  • Great price for a good set of open-back cans. Got mine delivered for A$327 just over a year ago.

  • Have these and love them. Still going strong after a year

  • Are these good for gaming? Paired with seperate mic?

      PC? Sure, dac/amp worth considering.

Simple breakdown for a non-audiophile "gaming" focused buyer:
      - Open-Back Headphone design - Wider soundstage, makes the "room" seem larger, i.e. for determining positioning of footsteps/gunfire in competitive shooters
      - Tuned to be warmer and bassier than would normally be, meaning you get a heavier hitting more traditional sounding headphone experience rather than what would otherwise be flat or too bright for the casual listener
      - Responds well to being plugged into a phone jack rather than requiring another costly amplifier purchase, but a DAC should be considered if you want the most out of them, depends how loud you listen though as well, sound is subjective
      - Quality product made from quality parts from a well known company and reliable source
      - Will make you realise why everyone says "gamer headphones" suck

Thank you guys for taking time to answer.

        That helps a lot.

I'll just add that they're "Open Back" - meaning that they're open to the air around you.

That's good for ventilation, probably better for sound quality; but if you're in a noisy environment you'll hear more of that noise than closed-back headphones.

        • Open back is way more comfy than closed. Would recommend for sure. Also I have these headphones through an audient evo 4 which works very well but I needed to pair my xlr mic which this unit specifically does.

      • +1

I wouldn't call the HD6xxs bassy - they're actually quite anemic in the bass department.

      • +3

Okay, this is a well-meaning but misinformed post:

        • Open-backed headphones also tend to deliver greater resolution through lower distortion and the typically diminished bass is due to a lack of bass reflections from the the back of the headphone closure not being closed off, and the designers choosing not to reintroduce heavily distorted bass to reintroduce it

        • Warmer and bassier are the same thing, but in this case we're talking about 1-2 dB in the high and mid-bass. The design intent was to improve vocal timbre, bass extension, and synergise better with tube amps vs the HD600.

        • It absolutely is not suited to a phone jack, but most of the frequency response (250Hz - 15kHz) will sound capable and controlled with most modern basic amplification, however outside those ranges it will sound less controlled and increasingly quiet as you drift further out, hence why some may call it 'dark', 'veiled', or 'smeared' (though pad wear over time will also contribute)

        • a DAC converts a digital signal into an analogue one, and while they do possess an amp, this is simply to kickstart the signal for a much more powerful amplifier to make it audible, your comment is referring to an integrated DAC/Amp, which is the most common - and typically least resolving and powerful - configuration. The 600/650/6XX all benefit from well-controlled amplification due to an fairly nimble driver and a varied impedance curve (the reason why it can sound uncontrolled and weak outside of 250Hz - 15kHz)

        • Part of what makes the 6XX cheap is a resin enclosure and headband of lower quality than typical Sennheiser design, but it doesn't impact engineering tolerances for the audio too much

        • Gamers with poor amplification and low resolution DACs may wind up preferring higher sensitivity and lower& flatter impedance options, but I hope otherwise

Have these - didnt need an amp to run from PC for those wondering!

    Cheers

    • +2

Depends on the PC, but most modern motherboards have fairly decent inbuilt sound cards these days but if you want to push these to their limit without distortion, a cheap dac would probably make a big difference for very little money

    • Don't kid yourself. The difference with a DAC/AMP is astonishing. I guess if you don't know how good these sound with a Dac/Amp, you will be ok without one. Also don't need an exxy Dac/Amp combo unit, something around $300 will do the trick.

      • +2

I have a $300 amp, and yeah they are better overall, but they still perfectly good without it imo

      • These continue to scale with good amplification and resolution, probably comparably to headphones to up to the $2500 range.

So it makes for a great headphone to have in a collection if that's how you generally want to experience your audio.

    • Admittedly, my Motherboard is quite a few years old, however it does not have enough power to drive this headphone to get the best out of it. This is an excellent headphone for easy listening, movies and music, however, in my experience it requires an Amp.

Had mine for a few years and really good. Got the lamb skin ear pads and balanced cable, run them through my Schiit stack and they are excellent.

  • Curious if these would be a worthwhile upgrade from the ATH-AD500X. Usually im listening to music or watching movies just for reference

  • Does anyone know if these pair "need" the double cables that connect to each left/right ear piece, or can I use my 3.5mm audio jack/mic combo on these? (for gaming convenience)

    • +1

They use a Sennheiser specific connector on both sides

  • Drop also has Qudelix-5k on special, good if you want to turn this fantastic cans into a decent wireless one. If you’re looking to do so, getting them both in one go now saves you on postage cost (although admittedly the Q5k is not as cheap as it has been before).

  • Drop had a code for $20 off orders over $100, DROPSEP20 I think, but apparently that doesn't work anymore.

How does it compare to these?
Asides from the fact these are closed vs hd6xx open.
And also notwithstanding the need for a DAC/amp to maximise these.
It's mainly for using in movies/anime and music will be a lot more vocal rather than instrumental.

  • Deal has expired. It's $199 US now plus postage.
