Which ATMs in Vietnam with Macquarie Debit, NAB (from Citibank) and HSBC

Hi All

Heading to Vietnam and wondering which ATMs I can use that don’t charge ATM fees.

I have the Macquarie debit, NAB (converted from Citibank) and the HSBC card.

Landing at Ho Chi Minh Airport and want to get some cash at the airport so wondering if there are ATMs at the airport I can withdraw cash from without incurring ATM fees.

I also heard there are different withdrawal limits for each bank.

I read on Whirlpool that VP Bank and TP Bank ATMs don't charge a fee but can anyone confirm that is the case and which card of the three I listed works.

REPORTING BACk: so far I used:
- 12/09 HSBC Debit Visa card to withdraw from a HSBC ATM, withdrew $8M Dong, no fee. Rate AUD1=VND16,247, XE.com rate VND16,414 - % Spread 1.0302%
- 12/09 Macquarie Debit at VP Bank to withdraw $5M Dong, no fee. Rate AUD1=VND16,234, XE.com rate VND16,414 - % Spread 1.1102%
- 16/09 Macquarie Debit at VP Bank to withdraw $5M Dong, no fee. Rate AUD1=VND16,393, XE.com rate VND16,577 - % Spread 1.1197%

  • I would think that Macquarie Debit will not charge you for international withdrawal ATM fees, however, the ATM operators may charge you a fee for using their ATM machine.

    • Yeah, I know that. I was wondering which ATM in Vietnam won’t charged me ATM operator fees.

Please try some and report back…

  • I was there earlier this year, I didn't find any that didn't charge ATM fees, but the lowest one I did find was HD bank. I tried 2 or 3 other banks, but they all charged more fees than HD bank. I can't remember the charge exactly, I think it was like 3200vnd to withdraw around 3million VND each transaction. Maybe try some banks and report back.

  • Try HSBC or VPBank when you land. Report back too please.

  • TP Bank did not charge a fee when I was there last time, mid-market conversion rate. (I believe VP Bank also)

I don't think you will find any fee-free ATM at the airports but it isn't hard to stop on the way into the city and withdraw or just bite the bullet for a one time fee.

I had all the cards in HCM last year and convinced i would get best rates with them. Turns out the stores that sell gold have higher exchange rate than XE! So some aud goes a long way there. It was the same in Nha Trang…

  • Vote for VP Bank and TP Bank!

  • Also vouch for HSBC card in HSBC ATM in Saigon, Danang, Hanoi. No fees.. live visa exchange rate (withdraw VND from AUD).. make sure choose “current” for account .. i find that “credit” or “saving” will get rejected. Choose other amount - 10M seem to be max per withdrawal but you can insert card again to withdraw multiple times..

Something to note: VND is not listed as one of the currency in the account.. so withdraw VND will get converted via visa rate. If you withdraw currency that is on the list it will use HSBC rate which subject to buy/sell spread which is worst then visa rate (CAD, EUR, GBP, HKD, JPY, NZD, SGP, USD)

  • Just came back from VN and would like to add that the NAB (Citibank) gave better rate than Macquarie card.

I tested by withdrew from each card at same TPBank's ATM within minutes.

    VND$3 Millions cash each
    NAB : AUD$183.92
    MacB : AUD$184.80

That coz Mac is mastercard rate and nab is Visa rate. there is a slight difference. depends on the day, one is not aways better then the other

  • Just been using TP Bank ATM in Danang and no fees charged. Only ATM I've ever found fee free using wise card.

  • This might be a bit late in the going for this thread but, I have not been to Vietnam for a few years and I am going later in 2025.
Is tap and pay a thing there? Everywhere else I have been in Asia since COVID is using cards now, almost to the point of no need for cash.
How much is that the case in Vietnam? Any advice from recent travellers most welcome, TIA

Not many places use tap and go, more of an insert and go. And I almost never had to sign or put in a pin, even for purchases larger than the contactless limit applied in Australia. Most proper shops have card facilities and usually no surcharge if you have one of the no international transaction fee card. But many of the popular eating places catering for local don't have card but using qr code, for which I recommend you use cash if you ever eat there.

currently in Vietnam, and I was surprised by the number of places with tap and pay. most corner stores (7-11 type places), small cafes and restaurants are no issues. (at least if it is place that gets a few tourists). btw research which ATMS allow for cash withdrawals at a good rate with zero fee. VPBank is the one I use.
