I have one of these and they don't work too well with starchy medium or short grain white rice. No matter how much I rinse & clean them beforehand, they will always boil over and leave a mess in the microwave.

This is only really good for long grain rice (i.e. basmati) and brown rice (medium grain is fine) because they release less starch when cooked, and only in smaller quantities (usually 1 to 2 cups).

Do these release microplastics into your food?

    • Of course but so does everything else.

The “rice cooker” here is left open during the cooking stage and sealed only when finished and it works pretty well from what I have seen.

Why isn’t a ceramic bowl with lid a better option than this plastic thing?

        but so does everything else.

        I doubt it.

  • I'm all for convenience, but this micropalstic thing definitely has me spooked.

Easy no-stick recipe in a steel saucepan or cast iron pot for what it's worth:

    1. Rinse rice
    2. To each 1 cup, add 1.5 - 2 cups water depending on how you like your rice.
    3. Bring to just boiling
    4. Turn hotplate down to minimum - cook for 15-20min
    5. Turn off heat and rest for 10 mins - then fluff up with a spoon

Works every time for perfect rice - doesn't stick either!

    Love to all x

    • This. I don't understand the need for a dedicated tool for cooking rice. It is hard to get it wrong and the recipe above works every time.

The variant I use is to fry the rice for a minute with butter first, then add boiling water and salt onto it. The ratio is roughly 2.5 cups rice to 4 cups water for basmati.

      • Sometimes when travelling all you have access to is a microwave.

        • Fair point. I was mainly thinking of dedicated electric rice cookers.

  • I love these - 12 minutes makes perfect fluffy rice every single time. One less thing to have on the stove.

  • I used one to great effect when living at university, though like a lot of people after a year I bought a normal rice cooker to make it in my room and just made sure it wasn't visible from the hallway
