ING Bank Has Digital Card with New Dynamic CVV

Recently I got an email from ING bank that they have digital card details from ING app. The digital card details are the digital version of physical card details with dynamic CVV. CVV is the unique 3 digits on the back of your physical card that are used to authorise payments online or over the phone.

The email says "dynamic CVV changes every 6 hours, so it can't be used to process transactions in conjunction with your other card details once it's expired. Don't worry, any ongoing payments set up will still be processed as your CVV is only used for setup of payments."

So, the digital card numbers is still the same with physical card numbers, only the CVV is different. I think it's a useful feature for online shopping.

I have another account with Wise that also have max 3 digital/virtual card numbers, but the numbers are entirely different. I can delete the virtual card numbers and get new virtual card numbers with entirely different numbers than previous virtual card numbers.

What do you think? Do you have other bank cards with similar features like virtual card numbers and dynamic CVV?

I don't have Revolut yet, as last time I know that there is a fee for disposable virtual card.

    might not work on amazon?

    • For Amazon subscription, I think the payment will still keep going until you cancel. Better use Wise virtual card that can be deleted and get a new virtual card with different numbers. Or Revolut single use virtual card.

For me, I only put a Wise virtual card in PayPal. I disable the virtual cards until I want to use them for certain payments. Amazon subscription will fail after removing automatic payment in PayPal and disable Wise virtual card. Do not put other bank cards or money in PayPal in my opinion. Paypal will use the other card for Amazon subscription if the associated card with Amazon fail to proceed.

You know you can just delete the Paypal authority?

        • You mean automatic payment in Paypal.

    • I do not see a problem with using a dynamic CVV on Amazon.

When you attempt to link a payment card to an Amazon account, Amazon does a $0.00 charge to your payment card to validate its details. If the payment card details are correct and the card issuer allows this transaction, your payment card will be linked for future Amazon purchases (whether within the next six hours or well after that). ING says that the CVV is not needed again after you link the payment card, which means future transactions should be fine, even if the dynamic CVV has changed to a new value.

Westpac first implemented a dynamic CVC a few years ago, and I have used this when setting up my payment method on Cashrewards' gift card portal. I am able to place orders for gift card orders using the linked Westpac card (even though the dynamic CVC at the time of placing the gift card order is different to the dynamic CVC used to set up my payment order), which validates ING's point about the CVV not being needed again after linking a payment card.

I foresee a problem where you provide your payment details to a merchant, but the merchant does not actually charge your card until it is ready to be shipped. For example, if you pre-order an iPhone 16 Pro on the Apple website right now, Apple will not charge your payment card (and not even a $0.00 charge to validate the payment method) until the iPhone is ready to be shipped (which would from 20 Sep onwards), so using a dynamic CVV in this case is a bad idea.

  • so you can't use this for a one off door dash order to stop them charging you again

Not good for subscription (Dashpass). Only good for non subscription payments, I think. Use Wise virtual card (disable or get new virtual card) or Revolut disposable virtual card instead.

      • Why would it not be good for a subscription?

One of my monthly subscriptions uses my Westpac card as the payment method, and when I set this up many months ago, I used the dynamic CVC. I've had subscription payments taken out every month from my Westpac card without fail.

        • Hvrd wants a one off Dashpass free trial, I think. That's why this ING digital card is not good for this purpose.

  • Dynamic CVV good when you process payments over the phone.

  • Hmmm, I've not received that email…

    • Email from 2 days ago. Subject: your card details when and where you need them

Check ING app for this feature.

      • Maybe it's targeted?

Didn't get any email either … And nothing in app (went right through every part of app - but no such offer / suggestion).

I got the email and it includes a link to this webpage on the ING website. There is nothing in either the email or the webpage to suggest it is targeted to specific customers (other than the fact that it mentions you can see the card details for an Orange Everyday card or Orange One card).

Have you followed the instructions on this webpage and have confirmed you cannot see any digital card details through the app? I am running the most recent version of the app and can see it.

            @WookieMonster: Yes, that worked.

Weird that I didn't get any email … Nor "new features" when login VIA app … Which has happened in past when they roll-out new things.
