Suggestion for Hybrid Bike for Use on Paved/ Gravel Road, Footpath and Loose Gravel Bike Trails, on and off Road

Hi All,

I am here looking for suggestions for bikes. I will be using mostly on Paved/ Gravel Road/ trails. Looking for a reasonable suspension, brakes, gears, shifters. I am completely new to this so please suggest me what to look at and which bike would you suggest.

I was looking for some mountain bike but saw few posts here and i dont know if a hybrid bike is more suitable in my context or a hardtail bike is better. Can I Please request you all for your suggestion and link for bikes, bike shop online. Do you think it is better to look in stores like 99 bikes or would you recommend a local independent bike shop or shop like Giant or Trek (But these 2 shop are probably expensive so i dont know better to look at independent bike shop and see if they have any second hand bike)

Could I please request you to send me a direct message with the links from Facebook marketplace or gum tree if you have seen any second hand bike that could be suitable for me. I really appreciate your help, suggestion. Thank you so much.

Looking to buy 2 bikes so I think if we can find something better value and reasonable budget is about $700 each so $1400 - $1500 in total. If we can find something around this range that would be great. Please give us you own suggestion, advice as well. Thank you ALL!

I am 165cm tall and weight around 70kg not sure what kind of wheel size or frame is suitable.I am in Sydney. Please suggest on this as well. Thank you

Why am I being asked this?

You posted the same thing almost a year ago, and this post makes just as little sense as the first time around

I will be using mostly on Paved/ Gravel Road, Footpath and Loose Gravel Bike Trails, on and off Road and sometimes a beginner wilderness, natural trails

You've named almost every style of riding, you're asking for Facebook/Gumtree links without even specifying which part of the country you're in.

You need to walk into a bike store and get someone to explain this all to you then buy something and ride it, as you're not getting anywhere online.

You seem like you have more experience, knowledge so that is why i am asking you. the terrain would mostly be Paved/ Gravel Road/ trials . I am in Sydney if anyone have seen on Fb marketplace or gumtree i kindly request you to send me a link. I dont know if a hybrid bike is better or a hardtrail bike. Just trying to narrow down the search. Thank you.

You need to talk to someone in a bike shop- you can see how this thread has turned into a shambles. Ask someone knowledgeable in person.

Or buy anything and just start riding, instead of waiting another year and asking the same question again.

Go to stores and seek their recommendations (model/frame size), and then dont look at bike shops for second hand bikes, go on Gumtree/Facebook marketplace

If you don't know what you are doing and incapable of assessing the condition of a bike then buying new is probably better. To give a bike a service, replace the cassette and chain, brakes, possibly tyres, maybe a few others things, could easily be $200-300, possibly negating any savings.

mostly on Paved/ Gravel Road, Footpath and Loose Gravel Bike Trails, on and off Road and sometimes a beginner wilderness, natural trails.

You've just listed every sort of terrain possible. You really need to decide if you want suspension and chunky tyres of a mountain bike, or the efficiency and speed of a hybrid.

If you are doing long rides on constructed paths then mountain bike will get very tiring.

    • mostly on Paved/ Gravel Road/trails . I don't know if a hybrid bike is more fitted for it or a hardtrail bike. Just trying to narrow down search.

I love the completely random capitalision.

What is "trail"? It could be anything from concrete through the city to single track in a state forest.

Unless you're riding on actual dirt (not gravel) then suspension will just slow you down. Riding a mountain bike around town is for children and fitness addicts.

        • :D capitalising makes it easier to separate it out. Will visit bike shop and get suggestion from them. Thank you.

Bike for Use on Paved/ Gravel Road, Footpath and Loose Gravel Bike Trails, on and off Road

The Super-Cool 4 is what you are looking for…

      ngl.. thats cool as hell

      • It is super cool…

    You left out time trails

  • Get a Giant Roam. If you ride mostly on paved surfaces swap the tyres for something narrower, maybe 28 inch/700 and lock the suspension. If you are mostly offroad, stick with fatter tyres and unlock the suspension.

Would you guys have any suggestion on any independent bike shop or if you been to any independent bike shop in or around Hills Shire Council? Thank you

    • +4

No, sorry. The only ones I can think of are dependent

    • +1

The 'trek' or 'giant' stores are almost independent. They are pretty much just bike shops that have a branding attached. Run by locals, but focussed on one brand. Other independents will have range of brands, but often the range will be from a single distributor, so a different range to their competition. Its a while since i bought a new bike, but youll find that there will be specific combinations of brands in shops, and thats for a reason.

You dont need suspension, you need some decent width tyres. 30-40mm. Cheap suspension doesnt do much other than adding weight. Good suspension only appears on $1500 mountain bikes.

Unless you plan to actively pursue mountain bike trails, not just fire roads and gravel paths, a hybrid will serve you fine. When i first started decent off road mountain biking my MTB was the equivalent of a modern hybrid. Something like a Giant Roam as above will be a good option. 700c wheels, good mixed use tyres. Comfort geometry. Other brands will have an equivalent. If you go into a shop tell them what else youre looking at and theyll find an equivalent.

  • My ex bought a hybrid and it did nothing well and wasn't pleasant to ride.

Get a Giant Talon 1. They can be had for $900 if u shop around.

      and it did nothing well

I think he had silly expectations if he thought something literally labelled "hybrid" would excel in a particular area. Thats the point of them. They dont.

      • I think he had silly expectations

        She.

There wasn't an expectation that it would excel in any areas. There was an expectation it would be a competent all-rounder on bitumen & gravel roads. It was less than competent. In todays $$ it was a $1k bike. Not huge money but not the cheapest available.

        • +1

          What bike was it?

          • @Euphemistic: an Apollo when they made decent bikes

            • +1

@brad1-8tsi: They did make decent bikes. Ive had a couple. There wasnt really anything wrong with them, just turned them over when something better or more interesting came along.

Throw panniers on it and a hybrid would excel as a work commuter or a bike to take down to the shops.

    • +2

If you arent riding MTB trails a Talon will feel slow and heavy. Good bike, just not built for pavement riding.

Finding a hybrid 'poor' depends on what variation of hybrid you get. I rode a Giant Roam a few times. Would have been a perfectly fine bike for gravel trail riding, or pootling along the sharepath with the kids. TBH it was probably a better MTB than the one i bought to start 'real' mountain biking last century.

I bought as a parts bike as it had a damaged frame then used all but the frame fork and tyres to build a fast flat bar commuter bike with disc brakes.

Wouldn't touch a kmart hybrid with a barge pole.

      • Giant Roam is a nice bike but more expensive than a Talon.

My Mrs rides a Talon E+1 to a few of her jobs around Sydney. She does about 60km a week and loves it. We also do gravel roads and a little bit of rougher stuff. It's a good all-rounder and well specced for the price.

If the OP goes to Giant Melbourne or Brisbane websites & clicks on the 2022 models there are some good buys there under $1k apart from the Talon,. Liv Alight, fastroads, Roam, etc

  • Thanks Everyone!

  • what do you think Entry level Gravel Bike or Hardtail Mountain Bike. It seems Gravel Bike will be more suitable but usually more expensive. Anyone have idea on Budget Gravel bike i saw good reviews for Triban GRVL 120 but its almost 1200 it has MICROSHIFT H100 10-speed 11-40 cassette. is it good enough. Thank you

FFS just go to a bike shop and talk to a human being in realtime and they can show you stuff. Or borrow literally any bike from a friend and start riding it around, instead of asking the internet.

      Budget Gravel bike

Drop bars on a road-derived frame will totally kick your ass if you're not used to riding already. And put you off the sport forever.

It's also totally different from what you started out at:

Looking for a reasonable suspension, brakes, gears, shifters. I am completely new to this so please suggest me what to look at and which bike would you suggest.

      • Yes will go to human being in a bike shop, real time suggestion. Thanks Everyone for suggestion.

Totally agree. Gravel bikes are trendy, but they definitely are not for noobs.

Triban sounds like a home brand bike. Wont be any good - unless you are a well experienced rider AND bike mechanic.
