Help with Generator Purchase Please

I need to buy a generator for the house.

I am getting the changeover switch installed this week. The electrician said I need Generator with a 15 amp outlet and needs to be min 3 kva. I am thinking 5-6.5 KVA. He said stay away from Kings and look for brands such as Briggs and Honda. I would like to buy one that is on the quieter side.

I know next to nothing about generators so hoping someone can help with advice or best places to buy, what other brands to consider or avoid, any good deals. I am on the Gold Coast.

Thanks

  • Honda eu70 is meant to be pretty good. Should be able to find one around $6000 pretty easily.

  • I got one of these a few years back, no problems at all, starts every time.

Nothing wrong with Kings. I know a few people who use them regularly when the power is out and have had no issues. For the price you could get 2 and still be ahead. Just build an enclosure to keep the noise down.

I'd look into a battery that can charge on solar before dropping big money on a fancy generator.

  • Whats your budget..
FWIW I'd stick with Honda quality.

  • Does it need to be portable?

  • Prefer to stick to $5k or under

    • You aren't helping yourself. Does it need to be portable? Is it only for backup in case of outage? How often will it be used?

      • It’s just for the home in case of more blackouts. I’m guessing it would be used once or twice a year. I guess portable would be good. As mentioned I know very little about this. All of the ones I’ve looked at seem to be portable.

        • Diesel is what I would buy, as petrol gensets are a pain in the ass. Petrol goes bad, carbs gum up etc when they aren't used regularly. Heaps of small non-portable gensets on marketplace, they are also in full enclosures so are possibly quieter.
