Opticomm - CVC? Best Value RSP's or Are They All The Same?

is selection of RSP on Opticomm network as important as NBN regrading CVC bandwidth

experiencing issues with Swoop, thinking might be case you get what you pay for however heard December 2023 they removed this or was that only for >100megabit plans

Not sure what state you're in but in SA there was only a couple of RSP's available for an estate I was renting in for a while, Exetel and Superloop were the 2 that I could find. Superloop appeared to be just on-selling Exetel services as when I churned the IP address for my Superloop service was still showing up as being owned by Exetel.

Strangely, when I first moved in I went with Exetel and paid for 100mbps and was only getting around 50mbps. I churned to Superloop 6 months later and my speeds instantly went up to 100mbps. When I churned back to Exetel they also got up to 100mbps.

    • No idea why people think Superloop are reselling Exetel when Superloop bought Exetel during last year.

Have a look at Leaptel https://members.leaptel.com.au/metrics/opticomm-cvc (if link doesn't work just google it…its blocked at work) I signed up with them no issues so far, Launtel is also the other recommended one

I imagine the ISP will still be responsible for transit once the data hits their network. Ie, I doubt Opticomm is maintaining an entire ISP level network and just on-selling through other companies. CVC may not be a thing, but the quality of your ISP's network is still going to play into it.

Have had a good experience with both Aussie Broadband and Leaptel. Other well-known ones are Launtel, Exetel and Superloop.
Personally I had lower evening speeds with Superloop recently so I switched to Leaptel but YMMV.

  • thanks everyone

initially was thinking Aussie Broadband who seem to charge $109 activation fee but the other companies don't so guess we're free to switch between those

the issues specifically with video calls at random points of the day

i'm helping someone remotely who so far hasn't remembered to do a speed test when issues arise

they are paying $70 for 25/20 and when working well was 27.75/18.61 with 8ms ping (69ms down / 118ms up)

if activation fee isn't a thing, i'll get them to switch plans every 6 months for the promo price and settle on whatever offers best value performance for the long run

I have been with Exetel and I am currently with Uniti. The two are not the same. Exetel was superior in every way. Despite Uniti owning Opticomm, my average download speeds are 238 on a 250 plan, whereas Exetel was consistently about 272 on a 250 plan. Exetel was also cheaper. Why Exetel was faster on exactly the same infrastructure is a mystery.

Also, with Opticomm, you will most likely be double NATed, once on your router and again back at the communications cupboard in your building. This means that you will need to pay for a static IP address if you wish to run things like a Plex server with remote access. Uniti charge $10pm for this whereas Exetel only charges $5
