WhichGrocer - Grocery Price Comparison Tool

Hi OzBargain Community, new here and first post!

I'm building a site to help people reduce their grocery bills. You simply enter your shopping list by searching for products and it will show you the cheapest price across Woolworths, Coles and IGA. Features include bulk price refresh, products are sorted sort by price / price per unit, and a few more things.

Friendly tips for searching and filtering. When searching, search by the main word of the product i.e. search for "pumpkin" instead of "Butternut Pumpkin Each". This will ensure you get the most results across all stores where they might have slightly different names.

Also for filtering, you can filter by multiple terms by comma separating and exclude by putting - in front. e.g. "diet,1.25l,-vanilla".

I hope you like it and it saves you money. I know I'm in the right community when the first post I ever see is another guy posting a similar tool but for mobile.

Looking forward to developing this further based on your feedback and suggestions and hope everyone here finds it useful.

Why do I need to create an account? To supply my email address to get spammed? No info on what happens with the email and data collected, so assuming it will be used for evil marketing purposes.

  • Hey great question and sorry for not mentioning in my original post. Creating an account allows your list to be saved so you don't need to put the same products in over and over. Just log in next week and press Refresh Prices to get the latest prices.

    • So the site is useless as I do not want to get spammed.

      • Thanks for your feedback. We now have a Privacy Policy here https://www.whichgrocer.com/privacy where you can find more information about what information is collected and how it's used.

We definitely do not sell / share personal information, so you do not need to worry about spam.

Let me know if you have any further concerns!

  • ADASA 😴

    • No way. No T&c anywhere, so www (wild wild west).

      • Could you share which terms and or conditions you would like to see applied to our users?

I'm okay with people using the site however they want as long as it is used as intended i.e. search for products and create shopping lists. Not much more you can do to be honest.

Look foward to hearing your thoughts on how to further improve

Australia's first bulk price checker for groceries

Ahh.. pricehipster, frugl? Where is your privacy policy? I understand you may not need to if you're not turning over $3m, but it will give your users a little trust knowing what information you're storing.

    • Thanks for sharing those sites. Great to see others have already got solutions up and running.

I've made a note to remove that tag from the front page. You'll see it gone in the next update!

Fair point on the privacy policy also,I'll add one in. The site only stores the bare minimum personal information i.e. email address and the list of products associated with that email. Nothing is shared / sold.

  • Most grocery price comparison websites fail to be successful because Coles and Woolies update their security for other websites to crawl them and the Devs needs to keep updating the website which, to my understanding, not worth the hassle.

How you guys gonna keep up?

    • You are right, Woolworths especially has been an interesting challenge. I don't really see it as a hassle and keeps me occupied after work :)

I'll keep it running as long as people find it useful.

Edit: in case you were asking as to the actual how, we use rotating proxies to distribute requests to avoid ip bans and monitor the sites daily for changes and update as required.

      • Are you scrapping the website or using their backend API for Woolies?

        • Just found out there are API's for all stores including Aldi, excited to bring a full list Aldi products soon.

  • Front page says try now for free, how much you going to charge after it's free?

    • Item lookup using the search, and the price refresh function will remain free to use.

The other features such as shopping list optimization, and price drop panel and price history will be $2/month. On average people are saving about 15-20 dollars / per week so hopefully that is a fair amount.

Appreciate your thoughts if you think otherwise.

Would love to try, but have to create an account.

    • -1

Thanks for your feedback. Yep agree, creating accounts is annoying but it was necessary for the core function of the site to work i.e. as shopping preplanning tool, we needed an account to tie everything together. Otherwise all the work you do is lost when you leave.

Hope you can spare a few minutes to create a account, I am certain you can make back the time in savings :)

  • I would rather have Aldi than IGA.

Hi Yola, we partially support Aldi already but are limited to displaying only the products they display on their online store.

Once they set up their website with all products, we'll share them also.

That is the problem their online store is hopeless.

  • Thank you to everyone for the comments and suggestions. I've made updates based on your feedback, including auto add similar products. Lots of new features coming soon!
