Help My Elderly Neighbour Watch The V8 Supercars

My neighbour is elderly, isn't tech savvy therefore I am assisting with looking at options for him to cost effectively watch the V8 Super Cars (AU). Naturally I head over here to see what might be the best options.

He doesn't have internet, but I could look at sharing my connection with him (that's another subject is what options I might have for extending but not losing quality?!).

I understand the options are:
1. Limited free to air (via old-school aerial), I don't believe all the races that he wants to watch are available as this is what he is watching currently.
2. Does connecting his TV to an internet source (likely mine) give him more free-to-air-over-internet availability for V8s?
3. Foxtel ($60 per month for sport + $350 satelite installation is required or an internet connection).
4. Foxtel now (essentials $54 ($25 + sport $29) + required internet connection)
5. Kayo (Kayo One at $25 per month) + internet connection
6. Sky Sport - assuming this is what pubs and club broadcast and not available for residential ? I couldn't easily see my options here.

Anything I have missed?

If I were my neighbour I would go with option 5 with my help of internet connection. Is there anything better priced?

I feel for this guy as he doesn't own a mobile, email address or car (totally envious really!).

Thanks in advance guys

  • Does he have money? Why not help him get internet connected.

    • Sure adding internet is an option but if he isn't happy with the streaming service via my connection that I can loan him, or otherwise, there is no point. He has no other smarts to use the connection

Happy to look at getting him the internet if he has a demand for it, currently there isn't a demand…yet

Well maybe he could do with an Apple TV box or something, get him into the 21st century. He at home all day yeah?

        • Not legal or against the ISP’s T&C’s?

          • -7

            @Dollar General:

            Not legal

            correct…

            • +1

@jv: This is false. Breaking the T&C from your ISP is not a criminal offence. It may make you liable for a civil action (lawsuit) but there are no laws against breaking a contract.

There ARE laws specifically against using somebody else's internet connection without permission, but that's not relevant to this situation.

              • @klaw81: jv didn't say criminal offence, they clearly said not legal, which may be true. Illegal and criminal are not the same thing.

I highly doubt any ISP is going to know who is using their service.

                • @Loopholio:

                  jv didn't say criminal offence

Scroll further down. He claims that such a breach could lead to a "criminal record."

It's not "illegal" to breach an ISP's terms and conditions either.

                  • @klaw81: I saw that after commenting. Yeah, I have no idea what jv is going on about there.

    • V8 supercars not on free to air anymore?

      • apparently not all races, according to the no-so-tech-savvy neighbour

        • +1

Highlights packages mostly on at midnight.
Some weekends on the other hand are 6 hour telecast with qualifying plus some support category races.
Seven and or mate also show support category races midweek
          .

      • Not all races, Kayo Sports is the easiest way to get them all.

  • +7

V8 supercars, and F1 and MotoGP bikes don't want people like him. Or me, for that matter, no matter how interested we are in these motor sports. They only want people who will sign up to a subscription to a streaming service that will pay the owners of the sport a big fee for the rights to stream it. In a few years they'll be wondering why advertisers aren't interested in putting money into the sport, and it'll be because there'll be so few eyes looking at the screen showing it.

Tell your neighbor V8 Supercars in the current form of Mustangs and Camaros - which are already out of production - is already on borrowed time, running on the momentum it built up when it was Australian Falcons and Commodores. There's no point in him getting enthusiastic about it. They can't figure out what fomula to replace that with that will get the public interest back. They'll shut it down and replace American cars racing in Australia with American cars racing in the US.

    • Thanks for your insight - it's appreciated and quite likely his opinion already!

He thinks he has missed the boat with technology but I've already mentioned to him that I'm oh-so-jealous of his ignorance! He lives the simple life for sure, and well done to him

    • Some people have been predicting the demise of V8 Supercars for years now but it remains a popular sports category and the fact that the Camaro isn’t made any more doesn't seem to have hurt its popularity as yet.

      • about time they went with V8 version of aussie racing cars, modern underneath 70s/80s on top
        .

    • Introduce them to GT3 racing for cool fast tin-tops or the Trans Am series if they like old school V8s … or even the TCR series…

Nice Trans Am action in this clip from the mountain.. https://www.facebook.com/reel/537724785435282

    • As the neighbour is elderly who knows which will last longer.

    1. Get a Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K - usually about $79. His TV might have the Kayo app, but it's unlikely due to his lack on internet connectivity.
    2. Connect it to your Wi-Fi. - to see if your Wi-Fi will reach his address, bring your mobile phone over and try to connect to it.
    3. Subscribe to Kayo - $25 a month

Yep sweet - this is basically the options I thought. I believe he has a smart tv (surprisingly!).
My wifi doesn't quite reach - it's close. Therefore my next steps are to look at how I can extend the range of my connection without losing quality
      Mega thanks for the reply

      • +1

Thanks mate - your point is clear

          • +5

@jv: Ha ha. Criminal record for sharing your internet with a neighbour? Youre kidding right?

Noone is going to gaol for paying for a legal internet connection but allowing a neighbour access to it. At the worst they be fined and get banned from the service they are signed up with.

          • +2

@jv: WATCH OUT EVERYONE THE SHERIFF HAS SPOKEN LMAO

          • +1

@jv: Possibly breaching a contract seems to possibly be a civil law matter, and not a criminal law. Hence, I don't see any crime or breach of law?

    • The cheapskate option would be as above but watching the highlights on 7plus instead of Kayo.

Or, if his Smart TV accepts an external hdd, the midnight highlights could be recorded on that (no need to worry about Internet).

Just depends on whether he wants to watch qualifying and the full races or is happy with the highlights.

  • This would require a little bit more effort to set up. A combination of sharing your internet, using a VPN, then connecting his smart TV (or chromecast) to that to use SuperView.

    https://www.supercars.com/superview

    • Interesting! This is all he needs but wow why is this option not available to Australians!
      Thanks for this.

      • It's not available to Australians because Foxtel (Kayo), and to a lesser degree Channel 7, have paid Supercars for the exclusive TV and streaming rights within Australia. Selling TV rights is a significant part of how Suprecars makes their money to host the events (venue hire, street circuit setup etc..), provide logistics, pay fees to Motor Sport Australia for compliance, pay for marshal, and pay prize money to the teams.

Rights to markets overseas are less in demand, hence they can sell the Superview package for much cheaper than Foxtel/Kayo resells their packages.

        • Thanks for the insight, top explainer here. Naked sense.
          Appreciated 🙏

  • +3

Invite him over and watch it with him?

    • +2

haha nice one. I have about as much interest in cars as he does tech!

    • +2

That's exactly what I was thinking.
And in process - get to know your neighbour abit more!

  • +5

nothing extra to input but you're a great neighbour!

    • Aww thanks a bunch. He's a good person - what goes around comes around

    • +3

This is the third comment now, you are one committed troll btw

      • +1

hahaha he's made his point I guess

    • Not legal, but sharing netflix accounts is also frowned upon and everyone does that. Hardly the crime of the century to share your wifi with your neighbour.

      • It's against the terms and conditions, but breaching those is a civil matter, not a criminal offence.

    • Your own linked article indicates that using a neighbor's internet connection without permission might be illegal, but deliberately sharing that same network is only a breach of the ISP's terms and conditions - which is a civil matter, not a criminal one.

  • He could just watch the 2 litre touring cars which are fairly action packed. Read this, its on broadcast TV

Thanks ! I'll pass it on….by this I mean print and drop over there :D

  • Foxtel sports $60 per month is probably the easy one for him. Can easily negotiate free install.
Kayo + internet is an option, but many things can go wrong. Kayo interface is also rubbish as opposed the selecting a channel with foxtel remote.

    • +1

$60 per month? Youre kidding right? How can they possibly justify that?

    • Agree with this as an option.
He needs the least amount of steps and troubleshooting required!

      • 100% this for old

        also a nice juicy shopback/cashrewards for him/you?

    • Foxtel no longer do free installs for satellite.

  • A pvr. The highlights are broadcast later. You can set it up for him to record all in that series and any other car related shows he would be interested in.

    • This is a good idea, just not sure the highlights are enough for his expectations

  • -1

It's he going to watch it in the garage while sitting his car revving the engine?

    • OP mentioned that op elderly neighbour has no email no mobile no car. Op elderly neighbour 2FA incompatible. Don't have to worry about 3G shutdown and don't have a spare charger for visitors. On the plus side the elderly neighbour's kids never get to experience the teach your elders how to smartphone.

    • I think you've gone too far with your assumptions.

  • +3

Just wanted to say I appreciate that you are helping your elderly neighbour.
Sounds like something I enjoy doing!

    • +1

Aww thanks. He's a ripper dude that doesn't ask for anything, I'm just giving him a hand.
We take for granted our abilities and resources!

  • @Greenspark, thank you for helping your neighbour. Those of us with 'older' parents not living nearby appreciate you!

Instead of the chromecast, check out the Amazon Firestick. Has a lot of apps built in, and I have heard the chromecast isn't going to be getting much support in the future.

With regards to the comments about not 'sharing', how about 'I went to my friend Bill's place and we watched the V8s together'?

    • +1

Aww thanks. I appreciate this too…
      What goes around, comes around.

      Good tips, thank you.

Run a 50 meter Cat 5E Ethernet cable from your router to his house. $19. Easy and no issues with quality of connection.
