
