FIFO to Work Local, How Did You Do It?

After the better part of 9 years of working FIFO or DIDO I have decided I want to take a break.

But it's damn hard to find anything local (Perth SOR) with my skill set. I am a mobile plant operator primarily but with skills in technology and mechanical areas. Any earth-moving type work seems to want me to jump on that damn freeway everyday which more or less means I would spend a workday at least in traffic each week.

How did you or someone you know transition back? I am assuming tradies with certifications have a more fortunate time but hearing your stories might give me inspiration.

  • Dont know how applicable it is but what about water? Desal, water treatment plants etc? In SA certainly they are constantly looking for people

  • Buddy of mine did FIFO for years, but stopped when he had a kid. Tried to get into local jobs, and eventually got into manufacturing. But is now looking to go back due to the money and the kid being older

    • Yeah, it's a bit like that. Just kinda at the end of the career progression ladder when it comes to earthworks unless I wanna take on more risk with SFA of a incentive.

  • Has Chris Ellison's net worth dropped below $1B following this year's collapse in Min Res share price yet?

    • I thought all his employees were chained to their desks

Could always study. Move into completely different work. Get a quick cert IV or diploma that suits the work/life balance you're looking for.

That's my goal but need a job to keep a roof over my head first, hopefully find time between that will let me reskill.
