  • Does this also apply to bookings where you pay in person once you arrive? How does cashback get paid out?

once you booked any accommodation, regardless of your payment method. your booking will be tracked, and cashback will be added to your shop back account few months after you check out.

  • Place 2 separate booking for hotel accommodation in Malaysia and got emails from Bookings that my purchases have been tracked

    • In the past right? Not just now?

  • Booking.com literally adds the cash back value to the cost of the hotel. You aren't saving any money, you're paying more then getting some back months later.

    • I agree they do it for many hotels. Earlier this year I managed to get the hotel I wanted in Cambodia for same price after checking with and without cashback. It was still about 7% more expensive than direct with hotel so I saved about 8% after 15% cashback …

I've never found this to be the case.

I've literally checked on a new browser, desktop Pc with VPN and the prices are the same or in some cases, I was offered a significant discount on top of the desktop price by using Shopback on mobile. Like $3500 direct, $2800 via Booking.com on PC, and $2300 if I did Booking.com on mobile + shopback.

I've booked in at least $10000 worth of accommodation in Aus and Japan and never find it cheaper to go to the hotel direct or that the price is worse if I go via Shopback/Booking.com

There are people who seem to find it does occur so not sure how/why that is, and whether it's specific hotels or countries, but definitely not my experience at least.

      • I've seen it. Definitely happens over time. Its not that black and white though within a day or so, a lot of black magic going on with cookies, analytics tracking, price cycles etc. Does my head in every time i have to arrange a holiday which is now again. Usually i land on booking.com or Agoda as being the cheapest, sometimes expedia, i log the prices over a week or so to create a baseline then assess closer when cashbacks pop up before make a decision.

Over the last year I've booked around 200 nights. I often check multiple platforms and try with and without cashback.

Booking.com with 10-12% cashback from shopback or cashrewards is consistently the cheapest, and I've never found the prices get increased.

      • 200 nights in a year is 1 FTE holidaymaker.

    • I find that it might be hotel specific. I've compared booking.com's prices with and without cashrewards, and on other platforms. I did notice price jack in some occasions but not always. What I do now is find the hotel that I want on booking.com, then google the hotel and see what prices other platforms are offering.

I recommend having two browsers going when booking with booking.com during one of these increased cashback events.

One with you clicked through the cashback company and one without.

I'm not sure the reason for it only happening to some hotels, but booking.com definitely does jack up the price when using cashback sometimes. So always have a look at the cost with and without cashback to make sure it's actually a better deal.

Best to look directly on google to compare all the other providers too, usually its Agoda or Expedia that has the lowest price in my experience

      • Agreed I also noticed Agoda desktop version , some are cheaper then the app ver.

  • Shopback only says 5.5% cashback for me, anybody else got this problem?

      Starts at 10am.

      • Ah gotcha, thanks!

Always do a search for the same hotel in Incognito and without the cash rewards link And you will sometimes find that to be cheaper upfront, rather than going through any of the cash rewards type sites.

My past couple of experience have been like that, and hence I've stopped using cash back for booking .com.

    • I have that experience with cashrewards, less so with shopback. 12% is usually more than any price jacks

    • Via ShopBack booking.com 50$ more expensive than booking.com via google maps

Just checked a room via private browser on a mac:
    -Booking.com $275
    -Qantas Hotels $225
    -Hotel website $269

    • Checked another hotel, this time all three came back with $169.

  • I find that searching through Tripadvisor for a hotel usually yields the best deals. Not only can you see a variety of prices from different platforms, but they are sometimes cheaper than going direct to the booking site….e.g. I have found Agoda can be sometimes cheaper clicked through from Tripadvisor than just going direct to the Agoda website or app. Don't log into your Agoda account until you get the price you want. If you do the price can suddenly jump up. Most of the time Agoda is the cheapest option for me. Unless I know definitely my plans won't change, I use the free cancellation and pay later option, esp when booking well in advance, just in case I find it cheaper, or find a better hotel for a better price. Going through Shopback for this deal for my hotel with Booking.com….the price with them is way more expensive, even with the 12% cashback (and I think that is sans GST)…e.g. $2335 Booking.com and $1790 Agoda…same booking conditions, room type and inclusions.
