Looking for Affordable Vet in Sydney – No Insurance & Limited Budget

Hi OzBargainers, I’m looking for some advice.

We have a small dog that recently developed a large wart on one of her legs. Unfortunately, we don’t have pet insurance, and I’ve recently lost my job, so finances are tight.

The last time I visited a vet in Kingsford for a small issue, I was hit with a pretty big bill and a bunch of unnecessary tests. I’m hoping to avoid that this time.

Does anyone know of an affordable vet in Sydney who could help without charging a fortune?

Maybe there is an insurance service that I could use?

Any recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks!

    Affordable Vet

They don't exist. A vet practice is expensive to operate and the vet likely has a $220k hecs debt they are trying to pay off.

  • Greencross Vets have an annual plan that includes unlimited vet consultation.
edit to add if you want to get insurance I suggest do it now because anything before insurance will be considered as pre existing condition and won’t get covered by future policies

    • The wart will be 100% be noted on a medical history and will be scrutinised if the OP immediately tries to use the new policy to cover a surgery.

    • If you do go for insurance, they will look at previous records and generally have a 30 day waiting period as well.

    • And if you cancel after having an appointment or two they will try and charge the full year.

We had membership and rang when I dog hurt is back (for the second time)… it was about 6.15 pm and they said 'oh, we close at 7.00, you'll have to take him to X'. X was at least 45 minutes away with a small, excitable dog with a spinal issue.

Rang another vet, took him there. All sorted, $145.

      Never went back to Greencross.

They also didn't make it easy to cancel the membership.

Don't know where you are (assuming east, Kingsfordish) but the more out west (within Sydney) you go the cheaper it seems.

Funny how when it's something that Medicare pays for, it's 'test me for everything!' But when it's a pet that we pay out of pocket for, the same tests are suddenly 'unnecessary.'

    • OP could have said no, why would they offer something unnecessary?
I like that my vet gives me all options available to me and my pets. I don't have to choose the most expensive.

      • I did not have that option. I was presented with the bill after they've done all the tests.

        • i would of disputed that as they need to ask your permission before doing anything…a vet charged me for something i didn’t agree too so she couldn’t charge me

I can’t speak for their services (or prices), but perhaps you could try reaching out to the University of Sydney Vet Teaching Clinic? They may be able to advise you or refer you to a reputable practitioner.

    • Or do they do surgery?

  • Not a vet - and I'll probably be down voted - try using dental floss and a constructor knot around the base of the tag/wart (tights as possible), and give it a few days to a week to see if it falls off. It will likely bleed slightly and then dry up. Keep the area sterile/clean as clean as possible with rubbing alcohol.

    • Good suggestion and I don't know why you'd be negged for that. At least you're trying to help.

The op has diagnosed his dog. It may not be a wart, could be a malignant growth

        Or a toe

  • Penshurst Vet, south side of the railway. Paul has been there for decades and I have used his services for both dogs and cats. Always reasonable with prices he is old now and only there in mornings mostly. Cash only no eftpos. Give him a call.

  • Here's the link to Greencross Healthy Pets Plus: https://www.greencrossvets.com.au/healthy-pets-plus/
For $600/year you get unlimited vet consultation.

I rate Benny and the Pets at Kogarah. They were always pretty good and reasonably priced. No vet is cheap but they’re not Kingsford pricing.

We did have a family with 4 dogs going, I don’t know if that played into the pricing they gave us though.
