I love these. Best headphones I ever owned. Until some c*** stole them out of my bag on a highway bus between Fukuoka and Miyazaki.Who says there's no crime in Japan.

    • +15

Funny, I also lost a pair of these in Japan. Left them at a hotel and went back there a few hours after checkout to see if they'd been located. No luck. Staff member must have nicked them.

Theft in Japan must be targeted specifically at Sennheiser HD25s.

    • +1

      Best headphones I ever owned.

      I have a pair of these, but HD25-II .
I've had them for >15 years, and they're built so, so well.

Wire & pin connectors are replaceable.
      Foam pads are replaceable.

Just good design, with 8 out of 10 sound quality.

    • Yeah I had a pair, left em and my bag with other stuff including car key in a taxi. The scummy cnts never found it of course.

They are good for isolating and popular go to DJ headphones, but the clamping force is fairly high for comfortable extended listening. Sony XM4/5 would be a better choice for most people on the go (with ANC).
Sound is good albeit a bit robotic. Still wish I had some.

      • Was the Taxi in Japan?

        • No, Aus, so the pricks took it obviously

          • +1

            @G-rig: that figures.

I left a iphone with a $500 rail card in a shop and when I went back few hours later, the shopkeeper ran to the counter and got it for me. Welcome to Japan.

Bought a pair for djing from Chemical Records UK around 2001, they survived approx 2 decades of being used in clubs and bars and thrown around in a bag. I still have them!

    • +2

Bought a pair for djing from Chemical Records UK

I got mine from them too !

The exchange rate back then, would have been brutal.

    • Chemical Records? Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Used to buy heaps of vinyl from them back in the day too.

  • -7

Professional in what way? Do you use them to listen to bitching customers at work? How come your work doesnt supply some?

    • +3

Very popular among DJs due to the excellent sound and build quality. You can also easily replace the ear pads and cable.

      • +1

Yeah they can go to extremely high volume and are crystal clear while doing it. I didn't get on with how they sit on top of the rear and clamp on tightly. I found them a bit wobbly when using them on one ear. But the sound is amazing. Cord was a bit on the short side.

      • +1

The key feature is their insane noise isolation, for passive headphones. They were originally for broadcast use in noisy environments. You can get them with a boom microphone.

        • -1

The noise isolation really isn't that great- they're on-ear headphones so they don't really block out that much noise. I bought them partially for flights… not really that effective.

ANC tech has made them obsolete for noise suppression. And circumaural closed backs would work better as well.

Perhaps there are some remaining niche applications, but for general use I couldn't recommend these headphones for people casually listening to music.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: The noise isolation is absolutely best in class, for their form factor. Black freaking magic, in fact. I still don't know how they got such a result with such a light weight.

            Yes, ANC is better.

Yes, they are not good for casual listening. They are too trebly, made to cut through remaining background noise.

These were literally made as studio headphones, first for camera operators, then they became the signature commentator headphone when sennheiser added a noise rejecting boom mic to them.

They are now out-dated, with the HD26 replacing them.

The Club DJ's found them and ate them up because they are very hard wearing, cut out the club sound and let you focus on the mix like nothing else, assisted by the piercing treble.

      • +1

You often see people using them in broadcast media also

    • I use them for monitoring audio while doing video work. Yes, work supplies shitty ones which will do the job, but some of us prefer to buy nicer ones out of preference as they do get quite a bit of use.

      • That was their original design purpose. Live however. For production they are not accurate, very treble heavy.

    • wow B-man looks as thick and confused in that photo..

  • +1

Fantastic headphones. Excellent sound and build quality. They'll last a lifetime.

  • Had a pair of these and worked as a DJ for about 10 years they are unbreakable.

  • +1

The one ear swing away is a fantastic feature.

  • +1

Can confirm, these are magnificent. Great price for them too. Super robust, comfortable & sound beautiful.

  • +1

I got 5 pairs of headphones including the Sennheiser M4s and soundcore q30s. Question, should I buy these headphones to add to my collection??

    • Absolutely. If you don't like them you can probably sell them on Marketplace for basically what you paid.

      • Do you think these headphones are worth it? I don't really need them though.

        • I think they're worth it, this will be my third pair as I like their sound signature, it works well with what I listen to. Fairly V shaped sound, with a fairly crisp and intense sound which I like for electronic music and rock/metal. If you're in to modifying stuff there are some nicer aftermarket cables and different ear pads available too.

          • +1

            @tooch83: Yeah no mids lol
First pair meant to last forever..

            • +1

@G-rig: My first pair I sold as I wasn't using headphones much. Always regretted selling them so bought another pair a few years later. I still have them. Never had a single issue with either pair.
Then just the other day I bought some on Amazon for the above price as I want another pair to use daily at work.

              • @tooch83: That's fair, they are solid units and don't look like a spaceman with them on, which is the attraction as they sit on the ears (supra-aural). Not as comfy but not as huge and isolate very well. I wouldn't mind some, Still got some Beyer DT250 I never use but use XM5's at work.

                @brenster56

Do you think these headphones are worth it? I don't really need them though.

That's not the Ozbargain spirit, most stuff on here we don't need haha. Do it!

    • Only if you need unbreakable, decent-sounding wired headphones that are still fairly portable. They sound okay, but if you want much better sound quality get something wired and open backed.

I have the HD 25 IIs- they are good if the kids need to use headphones in school. Portable, no need to rely on Bluetooth pairing under classroom conditions.

If I'm travelling/commuting, I'll use Bluetooth. If I'm at home, I'll use something wired but a lot better sounding.

    • The M4s probably have better sound when connected via AptX HD or AAC.

What are the other 3 headphones? Might be able to give you something to shoot for in a higher price tier or that better compliments your collection.

      • Sure, I have the 1More Sonoflow wireless headphones, Sony XM4s and the Sennheiser HD 450BT headphones. What would you do if you were me??

        • +1

Sell/gift/return the HD 450BT, the 1More, and the Q30s. Keep the XM4s if you need that level of noise cancelling, but otherwise the Momentum 4 is the one closed back portable to rule them all.

Invest your money in an open back for home if that works for you, I'd probably be looking at the Sennheiser HD 6XX or the Hifiman Ananda Nano, but both will you need to get a decent dongle at least to start.

If you're more interested in portable options, maybe invest in some upcoming TWS IEMs (most people call the earbuds), but wait for xMEMS Cypress driver designs, most models of which should start appearing next year. Combine that with aptX Lossless or LC3Plus for some pretty incredible audio quality and ANC.

  • +1

These aren't as robust as people seem to think. I went through 4 pairs in about 5 years. The contacts between the cups and the wire can be very finicky. I had the same problem on every pair i owned.

    • I have this pair and have this same problem! Very irritating. What's a fix you suggest?

      • +1

I bought a replacement driver and cable. Sorted it out but yeah. Very common problem.

  • +2

Nice cans. Prefer the straight cable over the telephone curly ones.

  • +1

Most equal sounding headphones a man can buy.
20 years. All I've had to do was replaced the interlink cable at $30.
Due to some drunken nights behind the decks
    ……

    Unbreakable

    • They arent. They are treble heavy and quite deliberately, to cut through noisy environs. They do have a clean sound, signature sennheiser, but they arent "accurate" at all.

Loved mine, but they have a purpose. Best in class at it. Accuracy isnt it.

  • Had mine for 15 years and use them almost every day. Only replaced the earpads. Amazing. Also straight cable is way better.

My only wish is for both sides to bend above the can rather than the left side only.

  • If you don't need the durability of the original designs, the HD 25 Light v2 is regularly $110-$130 and has the same sound.

  • +1

A lot of pro dj's still use these "cheap" headphones for a reason. They are solid and parts are readily available.

I've never seen them under $250…

    • Dafunk?

The standard model is regularly available for sub-$200.. πŸ˜… It was just under $200 again when I finally pulled the pin on an FLX4 couple months back.. πŸ˜… i kinda want the HD26 Pros now though.. 🀣

  • +1

amazing price on these. Bought these in April and just claimed price protection (old Lat CC offer) for that sweet cashback.

  • How do these sound compared to another ozb fav the hd 599?

    • +1

599's a little better (fractionally). 25's lighter though and on ear.

    • +2

They are a completely different type of headphone. 599's are open back. These are closed.

    • Agree totally different and different use cases.

  • +1

    HD280 pro might suit others….

    • What are the major differences?

      I'm looking at the HD26 Pro's.. πŸ˜…

  • +1

I want these so bad and absolutely don't need them. I have Beyerdynamic T90s, I prefer over ear and open style as I need to hear the outside world and prefer the sound of that. I have absolutely no use for these. Yeah I still want them :(

  • +1

What a great price! I am still rocking mine that I purchased back in 2008.

  • +1

I oversee various commercial video editing suites. These cans are our go-to in every suite. They're comfortable, sound good, great passive background noise reduction, and every part of them is replaceable with easy available parts. Can't go wrong at this price.

  • +1

Perfect! My partner just got into DJing and she needs a new pair instead of using my old Audio Technicas.

  • +1

Who'd have thought we have so many DJs here at OzB?

Geez… playing music for a living. What times we live in.

  • +1

Anyone had experience with using them with a Microphone as well?
I understand theres some sort of mic attachment?
Is the attachment easy to get etc?
    Thanks

  • +1

5% off if you purchase 2 pairs (given they apparently last forever you may need to find a friend).

    • +1

Inflation update after 1 and quarter days (your post).

It's now up to $193.87 and you need 2 friends to get 10%.. πŸ˜ͺ

      • +1

Still cheap, most people including me were happily paying $249 in 2008 etc

        • Yeah, in 2008.. πŸ˜… But I've been keeping an eye for the last few months and the base HD25 can be had from various major retailers for under $200. Problem is it seems it's only the base model that goes on special.. πŸ˜ͺ

          • @WasBargain: Back in the days of headphonic and the forums ;P

            Worth getting the pro
            Yep yep

            • +1

@G-rig: Wooaaahhhh, I only vaguely remember Headphonic now.. πŸ˜ͺ I was still in highschool. I think 08' (maybe 07') was the year I saved like $200+ for my first "audophile" cans, the HD595's.. πŸ˜†

              I'm actually tempted by the HD26 Pro's.. πŸ˜…

  • mm is it just me or what? when I add the item into my shopping cart and gets to the delivery part it always says "Sorry, this item can't be shipped to your selected address. Learn more. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order." anyone having the same problem ?

    • I didn't have that problem, and mine arrived during the week.
Have you got your location set to Australia? I think it changes sometimes if you browse items on other countries' Amazon sites.

      • yea it is set to australia.

      • I think I may have found the reason why, however I can not create a new address that way.
Do you know if your delivery address has "Suburb" entered?

        • Yes my suburb is entered under the 'CITY/SUBURB' field

          • @tooch83: mm weird, I have an old address w/o the suburb, and that kinda tricks amazon, but as soon as I switch to an address that has my suburb then it doesn't work anymore sad.
