Customs Tax/Duties on International Shipped Items?

Just checking, as I'm dealing with a US distributor to get some parts to fix an old amplifier. They're giving me some spiel that I'll have to pay taxes my end that's throwing me, but I'm hoping is just some copy/paste spiel.

Haven't really ordered anything major from overseas online since the customs tax law changes, but my understanding was it only comes into effect for items > $1000 AUD? and doesn't include shipping/ins costs etc

I need to order a couple replacement speakers to repair an old amplifier setup, basically will come to ~$900AUD plus like $250 shipping, just checking, I'm not gonna get slugged with some holdup at customs and paying extra?

Otherwise I might consider the extra cost, wait & hassle of dealing with the inept local distributor, so I at least get some kinda local warranty considering I'm already in an out-of-warranty expense problem.

inept or not, how much is the local distributor asking? Is it within 10% of the US shipped price?
That kind of money I'd strongly consider going local just for peace of mind.

If you get taxed, it will be for the total price including shipping. $1150 in your example.
If you use USPS or another postal service that relies on Auspost, you will be unlikely to be taxed, as they routinely don't collect on items valued under $1000.
If you use a courier like UPS, DHL, FEDEX or the others, they will collect the tax on the full amount, shipping included, and will usually also add a admin charge. Couriers do not apply a $1000 cutoff.

    • This!

Tax includes shipping charges and based on your values I would just assume you’re going to be charged tax. There may be ways around it but when doing your sums just assume you’ll be taxed so you don’t have any surprises

If your supplier didn't collect tax from their end and your order value excluding shipping is less than $1000 AUD, you should not get any import tax.

  • What speakers?

  • Can confirm anything over 1000 will incur duties and taxes. It would depend on what company the shipper goes with and if its declared properly.
