Electric Shaver/Razor

Looking for a xmas present for my nephew, looking for a close shave electric razor not just a trimmer. Preferably i'm looking to spend about $70 and would welcome any suggestions or products to avoid.

why not try a double edge razor? they are a much nicer gift, and give a far better shave than an electric razor. something like this from mensbiz includes everything you need to get started http://www.mensbiz.com.au/mens-biz-budget-wetshaving-kit.htm…

    • Thanks for the reply mattlol, do you shave with a de razor yourself? Interesting reading the testimonials but on a product site you would expect them all to be favourable.

Personally, I maintain a stubble goatee with a 3mm trimmer and use a gillette fusion for the rest of my face as ive also never found electric razors (rotary or otherwise) gave me a close enough shave and am now considering trying a de for myself, that being said given he specifically asked for an electric I feel inclined to still get him one and let him find out for himself, some people don't seem to have the same issue (they wouldnt keep making and selling so many of them if they didnt work?), my father swears by his phillips rotary but the more expensive in the range are a little out of my budget.

      • Sure do! I use different products to what's in that kit and I don't think I could ever go back to shaving with disposable razors. Electric shavers never really worked well for me as I have to shave every day.
My first DE was actually a ~$20 one from the shaver shop and it was an excellent 'beginners' razor. Not too harsh, quite forgiving, although of course with this comes the cost of not getting quite as close a shave as some of the more expensive handles. Excellent for beginners though, and it does take a bit of practice/patience to get the angle and technique right. Plus there are countless options when it comes to blades, shaving brushes, creams, soaps etc. It really can become quite a hobby!

There is an ongoing thread for DE shaving on Whirlpool, check out some of the links in the first post. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1779215. There are also countless youtube instructional videos.

That said though, if he's specifically asked for an electric that might be the best way to go. Perhaps mention DE razors to him though as he may not be aware of them. DE and Straight Razors definitely have a 'cool' factor that electric and disposable razors don't, simply because they are such classic shaving instruments.

Perhaps try one out for yourself first? Keep in mind that a shaving brush and soap/cream is just as important a part of the equation as the handle/blade itself. Using a warm shaving brush to apply cream to your face just feels so nice, is far better for your skin, and contributes to the closer shave you get with DE.
