  • Are these things any good? I've been thinking about an e-book reader but know nothing about them. I like that it is e-ink screen so good for reading.
    What is wifi used for?
    Is 6" a good size?
Do I have to buy books from Amazon or I can just load online books that I get from anywhere?

    • Kindle is one the best e-ink reader and e-link currently is the best because of no black light.

Kindle paperwhite is better with higher resolution and a small light for you to read in the dark but not available in here yet.

6" is the most common ebook reader size, if you not are sure go to DSE and try it out.

they are very good…use mine all the time.
wi-fi is used to connect to the amazon kindle store from the kindle….can download books straight to the device.
can also put books from elsewhere, they just need to be in the correct format…get free software from http://calibre-ebook.com/ to convert files to work with it.

      • great thanks. I just read about the paperwhite, bit skeptical on the backlight. Is it better than e-ink for reading?

    • Well, the closest the closest e device to a book you can get. One of the biggest difference for me is that it gets a lot more tiring than reading a normal book under low light(or I am getting old lol), therefore should consider getting a light for reading.

  • If you buy the dick smith gift card, do they email you the details so you can use it immediately, like JB HI-FI do? Dont really want to have to wait until post arrives tomorrow just to save $9.

    • they aren't electronic. delivery by post.

  • Just wondering, is this one ad-supported? Or ad-free? :)

    • ad-free, ad-supported only for US local.

  • I understand that these are are $69 standard on Amazon…add $20-$30 third party delivery fee will get you $89-$99 - similar price.

I got the paperwhite delivered recently ($119 on amazon) for $145 total using borderlinx, not a bad deal.

    • You cannot get the ad-supported version delivered directly to Australia, so you have to buy the $89 version plus delivery, people said total around $100-$110.

      • That's what he said - third party delivery - aka forwarder.

  • I want the paperweight..but I think I may get the kindle at dse instead, seeing as the paperweight is sold out in the only place that you can get it in australia http://www.readershop.com.au/collections/amazon-kindles/prod… (btw they were selling it for something like $200). And I wanted something to tide me over for those boring christmas holidays with family. The kobo glo looks ok but I don't think it is worth that extra $60 just for a back light.

Hopefully with the amount of people ordering overseas and using freight forwarding, retailers here will get the message that its not ok to mark up the price so high.

I normally use anything heavy within reach as my paperweight. No need for an expensive $100-200 device.

  • Bought 2 - Thanks! :)
