How Can a Solar Panel Advertised on TV Be So Cheap

Hi all, just saw a TV Ad about solar panels, company was 3P solar

They said some deal with out of pocket costs only $1200 in Victoria. I asked few companies a month ago and they were saying it'll cost me $5-$7k.

So I'm curious how can they off $1200…are they using a cheap brand of solar panels etc or are there hidden costs ..hmm. I mean for $1.2k I wouldn't mind installing half decent panels that say would last 5-10 years.

Thanks!

  • Just do your research and compare

They'll likely be using the cheapest products, installed by the lowest bidder. The out of pocket amount is just the deposit. The balance will be some sort of loan.

Also remember that tv ads aren't cheap and the money ultimately comes from the customer.

$1200 if you include the interest free loan which means it is $2600. Then plus the grant is $4000.

I got an itemised bill when I installed mine 2 years ago.

Panels are basically free due to STCs ($30 per STC)
    Inverter (Growatt) $1k
    Labour $2.5k
Extra for demounting old 1.5kw ($500)

Basically $4k. Then take off the grant and the loan ($2800)

  • OP, explanation of how their "price" is $1200 is here.
    https://www.3psolar.com.au/6-6kw-solar-system/

    $3991 price
    - $1400 Vic govt rebate
    - $1400 loan you pay back later from your power bill savings also provided interest free by Vic govt
    = $1191 up-front out-of-pocket payment required

Right, you've got your answer, you can close the thread now.

  • We went for a cheap one as my friend did and was having good results. We paid $2600 over 3 year ago in WA, Cheap 5kW inverter (Growatt) and cheap 6.6kW panels but 10 year inverter and 20 year panels warranty (not sure how good the warranty would be in time). We run a pool pump and dish washer/washing machine during the day,

This was the best financial decision as saved $100 to $150 dollars every bill so $600 to $900 per year so it has just paid for itself in just over 3 years.

Over a year ago we got an EV and have always charged it on solar excess (the wife works from home and I take the train to the city). Over 15,000km without paying for fuel that has made the solar extremely beneficial.

If you are going to be living at the same property for at least 5 years, I would highly recommend a cheap solar system. The Chinese quality is improving all the time with warranties to match. We could not justify paying twice the price for a German system that would probably not last twice as long.

    • Hi, thanks for sharing this info! I’m considering something like this as I’m getting an EV soon - would you mind sharing the name of the company and any details on the panels? No worries if you’d rather not share on a forum!
