At its core this is really a promotion to encourage people to use the awful app.

        • +33

Okay, so don't use the app or claim the deal.

Find something else to fill your weekend rather than whinge. I recommend a paid ticket to the zoo.

            • +13

@DMFD: The real irony is complaining about something that's free on a bargain posting website, then turning it into a political soapbox.

              Votes speak for themselves.

      • +1

At its core, this offer is a WA Gov vote buying exercise. People who had no intention of going to the zoo can now do so for free!!

        • Of course, you are correct.

      • +1

I'd say less about the app, more about the upcoming state election… (although I'm sure they're trying to find some use for the app to justify the cost too)

    • +1

What's wrong with the app? And the government?

      • +1

I haven't used the app in a long time but at launch it was quite buggy and frustrating to setup.
In a more general sense there's some distrust in the app because the last time WA gov put out an app it was for covid contact tracing, they said all the data was private. Then WA police used the data to track a murder case, breaking a lot of trust.

    • Someone still salty about the GST redistribution

Its funny how we're so bad that we have record immigration into our state from other states…

  • +1

This would never happen in NSW.

    • +1

Closest thing is you pay $1 to go to taronga on your birthday.

    • +7

Reasonable decision. Cost of travel to WA from NSW would negate most of the benefit…

    • +44

Plot twist, we fenced you all out 😉

      • +5

I miss when QLD fenced everyone but WA out 😔

  • -3

Can I use in Sydney taronga zoo

    • +8

      Yes

  • +2

Best zoo I’ve been to in Aus is Halls Gap Zoo. Never been so close to a rhino or a giraffe… and you get to feed the deer. Perth is really good too.

    • -1

I went to a zoo and all they had was a dog.

      It was a Shih Tzu

  • +4

Thanks OP. pretty sick. Family of 4 and was planning to go the zoo soon.

  • Anyone successfully redeemed this offer?

I see the offer in the app but unable to redeem as it a processing circular arrow is displayed

    • It should eventually respond and allow you to go through and pick a date…..just keep waiting a good few minutes.

      • Thanks OP. Did you already book your tickets? Mine has been spinning for half an hour?

    • When it shows blank page then close it and reload, it would work.

    • +2

There was a message in the app when I booked to fix the spinning circle, I had to go to 'Passes' and acknowledge something about covid, then go back to the offer and it works.

      • Same here, did that and it worked

  • -1

    Free public transport?

    • +2

"free public transport to and from the zoo"

      • +4

The pass will also provide ticket holders with free public transport to and from the zoo as part of a $6.2 million initiative the government says will save families more than $110 on a day out to the zoo.

        damn nice

        • +1

At least they're not forcing us to spend $20 on a Smartrider for the free transport this time either.

  • +9

Ok so killing app wasn't enough. Had to log out of ServiceApp and log back in again which took a few steps. All good though got tixs thanks guys!

    • Same here!

  • -4

Is it possible to get this if I'm not a citizen of Western Australia? We're visiting Perth next month but our Birth Certificate's show that we're Victorian.

    • +3

Nobody is a citizen of WA. Do you mean resident? Only one way to find out - download the app, identify yourself with one of several government issues IDs (all of which are tied to your residential address) and see what happens.

      • Thank you for your reply. I don't have a drivers licence and neither my Passport or my Birth certificate has a residential address on it so should work just fine.

        • Not having an address printed on it doesn't mean it's not linked to your address. Certainly worth a try though.

  • +1

Someone will correct me, but the offer mentions a (paid) upgrade is possible to a Zoo annual Pass. From memory Perth used to be one of the cheapest ones for this and it entitled you access to Zoos in other states. Haven’t looked this up yet… I can’t decide what date I want to go to the zoo.

    • I think the you can convert it to membership within a week after your visit.

  • +1

    Your call now! @MELBOURNE ZOO

    • +5

Upon hearing this PTV decided to triple the public transportation fees to the zoo.

  • +1

FYI You don't need the app, check the FAQ's you can get in free without it but they only have a limited amount of tickets available per day so you gotta be there first ;)

    • From their website -
There will be a small number of Perth Zoo Free Passes available at the Zoo entry, BUT they’ll be very limited, so your best bet is to book in via ServiceWA.

Has anyone tried this? We plan to go on a weekday. Hoping this works.

      • Haven't tried but when you go can you ask the staff how many tickets per day they have and let us know (maybe there isn't actually any limit at all, who knows).

Don't forget to take something to show you're a WA resident.

        • We went today. Got there nice and early and were able to get in. Told the staff we were having issues verifying on the app, she hand wrote our details on a paper and gave us the tickets. the zoo is awesome 10/10 would recommend,

  • Why don't they just make the zoo affordable. $38 per adult + $19 per child means people never go. Family of four = $114 outing. Make it $10 per person and people would make a habit of going every month or two thereby increasing demand. You end up selling more tickets and making more money. Either way they have to fund the place to keep the animals alive. Why make the paywall so high. It's just greed.

    • +6

It's not greed, it's basic economics. They're charging the price that gets them the best return. A quarter of the price won't mean they get four times the visitors. Even if it did, that increased count would drastically affect both the visitor experience (who wants to go to a zoo where you can't see the animals for other visitors in the way?) and increase the maintenance and staffing costs.

The zoo can be ridiculously busy on weekends at the current pricing, so it doesn't seem too great a deterrent.

If you want to go every month or two, get an annual pass. That's what we did when our kids were little and my son still does now he's in his twenties. Makes it way less than your $10 a visit if you're that keen.

      • Perth Zoo is publicly owned, so it needs to balance its profit motive with providing benefit to the community. As stated by the premier himself in the article, affordability is an issue for working class WA families. I forgot about annual passes, which make it significantly cheaper, albeit with a greater front-loaded hit to the budget which can be too high a barrier for many.

So the annual pass is 92/adult, 57/child. Assuming monthly visits that's $7.66 /adult and $4.75 /child. Which still makes the $38 and $19 tickets seem more ridiculous. When you opt for a flexible monthly option vs yearly it should cost more but not 5X the price.

        • If Netflix did a similar model where the monthly ticket is like 40% of the yearly:
Premium = $25.99 per month which is $311.88 per year.
So it'd be priced at $311 annual upfront OR $124 per month.

    • +1

If you really go every month or two, you can get it even cheaper by buying a zoo membership. $298 for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids). Cheaper than 3 times regular tickets. Or cheaper than you suggestion, if you go at least 8 times a year.

With this offer you can also get discounted membership.

    • +2

Most zoos are not for profit. So their fee is basically to break even. They have limited budgets from governments. Its like public transport, most of the time they need government funding to keep alive. Its not cheap to send a giraffe to the other side of the world. Its not cheap to hire ingoing professional zoologists. Then medical care for aging animals. To renovate new enclosure etc. You could cut costs, do we need african animals? Do we need 4 giraffes, can one suffice.

Some may argue what benefit these provide to society. Eg art galleries, libraries, museums and zoos, sporting facilities. Personally would like a choice but can understand these costs us

  • +2

Thanks, Ill save that $100 and spend $150 on food for the family at the zoo

    • That'll get you one burger and one fries….

    • +2

You can take your own food and drink in, no need to spend a cent
However, good luck keeping the kids away from the gift shop on the way out…

  • So the only way to get this is having a service WA account.

The only way to login to service WA is to have a mygovid account, which has been in limbo for years. I've been getting the "your identity cannot be verified" since I first tried to sign up. Google says no matter what anyone tried they couldn't fix it. Their phone lines are too busy.

Seriously, they've just given the contracts for these apps and services to their mates who couldn't care less, they all got their bag

      • MyGovID hasn't been around that long. It was only released in 2019.

    • Try MyGovID again if you haven't tried it since Covid times. It doesn't take much to get to basic or even standard ID level, I was finally able to get mine to strong today after many years of not being able to verify my selfie. The only difference being is that I have a new phone now. My old phone had a great camera but there was just something about it that refused to work.

  • Would prefer free tickets to the royal show instead…. Funny thing the normal ticket prices are cheaper than Perth zoo….

    • +5

The animals at the zoo are tamer than the royal show attendees.

    • It's half price for adult and free for kid.

  • +1

After 23 years in Perth, I will finally go to the zoo….

    • +2

Sydney Taronga Zoo is Adults $47.70, Child $27.90
Perth Zoo is adults $38.10, Child $19.05.

      Enjoy the zoo!

      • I'm in Qld - Australia zoo is:

        Adult: $71.95
        Child: $46.50
        Conc: $61.95

        Family of 4: $217.95
        Family of 5: $249.95

  • Awesome, thanks OP. Got a family member from overseas staying with us at the moment so will be good to take them.

  • Thanks OP. Went through all the trouble to get the tickets. Guess it's worth it for the family.

  • Am I the only one who gets the continuous spinning loading circle?

    • +1

@Ozbargainasaurus read the part above the spinning wheel. Says to accept something in the passes section.

      • @jlogic thanks. No good. I reinstall app, press "Got it "on permissions on first screen, then spinning wheel.

This is cool but isn’t the zoo going to be crazy busy now? In QLD they did a thing after the GC Christmas storm where residents could claim a $50 discount to a range of attractions. I feel if the gov wanted to promote the app it might be better to have a range of attractions that people can claim free tickets to. Otherwise people are going to be complaining about how busy it and the public transport to get there is and it may backfire on the gov. Great promo otherwise. Enjoy your free zoo trip Western Australians.

    • +3

Ah see, you think everyone is like us here. See a bargain, claim it right away and actually use it.

In practice: Many people will see it thanks to the huge media coverage. Most won't even claim because they either forget to or find the app too cumbersome. And of those who claim, at least half will not attend.

All up, from the view of the government: lots of positive publicity, and a small up-tick in zoo visitation and public transport use. And some more people install the app.

Quite likely the zoo approached them first and said: guys, we need a top up to the budget, or we'll have to close, cost of bamboo shoots has gone crazy, you know, and visitation numbers are down due to the cost of living crisis. Then someone in government came up with this idea. They have to funnel extra funds to the zoo (imagine the backlash if they didn't!), but might as well maximise the political points that can be scored from it at the same time…

      • True I do assume people think like an OzBargainer, which probably isn’t correct. Though I know in QLD with the 50c public transport it’s lead to a lot of people complaining about how busy it is for big events.

cost of bamboo shoots has gone crazy

Lucky the only two giant pandas in Aus are in Adelaide 🐼

Hmmm, is this a biased view or is it really that bad?
But then again, free is free

    • +1

It's one of the better smallish zoos. Anyone who goes to the zoo and expects all of the animals to be parading themselves like some sort of circus is bound to be disappointed, particularly if they go on a stinking hot day when the animals are being sensible and staying indoors.

I've not been in a few years but my son goes every few month and loves it.

    • That review is silly. We went today and the zoo is awesome. Did the expect all the animals to be crammed in one enclosure?

  • Hi

Im in Melbourne and thinking about going to Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary Adelaide Zoo to see the Pandas. I saw this thread and noted that the yearly membership to Perth Zoo is $92 which is cheaper than Melbourne or Adelaide Zoo. I understand that it gives reciprocal rights to enter to Victoria Zoos.

I'm also quite jealous of our sandgroper friends being able to get a 40% discount if they are WA residents. It hurts because I was a WA resident for ten years many moons ago.

Is anyone aware of any working discount codes or deals for Perth memberhips at the moment?

    Thanks Peter
