Hey OzBargain Family,

I just went outside and Oh boy was it hot!!! Flying ants zooming around, mosquitos, butterflies I am truly afraid of what is about to happen!!!

With the scorching Aussie summer just around the corner, I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread where we can all share our best finds for hats, fly protection, and sunscreen. Let's make this the go-to forum for all things summer prep!

The Heat is On

As we all know, the Australian summer can be brutally hot. With temperatures soaring, it's crucial to stay protected from the sun's harsh rays. Not to mention, the flies can be relentless! So, let's gear up and make sure we're all set to enjoy the summer without any hassles.

Bargain Hunting for Hats

I've been eyeing the classic Bunnings straw hat for just $7. It's a staple for many and does a great job of keeping the sun off your face. Plus, it's super affordable! Along with that, Bunnings also offers a fly net for $6, which is perfect for keeping those pesky flies at bay.

But I'm curious, does anyone have other recommendations for hats?

Fly Protection

Apart from the Bunnings fly net, are there any other effective fly protection options out there? I've seen some people use those head nets that cover the entire face and neck. Are they comfortable to wear for long periods? Or is the cork hat an ideal option!! Any specific brands or stores where you've found good deals?

Sunscreen Essentials

Sunscreen is an absolute must during the summer. I've always gone for the Cancer Council's sunscreen as it offers great protection and is often on sale. But I'm open to suggestions! Are there any other brands that you swear by? Maybe something that's gentle on the skin but still offers high SPF?

    Sunscreen Essentials

    Supermarket home brands just as good and much cheaper

    Also, were long sleeves (and roll up collar) and pants. At the beach I wear a rashie before I jump into and every time I get out of the rock pool. Something like this fits well and was very cheap (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/847608)

    Saw a mostly unbiased YouTuber demonstrate this thing that he saw people using at the Paris Olympics https://www.amazon.com.au/RANVOO-AICE-LITE-Conditioner-Recha…
    And it really works. It will blow onto your head cool air, and exhaust warmer air away from you (has to dump it somewhere). Having cooler air blasted at your head is apparently enough to really take the edge off in the heat, even when outdoors he said he immediately noticed how much hotter it felt without it when taking it off.

    Sunsmart have an excellent resource that sums up the effectiveness of different types of hats. Baseball caps offer very little protection.

    Okay I have not seen it done yet but is it socially acceptable to wear the mosquito net just to normal places or at the beach?
