Childcare Educators- What Is The Best Gift to Give to You and The Team When Saying Goodbye? Suggestions Wanted!

Hello all, we are moving house and will be an hour away from where we currently live. We need to change childcare for my son and I am distraught as I LOVE the childcare he is at now, and the educators are superb and just such a good bunch of people!

They really made me feel at ease when I first dropped him off when he was 12 months old, and they are just such lovely people and care for him so well- I want to give them a gift when we leave to say thank you and goodbye. I am trying to think of something they all can enjoy, perhaps in the staff room or something edible?

However, I don't want to buy them something they don't want or need. For anyone that works in childcare, what do you think is a good idea for a gift? A hamper of tea and treats? An UberEATS voucher so they can order in lunch and use the voucher to put towards that? Any other suggestions please? I would like to go up to $150 for the gift.

All you superstar childcare workers, please guide me in the right direction! :)

Yes exactly, I don't want to get them something they won't use or something they are given frequently.

A lot of young childcare workers so I'm thinking some early 2000's bangers.

Is it a private or public setting?

Public - please dont get anything. The amount of one-upmanship that happens is distressing for staff and other parents. It also triggers paperwork. Staff hate paperwork. Gifts of value are against the Public Service Code of Ethics and have to be declared.

Private - speak with the Director of the service. They may have their own policies and preferences. They may prefer something as simple as a card or nothing at all considering they have multiple shifts/teams etc to manage. If giving a voucher, for what team or people? Staff ratios are generally 1:5, so that may be an awful lot of coffee you're buying.

As a teacher, I like handmade pictures or cards or a note of thanks.

    • It's a childcare, my son is 19 months old. I understand there are private and state schools, however is it the same for childcare?

I won't give it infront of the other parents whatever it may be- I have got some homemade cards to give which will have some scribbles from my son on there! I am thinking of making a hamper box with snacks, teas, little things for them to keep in the staff room and have when they are on their break.

In SA there are government owned and run childcare so I suppose it just depends on who you're with. 🤷‍♀️

  • CASH, CASH, CASH.

They love stuff that they can use at the centre. Egg containers. Games they can play with the kids.
Go into vinnies or salvos and check out the kids games area and buy up and donate them as a leaving present.

Also go into Coles and Woolies and buy some fathers day chocolate stuff and take it out of the fathers day wrapping and give to the actual staff as a small thank you gift.
