Cancelling Booking Made Using Platinum Edge Travel Credits on AmEx

Hi all, I made a booking of $300 hotel which is 100% refundable. I applied the travel credit at the time of booking. The full $300 was charged, and later got a $200 credit in my Amex statement. It used to work differently before, they would have applied $200 travel credit at the time of booking and charged $100 for the booking. In that instance, cancellation meant $200 credits were lost.

I need to cancel this booking now due to change in travel plans, my question is whether I would get the full $300 refund or just the $100 with travel credits gone?

I have already contacted Amex about it and they are ambiguous about this. Their T&Cs don't tell exactly say "may revers statement credits issued"

Anyone else had a recent similar situation?

What happens if I cancel my booking or Card?
If your booking is cancelled, and your Travel Credit has already been used and associated statement credit applied to your account, you will forfeit your annual Travel Credit benefit and American Express may reverse the statement credits issued. If you cancel your Card, change your rewards program or Card type you will no longer be eligible for the Travel Credit.

    You'd lose the travel credit

    • Thanks for quick reply. Are you saying that from a similar experience before or your interpretation of T&C?

      Once bitten, twice shy.
Travel credits are not usually refundable given you were given a travel credit already

  • Maybe change the Hotel date booking and use it?

    • It's the change in city, so date change is not a possibility.

  • In the past I've had full refund on cancellations (including reinstatement of travel credit).

      Times change.

      In the (PointHacks link) above:

Only use for highly certain bookings
      Use on last-minute hotel bookings
By using on last-minute bookings, you minimise the risk of losing the Travel Credit as there is less time for your plans to face any unforeseen circumstances that requires cancelling the booking.

I used the AMEX online chat and they said, I will get the full amount back to my card PLUS the credit stay as statement credit.

    • When was this?

      • Last week

        • Keep us updated.

I want to know if they’ll rescind the statement credit or not.

          • @HardQuiz: Just want to paste the chat here "Upon checking, your booking is still within the free cancellation period before 06 October 2024. If ever you want to cancel you will receive a full refund and the A$450 travel credit used on this booking will remain as statement credit on your account."

From my understanding, it means I will keep the credit and they won't take back.

            • @bobokingdom: OP is referring to the $200 Platinum Edge credit. You're referrring to a $450 credit; to which card is this linked? Perhaps you've purchased a fully refundable QF ticket?

              • @sumyungguy: $450 is for a Hotel Booking using Platinum Card. But the same system for all travel credits afaik.

                • @bobokingdom: Platinum Travel Credit T&C says no refunds so appears you're worthy of an exemption

                  • @sumyungguy: I suggested EVERYONE who will cancelled a refundable booking to contact AE online chat so you will get a B/W confirmation. You can asked them to email you a copy of the chat so you have a record.

Question for anyone in the group, ANYONE got their Credit crawled back in the past year for their NON Qantas AE cards?

Who knows, give it a go and find out!

Maybe you found a money glitch, and can get free money!

    • No Free money, just whether he can convert his Travel Credit into Cash :)

I lost the travel credit a few years ago when I needed to cancel.

    • Yea the way they redeemed few years earlier to a booking was different to this. I will cancel and share how I went.

  • Amex's site literally says travel credit bonuses as part of CC sign ups are "one time use" and "do not get refunded".

    Tough luck.

  • Do you mean for all these years I should have just cancelled my bookings thru Amex, got the cash back, and then booked thru the much cheaper options. Damn, that’s a loophole and a half.

    • No, apparently it only started when they changed to the REBATE system last year.

  • Update for anyone following: Confirmed with a knowledgeable Amex agent who has given to me in writing. As long as the booking itself is refundable, I will be getting a full refund. The statement credit once applied is “permanent”. I’ve cancelled my booking now.

    • So you've been advised these terms may not apply?
If your booking is cancelled, and your Travel Credit has already been used and associated statement credit applied to your account, you will forfeit your annual Travel Credit benefit and Amex may reverse the statement credits issued in the relevant anniversary.

      • I think they put that in there to avoid giving people carte blanche abusing this to get travel credits back as statement credits.

I think they are there for the non refundable bookings

        • That means you can make a refundable booking, cancel and convert the travel credit to cash. Surely that's not what they intend or do you think they just don't care?

          • @sumyungguy: I have no idea on that mate. I had a genuine case of booking and cancellation experience. Sure sounds like its open to be exploited.
