Toshiba AT270 7.67" Quad-Core 16GB Tablet $249 + Shipping ($12.85+ or $0 Pickup) from BCC in Vic

530

If you're looking for an alternative to the Nexus 7, the Toshiba AT270 Excite 7.7 is a great look at the same price. Differentiating factors are that it has a faster processor (1.6 VS 1.2 Ghz), 5MP rear camera and microSD slot. However, it's only got Android 4.0.

Comparison on GSM arena:

I can't vouch for BCC Computers as I've never bought it from them, but there is a rep on Ozbargain and they have physical stores in Victoria, so pickup is an option.

I'm from Australia and I had no idea either.

  • I have just posted a comment on toshibas facebook page about the jellybean update and asked the likelyhood of this happening. I have also suggested releasing root access, unlocked bootloader and sources with providing support to cyanogenmod developers to enhance the life of this product, i would appreicate if anyone who has bought this tablet show their support and share the posting, it can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/ToshibaANZ

    thanks in advance

Mhhh think toshibas deleted my post….. if you can find it let me know, i hate companies who delete feedback and serious questions… totaly rude..

      • OK had a reply from Toshiba. The are willing to provide the sources but not an unlocked boot loader which is pretty much useless having the sources. No comment about jb either. If the new se model is released with same spec surely its not that hard to update this model and it will come soon. If not then Toshiba have a very similar style to lg . Buy a product and let customers buythe latest edition for updates when the hardware is fully capable of running new android , this is a marketing and bad strategy as they won't last long with the likes of Samsung and Google releasing updates pretty quick for there tablets. The only reason I bought thus was it was cheap, good spec an suited my needs for a video/eBook reader for my hols.

        • Sources of what?

This looks like a really top notch tablet, although I think Toshiba really have stuffed this up with the high price and accessories.

HDMI only works via the dock. Although not ideal I suppose I can live with this. $100 is a bit pricey for HDMI capbilites. But wait it gets worse, the dock itself does not come with an A/C(USB) charger. You are expected to use the one that came with the tablet or buy an extra. The spare AC Adapter is $49.95… you kidding me! So you can ONLY charge via the supplied cable, and you can only buy a spare from Toshiba for $50, and purchasing the HDMI Dock, which is actually a charging dock for $100 won't give you an extra cable. Add to that the lack of any cases avialable.. and you have probably the best quality tablet avialble with the worst accessories options, no wonder Toshibba are failing to sell this.
They are trying to charge a premium for the tablet itself and then they charge you through the nose for the rest.

Happy for the price I got this for, but I will be thinking very seriously about whether I need a spare cable or HDMI cabilities. Its ashame, cause charging from USB is the one thing my ACER Iconia does not do, so it was top of my list as a must have on my next tablet. The fact that I can USB charge is good, however not being able to make the most of the multitudes of spare microUSB cables I have or be able to afford to have a spare cable jusr for the sake of having a spare cable kinda defeats the practicality of it.

Again, the tablet itself is awesome. Not complaining about the Tablet itself or the price.

Also just a note on the above comment about Jelly Bean and unlocking bootloader, I wouldnt hold me breath on either happening, I've been through all the entire official Excite forum and its full of developers requesting root access, all requests are falling onto deaf ears.

For those interested here is the complete list of over priced and mostly useless accessories.

  • Hi Rep,

Ive received my tracking reference but auspost website says its been sent via registered mail. I paid for express delivery, i've looked at the online tracking it was shipped out yesterday and is still in Geelong, Vic. With express delivery i should of expected it today. Can you please confirm that the item was sent express if not can you please refund me the difference in postage that i paid for.

    Charges on your website:
    Australia Post Registered $16.50
Australia Post Registered with insurance $19.40
    Australia Post Express $24.80

    My order number #196

    Thanks Paul

    • Paul, how did you get the tracking code? I have picked auspost express too but havent got any tracking code.

    • Hi Paul
Sorry about this, there is a lot things going on this week because we have a new store open tomorrow.

If it is not sent with express, we will refund the difference. please send a email to [email protected]

Sorry again for all the troubles.

      • Thanks rep I will be in touch as soon as I get delivery.

  • I got an email from the Geelong store with a tracking number Wednesday afternoon. I did order early Sunday morning so probably in the first batch of internet orders. Its still showing in Geelong so I'm guessing it has been shipped registered rather than express as geelong to qld is guaranteed next day with express post. If this is the case I definitely expect a postage refund. I will see when its finally delivered as the postage package will indicate what service has been used. I also emailed the store who sent the tracking email but not heard anything yet……

  • Got call from the store @ about 6:15pm last night and was able to make it down to pick up my order from the Knox store last night before they closed :)

    First impressions

It's an interesting device, but the unboxing itself is nothing to write home about - in almost OEM/refurb fashion, comes in an plain-ish brown cardboard box, with nothing more than the charger cable and a few minor pieces of documentation, so that experience was a little underwhelming!

That said, the screen really is quite the experience as everyone has espoused online, but it does come off to me as a little fuzzy (context: my SOE for the last year+ have been the retina displays of the iPhone 4 + iPad 3)

It's also not quite as one handable as I'd hoped (not sure why I didn't realise I wouldn't able to reach the opposite corner of screens one handing the device) but at the same time when reading comics/books, I do appreciate the extra size (i.e. the .7" as compared to the N7)

And for those making the transition from iOS to Android, be prepared for a steep learning curve, and start trying to really learn the swype input, because the tap keyboard is pretty crap compared to iOS. Not saying that Android is unintuitive, it's just different to iOS, and for those who have grown up in that eco system, there is quite a bit adjustment, so good to be aware as you're diving in so as to not be frustrated.

There's also a slight hint of lagginess (esp in regards to web browsing/zooming in/out of web pages), to which I can start to see why people would preference the N7 (with JB/Project Butter + ability to receive future updates) over what would seem to be an easy choice for the superior build quality of the AT270 + microSD, but it's still quite usable in it's current ICS guise, so am ok the idea so far of if they never decided to provide upgrades to JB.

    • so this one is a refurb/oem version? or just almost? I dont want a refurb version and gonna refund the device if it's refurbished

      • As far as I can tell it's not refurb/OEM, and my comment was more so that it just doesn't come in a glossy box but you might want to give BCC a call to confirm.

  • Oh, and there has been some note of the vague similarity of dimensions between this and the iPad Mini, so looking at those (not so snug) casing accessories is an option (http://www.thriveforums.org/forum/toshiba-excite-7-7/16183-e…)

    Hi Rep,

Can you give us an update on whether you have these back in stock? If so I will order. Thanks.

    • Just called BCC up and the guy said they have sold about 30 of the 40 on backoder. Not sure how true this is. The guys said if you want one place the order online and you will be in the queue. He also said, they got the last batch available from Toshiba Australia, but who knows if this is last ever or last of current stock etc?
For those who have placed orders on backorder, he said not expected for 1 to 1.5 weeks. I said thought they might come in today, he said not as far as he is aware. Take it with a grain of salt. I think I will look elsewhere that has stock even if paying a bit more.

      • I've actually heard in my travels on the web that these are actually now discontinued by Toshiba, as they'll look to release a "new" version early next year. Given the recent release of the Excite 10 SE version (exactly the same, save it actually come with JB + is cheaper), I imagine the new version will be the 7.7 SE in the same vein (and maybe why they're reticent to update the current stock to JB).

        • It appears you are right on the 10inch version. I just read the same thing which is they are releasing on 6/12/12 in US a new Excite 10 SE and as you noted has the new 4.1 Jelly Bean version installed. Besides that, the specs are largely the same but the price is cheaper by US$100. Bloody stupid if you ask me, cause it only gets those who bought the standard edition irate that they will not get updates to their tablets. This only leads to more complaints for them and surely is negative in the long run.
Now I have to reconsider if I should get this one or not, since I know they will most likely never release an OS update for this model.

        • This kind of things make me wanna choose ipad mini or nexus 7 instead of toshiba, toshiba really doesn't care about customer service like at all, ignoring updates, and releasing new OS in device with the same spec to make people dump their old expensive toshiba and buying a new one, example of a bad company so to speak.

    Hi Guys
    its finally here! http://d.pr/i/iZTk.
    5:20pm friday 7th Dec

    • Can I come and collect one tomorrow am at Wantirna? How many do you have?

    • for express delivery to Melbourne, how long is it gonna take? around monday or tuesday am I right?

    • If I place an order today will I receive before Christmas? Is the in stock on the website mean in-stock or back order?

  • how would you compare this tab vs toshiba 7.7 (EB Games has the 7.7 for $248 on Monday so same price)
toshiba has better battery life which is a big plus

    • I believe they are the same. They advertise this tablet is Excite 7.7, in fact its screen is only 7.67in

    • +1

The one in EB Games is AT100 which is toshiba thrive I guess, while this one is AT270 which is excite.
From what I know excite is newer compared to the one in EB Games, correct me if I'm wrong.

      • Yup, that's what the EB ad seems to say (http://ebworld.ebgames.com.au/index.php?action=message&l=1&c…), with the Excite/AT270 review much better than the Thrive. That said, the Thrive being sold by EB is 3G + 32gb, whereas the Excite is only 16gb + wifi-only. A closer match would be the Samsung 7.7 EB are also purporting to sell, however I think the comparison would have this more favourable for processor (Tegra 3 quad core vs dual core)

    • Just remember, this model is now discontinued (from what I read) so don't expect much in terms of updates to the OS. I know what it is like, being the owner of an older model tablet that got quickly superceded what it is like to not get the updates when everyone else gets them, or to not even get the update! It is very annoying in my opinion!

    • sorry I meant the 'samsung' 7.7

      • Samsung 7.7 was the tablet I planning to buy. Was waiting for it to drop under $300. The Toshiba came down first, was only interested in the 7.7".

After researching both closely theres not much that separates the two, a few minor things.

Both apparently have the same screen, so top notch quality there.

        Main differences are:

        Toshiba Excite 7.7
        Quad Core
ICS out of the box. locked bootloader, No ROMS availble.
Can't charge via MicroUSB extra charge cable is $49.95
HDMI requires dock can only buy from Toshiba $100
Accessories are pretty much non exsistent

        Samsung 7.7
        Dual Core
Honeycomb 3.2 out of the box, not sure about official ICS update. But root and ROMS are avialble
        Can charge via MicroUSB
HDMI requires adapter available all over the place approx $65
Accessories availbility including 3rd party is plentiful

I did contemplate swapping to the Galaxy 7.7, however I think that the Toshiba has a very slight edge. The quality of the hardware and build itself is suppose to be excellent. Not happy about the extra $150 for the dock and extra charge cable, but I think Ill put buying those on hold for a while.

        • Official ICS is now available on Samsung 7.7
