I like ours, but I fear when Google is going to stop supporting these. They don't get many updates if any, and the voice recognition is horrible. Sometimes I would need to shout at it within 1m of it to register.

    • I've got Google hub and Amazon echos and much prefer the echos. They both have pros and cons, but we're gradually shifting to be an all Amazon house.

How's the ads on Amazon ?

        • Minimal to none. The only ads received are on the screens of the Shows and for Echo features every fourth screen rotation. I receive none on the Dots.

        • I don't know what people are complaining about. I have mine set to only show the click and weather. Everything else is turned off, and I get no ads.

      • Same, I have one of the original Google Home Minis that sits on my computer desk, as well as 2 Amazon Echo Show 8's, one as an alarm clock and the other in the kitchen. Also one of the original echo dots in the laundry.

No matter where I am in the house, one of the Echos will hear me. The Google Home Mini is as deaf as a brick wall and I have to shout at it.

I am shifting away from nest hubs too. Recently having to shout and repeat multiple times. These used to be really responsive before.

noticed the same thing too with my kitchen unit and thought maybe the microphones were dirty or something, now wondering if its a software issue?

        • Planned obsolescence

          • @giventofly: Came back to reply this! I think they probably sent an update to do this

    • I disagree; voice recognition in English is great. It even understands some non-native speaker accents, which is incredible. But yeah, it can turn into a pumpkin at any moment.

Using it for more than 6 years, only a bit lag when choosing YouTube to play. Would like to upgrade to tab and dock but too expensive

    • +2

I'm the opposite, thinking of selling tab and dock and getting this. Do not actually need tablet separately.

      • +3

You guys should just swap haha

We have one, can’t stand it. So laggy and voice recognition is so bad… the amount of “hey google” being screamed at it is doing my head in

Google seemed to be phasing out of a lot of their other screens and smart speakers as they are becoming harder to find at some retailers lately.
I was fully expecting them to release another range or generation of smart home products at their keynote in august but nothing came.
I'm wondering if we see something else soon?
Their smart home range is definitely due for a refresh (and more than just the tablet they released)

  • For this to fully with with a Nest Secure subscription (as security camera), you have to set it up through the Nest app, not the Home app. Event management and all didn't start working until I set up the Nest app for our Google Nest Secure smoke alarms (which also don't work with the Home app). Go figure.

Google made a mess of the integration.

After Google removing the voice calls between home/nest devices which used to be an important feature, had to dump all Google home devices and moved to Echo and pretty happy so far. Fingers crossed, and hope Amazon does not remove the calls between devices in future.

I must speak clearly or something. I have 3 x Hub Max and 3 x Hub around the house, and find the speech recognition is generally excellent.

Having said that, if I were starting again now I'd probably go with something else. The cameras are clunky and the software development seems slow to non-existent.

  • I really wonder how these survive without monthly subscription, I use them a lot like
    Control devices
    Set reminders
    Play songs (YouTube india subscription)
    Many routines.

Not sure what is covering their api costs. I know they spy me and show ads on phone. But still the mini is worth when I bought for $19

  • So much of these speakers rely on Routines from Google Assistant.
And thats not going to be supported by Gemini, hence i havent switched on my Android.

Wouldnt buy google smart home related devices until they have a clearer direction

  • Half the features don't work, ours no longer displays the temperature on the photo frame and no longer plays radio stations it used to.
It's useless at voice recogntion. Are Google even supporting them anymore?

    • Everytime I ask mine for a weather forecast it gives me forecasts from completely different suburbs, many no where near me, it's quite bizarre, I've changed house maybe 30 times now

      • Mine did the same. Set your home location in the home app.

  • Went to Docklands Costco, the price is still the old $299. Asked the staff there and they said it's probably online only
