      • Looks small from the outside but compared to my brother Corolla zr Hybird. The MG4 have a bigger boot and more interior space. MG4 Boot size even rival some small suv.

good price, better buy than the BYD dolphin at this price point.
quite keen to check out the KIA EV3 at 52k DA though

  • +2

Are MG car price fixed? Or we can negotiate and cashbaxk on top?

  • +1

I know different folks want different spokes… but I'm waiting for an EV with:

LiFePO4 lithium iron phosphate batteries, so I'm not concerned about randomly going up in flames
    2WD

16 or 17" wheels… not 18/19/20 I don't need the ouch at tyre replacement time

at least 500 km claimed range…. to give at least 400km real range

adequate power…. more than my toyota coast bus, so that's more than 97KW, more than the 65KW of beloved's 2005 toyota echo, less than the power/weight ratio of the 50KW of my old ducati…. less than the 245KW of an old XY GT 351 falcon… doesn't need as much as the 195KW of my FG falcon. Say… round 150KW.

Considering what's currently in the market…. I reckon about $30K would be fine. Don't need fancy leather, heated seats, air hatch, launch control, and a lot of other bollocks. But I'd be happy with a light duty towbar.

    • Same but basically I want a 1 Series or BRZ equivalent: 350km claimed to give me at least 300km, RWD, lightest car on the market.

You can only engineer yourself out of physics for so long, EVs are heavy and not as fun to drive. Happy to pay around 40k (which is kind of what the top of the range BRZ/86 used to go for).

I have fun beating an ice vw golf and bmw 3 something off the line at red light. Don’t know what your definition of fun..

        • Going around corners

          • -4

@miicah: You do you. Cornering is not much an importance to me as I prefer racing against slow ice cars at red light. Mg4 cornering is pretty stabilise due to the firm chassis.

Cornering pretty much only on a single lane alone most of the time.

  • Mannn the depreciation curve for buyers is real.

I have a feeling theres a lot of stock piling up.

    • +3

People buying a relatively cheap EV are not expecting a good resale.

But you do you. (Would like to write 'boomer' here; but the negs, the negs!)

    • +1

that will become less of an issue ongoing. the price of EV is down to close to the ICE prices. so the new car price won't keep dropping and driving the depreciation.

just the technology aspect now. that will take a few more years to stabilise. tech is there. just need to get it in the new models.

Looking to buy in September 2025.

    HODL.

    • -1

Have fun waiting. Already enjoying my mg4. Only good thing is that in 12 months you will have more choices of EV on the market. I’m also looking at the Sealion 06 GT as the next 2nd car replacement

      • +2

Yep, unless govt decided to kiss usa's ass.

        • +3

Can only see that happening if Dutton win the next election.

          • @ChickenAdobo: Voldemort doesn't stand a chance.
If the LNP wants to win, they need a candidate who doesn't come across as so sinister.

        • -4

unless govt decided to kiss usa's ass

You may not be aware of this simple fact, but since WW2 it became apparent that Australia's survival is heavily dependent on an alignment to a much larger ally capable defending it, and there is only one of those. So every government since then, both LNP and Labor has ensured that this alliance is maintained for good reason.

Absolutely terrific car, have been enjoying owning an Essence 64 over the last couple of months. Just an absolute pleasure to drive and super efficient.

    • Do you get over zealous beeps and warnings?

      • +2

Turns out all new cars do the same - it’s like being in an airplane before take off some days.

        • Nar, when I test drove the mg4 and then my ev I realised not all cars are the same.

The mg4 seemed like it randomly gave my warnings, though I suspect it was because a car was coming out a driveway 20 m away…. But it was just too sensitive.

          • @cloudy: I found the BYDs were just as beepy tbh - but you are correct that the defaults are a little sensitive, especially the Adaptive Cruise Control distance, but you can reduce that sensitivity distance and the rest I have gotten used to pretty quick.

            • @wazman67: BYDs have improved quite at lot with the latest update, beeps have been toned down a lot, and can be switched off without getting reset next time you start up,

              • @ZR6: That's definitely awesome… I just also found the Atto drove like a boat compared to the MG4. Always trade offs I guess!

                • @wazman67: I have Seal so wouldnt know, i have driven the Atto but not MG4 so dont know how they compare

        • Turns out all new cars do the same

This is one of the reasons I'm thinking of buying a old car as my next drive. All these beeps and warnings shit me to tears and make the idea of going for a drive just a horrible experience. As the OWNER of the car, you should be able to turn them off, but nanny state be fixated on nannying…

          • @1st-Amendment: I am led to believe that lots of the things that have to remain on by default are tied to receiving the highest possible ANCAP rating, so it's probably unlikely to change any time soon. The cost of EV adoption I suppose, though I have not found it too bad tbh, and once driving it doesn't bother you unless you drift out of lanes.

            • @wazman67:

The cost of EV adoption I suppose

Not just EV's, they all do it now since it's part of 'safety' BS. Apparently annoying bells and whistles are safer.
I took a few new cars for test drives recently and it was enough to make me not want to part with my money. I'm thinking that a 1990's Camry might be a better buy. Almost zero depreciation and it still works as a reliable car.

  • QLD gov $6k rebate applies to this too?

      Pretty sure that's finished.

We're nearing the end of 2024 and MG is still selling 2023 stock? That's a bit of a worry.

I was looking at the MG4 Excite 64 earlier this year but two things turned me off purchasing one: No mounting point for roof racks, and the really tinny sound system.

Also going over the speed limit makes the speed limit flash non stop on the dashboard. For something that's meant as a safety feature it's quite distracting.

    • No mounting point is easily fixable. I saw a mg4 with Thule roof rack and roof box. As for the sounds. You just upgrade the sounds which I’m planning to do after I add some Highway pack ppf.

And the safety feature can easily be turned off in the setting. It doesn’t flash like an epileptic tv show.

      • I asked about the flashing warning sign and if it can be turned off. Yes. But it turns back on every time the car is restarted, according to the salesperson.

There are roof racks for the MG4 but none of them are officially supported by MG4. If there's any damage from carrying a load, it's solely your responsibility as the car isn't designed for it. Upgrading the audio in a brand new car seems a bit strange.

The MG4 is a very neat package and quite enticing, but for me it wasn't there yet. In version 2 it'll be really attractive.

        • If you experience a Tesla sound system you will need to upgrade the mg4 sound system. It woefully bad but no car is perfect.

We're nearing the end of 2024 and MG is still selling 2023 stock?

Most EV's are in the same boat. The anticipated growth never materialised so lots of old EV stock everywhere. This is good for consumers as they now have to drop their prices to competitive levels to move them.

    • It's model year 2023. Meaning the car is being built unchanged since that version was released. No feature updates / changes.

There is no MY24 MG4 yet, quite likely they will skip and release an MY25 version with some changes.

Production date will usually be this year (some dealers might have old stock, but that's them, not MG, and would be a good argument to ask for an extra discount).

  • What kind of IoT services does this car have built in? It's rather annoying to see new cars force subscriptions for certain features.

    • -2

Like with iphones also forces a renewal of the hard ware when the car is no longer "compatible" with the latest software.

    • +1

Inbuilt Vodafone sim but no monthly payment so far. I’m sure it data collection for the software guys in China

  • I am sure the price reduction will help with the total cost of ownership as the depreciation becomes increasingly "cliff edge"

    • Every car that is not a Camry or F150 or similar has the same problem.

  • crappy 7 seater SUV or crappy battery car for more?
    tough choice

    • So what car you drive again?

      • Turbo SUV, I need an actual car to take me places

        • Ahh yes someone who enjoyed being on a lifetime petrol subscription. Enjoy the car mate.

          • @ChickenAdobo: Not lifetime, just until alternate sustainable options are available.
You all Ev adopters who spend stupid money think your smart over some $50 a fortnight saving but paying $60k more for the same car .
I mean if you have $$ spend it , I don't care , I prefer to use that money better

            • @botchie: I used to spend 4800 a year on petrol. Sold the thirsty suv and downsize to this car. Over 7 years I will save 30 grand in petrol money. Add the WA rebate. It will cost me less than 9 grand in ownership.

As I said enjoy your petrol subscription.

              • @ChickenAdobo: yeah but this bucket wont cut it for intrastate trips and family mate - glad your enjoying it though

  • Would be easier to buy a bag of charcoal and have a bbq in the garage with that instead of the car.

    • If you can’t afford it okay…

Good price. My wife just bought a Dolphin a few weeks ago so we test drove the Model 3, MG4 Essence and Dolphin Premium. MG4 was nicer drive but interior felt a lot cheaper / less premium (dolphin interior is weird but feels quality). I think even with this price cut my wife would've still chosen the Dolphin though. For her the tech was just a lot nicer in the BYD, also LFP batteries in the BYD are a big selling point. After owning a couple of weeks the Dolphin continues to impress, that said the local BYD dealership was just awful.

    • Yep LFP for the win. I'm waiting for the MG4 51, with LFP batteries, to join the discount party. Which Dolphin did she get? The 70kW of the Dynamic seem a tad less than I'd want, but the Premium at $6k extra appears pricey for an extra 15kWh and a stronger motor.

I've never done a test drive in the Dolphin, but was driving a tad behind on the next lane over from one recently on the road. One detail really pissed me off: the lights at the back are tiny compared to other cars, but appeared to output the same overall brightness, meaning they were very 'blinding' bright dots. Inconsiderate to say the least. Not sure if that should be (or even is) legal…

      • +3

You're right - the brakes lights and even indicators are oddly small, not sure why they did that. The tail light is really cool so I don't know why they didn't just use part of that for brakes and indicators. Also many people (me included) think the "build your dreams" on the back is tacky and I don't think it will be changed on the dolphin like other models as it's not really a badge, it's part of the whole tail light assembly.

Yeah I think the Dynamic is the better value one as it comes with all the tech of the Premium (the tech it has compared to the MG4 Excite is night and day, BYD even just added wireless carplay for example and don't even show it in the specs on their website). The only difference I'm aware of between Dynamic and Premium is slightly better rear suspension, bigger battery, two tone paint and a more powerful motor.

We didn't test drive the Dynamic but I'm guessing it would be pretty slow. The wife wanted the Premium because she liked the blue colour. We ended up getting an ex demo blue Premium with 2500kms on it for a similar price to what the dynamic would've cost.

The worst thing for us by far about the Dolphin compared to the MG4 is the suspension, it's really soft, great over bumps around the city but at speed it just kind of vaguely floats over the road and it's pretty disconcerting. If BYD could figure out how to make the Dolphin drive as well as the MG4 they'd have a great car (for people who don't mind the quirkiness at least).

        • That the thing that turned me off about the Atto 3 and appeared the Dolphin has the same characteristics as being floaty at high speed, I see that the sea lion 6 also suffer the same fate.

The Seal is pick the of the bunch if you don’t mind a sedan body.

          • @ChickenAdobo: Atto 3 is a family car, the suspension is tuned to reduce road bumps to give you that floaty feeling.

            • @lycheetea: Yeah I know. Hired the Atto 3 more than once. It great over bumps but Highway and freeway isn’t a pleasant experience.

              • @ChickenAdobo: Just want to say you're 100% right. Floating feeling is weird, I've just had the car for 1 day. Feels like I'm on a boat. But I'm coming from a 16 year old car, anything is like a 300% upgrade to me.

  • test drove one yesterday, and it's about right for what you pay. I found the steering to be way too light. Very busy interior.

    • +2

lol, are you sure you drove the MG4? The interior is the opposite of busy, it’s the most bland, “normal car” interior of any EV I’ve been in. Jump in a BYD and you’ll know what a busy interior is.

    • Steering way too light? Must be on eco mode or something. It has a better turning circle than a circle and the interior is plain Tesla-esque. Doesn’t sound like you test drove one.

  • What is the 4k factory bonus? Is this different to the 8k price discount?

    • The promo was 4K at the beginning of the month, but then they up'ed it to 8K only last week.

  • Can ALL EV posts include the RANGE in the post at least??? Tbh I care about the range more than anything else.

  • My friend bought one used for $25k 2023 model. Apart from plastic fantastic 1990 Corolla interior vibes, I like it. If it further depreciates to $15k in 2025, I might pick one up as a 2nd beater car in the family.
