Build Your Own PC

Hi all, I built my own PC about 10 years ago and had a blast doing it. Obviously, prices have changed but I’m surprised how much cheaper a pre-built package is these days.

There are some great deals posted recently for gaming PC’s and an exact comparison on part picker doesn’t even come close. Am I missing something or is prebuilt the way if one wants to save a few hundred?

Thanks for any insights.

    • Yes, that’s what I was using to compare. Just surprised by the price gap.

Prebuilt is just easier and cheaper these days…

buying 1 item costs you lots… them buying 100 saves them money

Still more options when you opt out to build your own PC - would it be a fully white build, or say 100% Corsair branded one or specific form-factor you would prefer.

This, a prebuilt PC is fine if you don't care what you get but once you start getting specific the price goes up quickly

For example the latest techfast build, save $200+ on the best prices on pcpartpicker. However once you start to get into upgrades, it becomes less clear.

RAM, comes with 16GB DDR5-5200 which they price at $109. Upgrading to 32GB DDR5-6000 costs another $89. Yet a new set of DDR5-6000 32GB is $149. Keeps going like that, $130 to upgrade from 1TB to 2TB nvme drive, on top of the $84 existing, yet a decent 2TB nvme drive can be had for $160. $65 extra for a 850W PSU when it's $9 more elsewhere. I will say their case prices are pretty sharp though.

That said, I do love these deals compared to the old days, where it used to be pick the parts and pay them $50 to slap it together. At a very minimum it's a free build, which can save a few hours of your life, or a very cheap PC if you don't need to be choosy. I just wish they defaulted to 32GB RAM.

      • This one seems a little more bang for buck, no? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866136

Better GPU and PSU in the fast tech. What do you think? 🤔

Comes down to what you need. 4070 ti super will be worth it at 4K and more future proofed, and you either never notice your PSU or really notice it when it causes instability or blows up.

  • I would assume pre-built comes with a single warranty

    BYO is individual warranties

Prebuilts are great for a powerful rig on a budget but they generally cheap out on at least 2 or 3 of the components. Usually motherboard, PSU or case, occasionally RAM. It’s worth looking into all of the components if you’re going that way and making a decision for yourself. I still prefer building myself and knowing that each individual component is of a high quality, but that’s just me.

    • Agree 100%.
Those discount prebuilts cut corners everywhere possible. People that buy them tend to only look at the CPU and GPU. And even then, they are usually bottom binned GPUs.

  • If you really wanna save, then prebuilt is the way to go since the deals are much better these days. Building your own is still pretty fun, as I'll always go for that option.
