No one is travelling it seems, I have never seen as many flight deals on Ozb as I have in the past few months….

    • +6

…or maybe a lot of people are travelling, airlines are ramping up services/capacity to meet and are competitively chasing forward bookings with sales..

      • +2

Or airlines realising they are no longer able to charge exorbinantly expensive tickets during the post-Covid travel boom

        • Some of the sale fares I've seen are cheaper than I paid for sale fares almost 20 years ago!
Money went a lot further then.

I'm guessing there was a post-covid pent-up demand boom, cash flow into airlines as a result so they increased services, but now post of living pressures adding up so people have cut back on travel but they are competing for market share.

I'm kind of annoyed I booked a couple of little trips - cause fares to Europe etc have been so low.

I'm pretty sure quite a number are impacted by the cost of living crisis.

But my other thought is that most have already done their post-Covid travel and will plan their next holiday 4+ plus years later. The airline ticket is only a partial cost - so imagine saving $2000 on tickets but spending $20K on other items that are not "on-sale"

There are multiple reason for the increase in sales.

Firstly the Chinese airlines have returned after most of their covid restrictions have ended. With how they work, they are supposed to give reasonable year round service with any route they are granted, so this is why we have the good discounting to destinations off peak as they need to fill their planes.

Cost of living crisis is obviously slowing down sales of tickets. I think also the initial rush after covid restrictions were dropped has ended, so people are more price sensitive and will wait out good deals.

Airline capacity is basically back to pre covid levels with all parked aircraft back in service. There was the issue with the early retirement of aircraft but airlines are now getting their orders filled by Airbus or Boeing or they are extending the life of the aircraft that were due to be retired.

    • I'm in Japan at the moment and I can tell you lots of people are flying. Packed to the rafters.

      • It's close to school holidays, so you do tend to get increased traffic around this period as people will take a week or two either side of school holidays.

Japan being a good value destination and being the new flavour of the month location does probably lead these flights to be heavily patronised.

  • Still waiting for a Japan flight departing 14th~17th April

Not likely to happen during school holidays.

  • Bummed that Brisbane has only one airline option flying direct to Vietnam, seems strange that Jetstar don't fly there.

$800 return ticket from Syd to Tokyo on Jetstar & with only 7 kg?
    No way!
You can fly there for about the same amount on a proper airline, like Singapore Airlines or other.

    • $800 return ticket

It's even worse than that. From the OP:

All fares one way and include 7kg carry on luggage. (emphasis added)

Many of those fares are duds, there's no mention of "return for free" on them either.
