Not as good as the equivalent woolies deal over the last couple of weeks. Mince is probably the best value.

  • Whats the difference between Scotch Fillet, Porterhouse and Pepper steaks?

I rarely see restaurants offer pepper steaks. Are they really that bad to eat?

    • Quality of the cut of beef. Scotch being the most tender when pan fried, followed by porterhouse followed by pepper steaks. The peppered steaks are just acceptable pan fried but if you over cook them they'll be super tough. I find porterhouse to be very acceptable cooked medium rare. You can get porterhouse cheaper by buying in larger quantities, but these sealed packs often have a long expiry date on them, so can be quite a good deal if you want to have a range of dinner options on hand in the fridge. Good for single people or couples who don't need/want to buy in bulk also.

what about that flank steak or one with the ridge down the middle… is it any good?

      • Thanks thats good to know.

What about Oyster blade and rump steaks?? They look very similar to porterhouse without the big side fat.

Which cut would you recommend if you're hosting a dinner? Will you get laughed at if you offer Oyster blade, peppersteak or flank steak?

        • Oyster and rump are good only if you're slow cooking or pressure cooking. They will be tender.

Get yourself an InstantPot. Best investment!!

          • @CTFlashZ: Decently aged well marbled rump is fine for pan frying.

          • @CTFlashZ: not necessarily, i think rump is better as a steak, although you can slow cook it , the pieces that arent near the fat always come out a little chalky compared to something like chuck steak, good quality rump is amazing as a steak and will melt in your mouth, that being said though, i still prefer scotch fillet and sirloin

            • @Qazxswec: Rump is too inconsistent in my experience. One day it's amazing the next it's awful.

              • @DevGuy: yeah it can be, i usually get the better quality stuff through my work at a good price, as for woolies and coles, if i buy there, i stick to scotch and sirloin, the green individually cryovacced packs from woolies and the coles finest individually cryovacced at coles are my picks

Pepper steak or rump would be okay for a BBQ. I'd go porterhouse if hosting a dinner and pan frying. If you can afford it I'd do eye fillet if I was entertaining in a dinner party type situation.

As a general rule though, don't invite dinner guests over if they are the type of people who are going to laugh at what you cook them, unless you serve them cheezels for dinner or something (some people would rate this too) friends should appreciate your hospitality.

    • Depends on how developed the muscle is…. Tenderloin being the best, scotch/sirloin mid and rump lower.
So many other factors that impact the quality though…and that's before you get to how they're cooked.

These supermarket pepper steaks are consistently good…no idea what cut they use.

  • Beef Brisket Schnitzel $18.75/kg

Anyone got feedback on these? Looks ok…

    • +1

I haven't tried them, but they are only 50% beef (fairly normal for a schnitzel). Might be okay as a convenience meal option, easy prep.

I am a big fan of the tegal take out chicken crumbed patties, air fry really good , easy for a quick meal when i cant be stuffed.
        Will give these a go.

        my usual go to is:

bread roll, double patty, garlic mayo, lettuce, tomato
washed down with ice cold solo or wimmers double sarsparilla

        oh boy

Vaguely resembles the texture of meat..not sure if it's reformed or over machine tenderised. $18.75kg not great value for the amount of crumb mixture coating.

    Aldi steaks are cheaper.

    • +5

I love Aldi and I shop there for my main shop… but this isn't it. Aldi steak is only good if you enjoy chewing leather.

      • Not my experience. Try their scotch 4 pack. It may surprise you. I always got coles but tried aldi and was happy.

        • I don't think they have scotch fillet for <$35/kg do they?

          • @Jayblesz: I think the 4 packs are about $30 a kilo, but they may have gone up since I last looked.

        • Agree. The 4 packs of scotch fillets are great if you pick out the best ones. Some of them have no fat through them though.

    • +2

Won't go back to aldi/coles/woolworths steaks after getting the grass-fed Porterhouses at Farmer Jacks. Worth paying the extra ~5 bucks a kilo.

        Perth only?

        • +1

Apparently, I thought they were nationwide for some reason

  • A true OzBargainer knows when the meat markdowns happen. :D

    mine mine mine mine

    • +2

i like to believe true ozbargainer got boys on the inside who put away the good stuff lol

  • their peppered steak are tough as old shoe leather. I do like their rump medallions though. They are good when you can get them for $10 a pack

  • Do you have to order them online?

    • +1

I think so, I've just noticed this and updated.

  • How much saving compare to buying individually? guessing not so much.

    • +2

      About 25%, $6/pack rather than $8.

Can be worthwhile if stacking with points and if you were going to buy these products anyway.

Mince works our cheaper than lower grade mince, so a good deal I think. Especially when you can use mince for bulk meals that can be frozen.

  • Hey, although the pepper steak and other options look pretty good

The scotch fillet 170g 5 for 5 wouldnt be a good deal. or in general the scotch fillet price isnt as good as the standard
"drovers choice - Scotch Fillet" which is $29/kg

    5 x 170gs only = .85kg for 30 $ …

    • +1

I think it depends on how many people you’re cooking for. Drovers choice is cheaper per kilo but your minimum spend to acquire it is $24.65 which might be a couples meat budget for a week almost totally allocated in steak. With this deal they could get 1kg of mince, two scotch fillets and a schnitzel or pepper steak pack for $30, which whilst red meat heavy could see them through the week with variety. The individual steaks are also great for single people and often come with a long fridge life (only problem with online only is not being able to select ones with the longest dates). A couple could also split one scotch fillet if having it marinated, seared and sliced and served with veggies and rice. Or sometimes we do Mexican seasoning chop it after cooking and put it in burritos or tacos with beans and salad (you don’t need a large quantity of meat to make a meal). Personally I’m not a scotch fillet fan anyway, but if someone likes it and is cooking for 1-2 this could still be a deal for someone.

  • I personally buy cube rolls on special, then cut them up and vacuum seal it myself, works out cheaper than this deal. But good deal regardless!
