Solar Panel Installation Recommendations in Sydney

Hey OzBargainers, I’m considering installing solar panels at my place in Sydney and was wondering if you could recommend any good companies or installers.

I’m looking for reliable and reasonably priced options, and any insights you have on this would be really helpful.

If you’ve had a positive experience or know of a reputable company, please let me know. I’d also appreciate any tips on what to look for or what questions to ask.

Finding a good solar installer is like finding a concreter who doesn't have anger and financial issues.

    • Ignoring that my installers recorded a tiktok video while on my roof, they were awesome.

I can't tell you who is good, but if any knock on your door "while they're in the area" or "installing a system for the neighbour", you're going to get ripped off.

Happy to give you the details of the guys that did ours last year in Sydney if you dm me.

However, you could also look at this well-respected comparison site:

    https://www.solarquotes.com.au/

    • This, solarquotes is the way to go. I also asked a few neighbors who had systems and were happy with their performances (smart home metering, app etc).

Worth noting, I took a bit of a risk and went with a company that was on the cheaper end, and wasn't at the top of the reviews charts. 1 year later, I'm very happy with it's performance and have been on the roof and looks like it was installed clean.

  • I went with Beyond Solar about 5 years ago for my 6.6KW system for $5000. Trina 315W panels, tilt panels, and 5KW SMA inverter.

Very happy with them… but I think they would be considered more on the middle to high side of prices rather than those ads on FB stating $3200 for a 10KW system.

And then my wife's family went with them about a 1.5 years after for their 10KW system and they're also happy with it.

those mass market TV solar installers with washed up cricketers advertising "tier 1" are junk tier, its the equivalent quality to TV shopping products

      steer clear

  • Origin does solar packages with a 2 or 4 year payment plan depending on what size system. The downside is that you will get locked into their electricity plan for the life of the payment plan but they do give you a high FIT for 2 years. Origin is unlikely to go under in the near future if that is also one of your concerns.

    • Did you go through origin? I'm with origin so don't mind locking in with them for 2 or 4 years

      • I got my system through Origin. Overall was a very easy process. Not many companies offer a payment plan so Origin's offer was good.

  • Depending on where you are located in Sydney, I had mine done via a company called Solar Run located in Hoxton Park (there are multiple franchise locations around Sydney but I had great success with this one). If you would like, I could DM you the details of the guy I dealt with and you can link up with him?

For more information, I had a 10kw system installed in 2021 for a total cost of $7300. Everything was handled very professionally and cleanly and the experience with them was completely painless.

    • Awesome, Thabks for the recommendation, was there any rebates that was given by the government?

      • Yeah, there were but they were already factored into the price I paid. I think the rebates brought the cost down from like $9K or thereabouts.

  • My partner did a 6.6kW system with Captain Green in 2018 and it's never had a problem. Install quality slightly sub-par but not terrible (4.5/5). A mate used the same company and seems happy enough.

I used My Energy Group for 5.4kW and it was 5 months from deposit to install. The installer was very disorganised, didn't have materials, took 4 days to do a 2 day job (so I had to keep rearranging my schedule, didn't turn up until 10.00am despite promising to be onsite at 8.00am.
I wouldn't use them again. Got the recommendation from Solar Quotes.

Put a deposit down last week for 2x Powerwall2 with Natural Solar. Hopefully they will do a good job.

    • Let me know how it goes wit Natural Solar. It sounds like there a lot of solar companies that everyone used so will try to narrow down which one is reliable

      • Won't be untill Nov or Dec when they install.

I spoke with many installers and I can recommend you ask 3-4 to come around and do an quote. Ask questions, get comfortable with what they are suggesting and really do it at your pace, not theirs.

Assume average quality install will be around $800- $1000 per kW. When you go cheap you get bad installs, no post sales support or cheap equipment. So up to you if you want to skimp up front vs pay for something that will last.

I landed on Soltek energy and Damien was great. Including pre and post sales support. Not pushy and easy to deal with.

    Good luck
