Just thought I'd post in case someone wanted one, JB HI-FI went out of stock right after I bought mine but Harvey Norman and Big W still has them in stock for delivery

Cant wait for all of these showing up to be sold on Scumtree and Fartbook for 10x their value.

    • +4

I can't wait for them to be stuck with them, as no one will buy that ridiculously overpriced pro.

      • Exactly this lol. just wait for the ps6.

  • Can these disk drives be added to an OG PS5 digital? I read the slim can have added the disk drive, but not sure on the OG digital.

FOMO, gotta love it. Do people think that Sony won't just make more of these sometime between now and November?

Plus when the PS5 Pro releases there will be a handful of stock that will sell out immediately, while there will be piles of these drives sitting around collecting dust.

    • Yes it is FOMO, but based on the previous PS5 release it could be warranted… last thing you want is to manage to score a PS5Pro at launch only to have to wait for stock on the drive just to be able to load your games.

      • Unless the hoarders double down and just keep buying all the drives, I imagine Sony can produce those a lot quicker than they can produce PS5 Pros. It's an obvious thing to have available at launch of the new consoles too, I imagine the margins are awesome on those drives (like most accessories).

The original rumour was a disc version of the Pro delayed to December due to a parts shortage on blu-ray drives. Which could make sense since slot loaded drives are made by a single contractor.

The same guy that gave the rumour was right about 99% of the Pro announcement weeks in advance. And he is technically not wrong still as the timeline hasn't played out yet.

Just some context, if you plan to buy the console there is no harm buying it now.

    • If you’re committed to buying a PS5 Pro anyway, I think buying the drive now makes perfect sense as those drives likely aren’t going to see any real reduction between now and then.

Buying multiple and hoarding them in the hope Sony can’t meet demand and prices spike seems a bit more of a gamble but, and also dependant on PS5 Pro units also being in high demand.

  • So what you are saying is these PS5 Disc Drive will fit into the Pro version?

    • Yes they do.

      • Gotta wait for my next month Woolworth Extra 10% code I suppose.

        • 10% extra code doesn't work for PlayStation hardware.

I don't think a blu-ray drive would have the component shortage similar to high end chip at times when everyone had to stay home. Budget is also tighter compared to back then too. It would be fine.

I bet Sony just didn't factor in the demand for it. Or in Japanese style, their Blu Ray drive department isn't on friendliest terms with the playstation console department, so no one saw it coming.

      • PlayStation (SIE) is now American, so definitely some culture or language gap between both executives.

  • I ordered one yesterday from Big W. The 10% everyday extra code doesn't work - I think it stopped working on gaming a while back. I hope they do have stock and it gets sent, since now sold out at Big W.

I was annoyed that I could have used the $30 off $300 with JB if I hadn't already ordered. Last night there was only regional stock in VIC online, but lots of NSW stores with stock (although I guess now sold out there).

If there really is a disc drive shortage I assume there is a workaround to avoid scalpers (if works out cheaper) - wait for the PS5 Slim with Disc Drive to go on sale, then take Disc Drive off the Slim and put the Disc Drive on the PS5 Pro and then put the removed cover from the PS5 Pro onto the PS5 Slim. Then sell the PS5 Slim as digital only.

Last week the 10% worked on my NB2K25 game. I guess it doesn't include hardware. Best hope to get 10% off from Aldi and spend it on EbGames

    • You can use the extra code for software but not hardware.
I ordered a drive from BigW on Wednesday night thinking they may sell out. Get home from work yesterday & it still hasn't shipped. Thought I'd missed out & was half expecting a cancellation but it shipped this morning. Crisis averted.

  • Fark, sold out everywhere. Idiots for not putting a drive in the box, how are enthusiasts, the ones with a day 1 ps5 that has a drive currently, supposed to smoothly move over. Crazy.

  • Man this is getting crazy

lol glad i got a second hand one still unused last week for cheap. i dont even think ill get a pro til the price comes down, but dont see these drives coming down either. RRP is a rip.

  • Disc drive must me made out of brick cocaine, I can't see how else they're justifying that price

  • ps5 pro or rtx 4070 ti?

  • +1

The Good Guys are selling it now delivered only.

    • Got it. 3 October delivery date. Extra $8 though. Delivered only.

      • Eh. I'd rather $8 than double/triple the price or nothing. Not taking chances.

The Good Guys just cancelled my order

    • +1

Same, need an alternative now :(

  • Order cancelled with $20 thanks.

    • Oh boy. Hope Sony will release a bunch come release day.

  • I just pre-ordered the PS5 Pro, the level 4 EB trade in deal was too tempting, but if Sony doesnt make a ton of disc drives available by the time it releases I'll be cancelling it.

  • It's been a little while since the Pro announcement, has disc drive stock improved?

    • Since the Pro was announced the disc drive sold out everywhere the next day. EB had them up for preorder at the same time as the Pro, but the website kept crashing and they sold out by the time I was able to get the checkout to work. Haven't seen them anywhere since. No way I'm trading my PS5 with disc drive for a Pro and not being able to play any of my games for months. I was excited for the Pro, but the excitement is waning fast.

      • The disc drives will resupply. There's no parts manufacturing to limit production, and Sony will get them out to meet demand in the economic interest of ensuring there's no barrier to the uptake of the Pro and for the profit margin on the accessory itself. I guess you could say it was poor planning not to have upscaled production before the Pro announcement.

I'm in the market to gift to a Digital edition owner because it's hard to justify the digital storefront costs and because this'll allow us to gift the family hard copy of games. I'll be patient on this, don't expect it to last too long..

  • Any clue if Drives purchased in the US will work with Aussie consoles?

    • It will be the same as fat PS5 consoles.
Games wont be region locked but blu-ray movies will be.

  • Just buy a ps5 slim disc and use the disc drive on your pro. You have until 31st January to return the ps5 for free and by then you will have a disc drive.

    • +1

      That's a actually genius 😁

      • Will this actually work ?

  • Keep your eye out!
A mate that works at JB said stores are getting stock today and tomorrow.
He was able to secure one for me.
I'm sure other places should be getting stock too.

    • Definitely recommend going into your local JB. I popped in today and they had 8 drives coming in this week and 4 had already been pre-purchased. They weren't doing orders over the phone and required payment up front.

  • Anyone had any luck finding any recently? I've been into a handful of JBs and told 'next year', some won't even take pre-orders for next batches. Gamesmen (up the road from me) basically said 'we're not getting any' in those exact words.

Kicking myself for not grabbing one back when PS5 Pro was announced but I really felt 'nah it'll be fine… Sony surely learnt from 2020 PS5 launch' - there's lots of console stock, no drive stock! Grr. I'm halfway through Rebirth on base Ps5 and its one of the few games with a great upgrade to it, so was kinda keen to swap to the Pro.. Ah well.

    • I'm shocked Sony hasn't restocked, this sales period is so critical with new hardware and holidays shopping 🤷‍♂️

      • Yeah it's insane… It's not like there's any major… Chip? Shortage that might affect this. Surely it's just basic parts.

They've gotta be doing this to help drive digital sales right? Keep drive stock low, force people to buy digital copies etc..

I ordered one from Ocean Keys JB Hi-fi on the 16th of November, they had none in stock but like 8 on order at the time.

Got notified yesterday it was ready for pickup and went by today to grab it.

Not sure if I just ordered at the right time, or if being in WA maybe there just isn't as much demand.

Probably just best to get an order in somewhere and start the process if you're keen though.

      • Sounds fair. My local jb won't take any so much have to head into a city store.

  • I paid and pre-ordered one from JB in Gepps Cross SA on 7/11/2024. No update so far. :(

  • Went into Miranda JB and got told I can't even pre order one. Online only? But online doesn't allow pre orders. Wat.
