Aussie with NAB Citibank (Debit) Card in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Which ATM?

Apology first if this subject has already been discussed here, and also there are so much to read in here to get the specific information I want to know, so apologies again that I am just going to ask straight out (seem much simpler & quicker, ok?!).

3 days ago, I bought 2 tickets to Kuala Lumpur (KL) and then only just work out I need cash for almost everything (if you want to save money, of course).
Then I look into available ATMs in KL Airport and lo…. I don't know any of the banks except for HSBC, but then again I have never used my NAB card in a HSBC ATM locally (Melbourne) or overseas.

I guess the question here is.. Which ATM should I be using in KL…so that I would pay the least amount of fees?!

Thanks in advance.

  • Sounds like you came unprepared.

We’re in KL now, lots of places take card if no cash. The husband been using his Wise Card and we have also exchanged cash at the money changers. Highest rate we have gotten is AUD1 to RM2.91.

  • I hardly used cash in Kuala Lumpur. You can get by with grab and card for the most part. Generally any ATM won't charge a fee (it has never charged me one), and I just use the mastercard/visa exchange rate.

  • +1

Maybank was fee free earlier this year.

  • +1

Not all ATMs will work for your card, but I have previously used Maybank without any issues.

  • Nab, like macquarie, uses the mastercard rate. At this point in time,it's 1 aud = 2.95 myr

You can use any of the major banks. Id stay away from independent ones

  • When are you flying ?

I would recommend getting a Wise physical card.

So, if you're going to Malaysia, transfer AUD digitally into the Wise account,
which converts AUD to MYR at a great rate (normally the bank rate you see on Google).
    The fees are very reasonable.

I, too, have the ex-Citi Plus card (now with NAB),
but Wise card was used the most when overseas,
and I didn't need to even take out the NAB Citi Debit card.

  • What u talking about, Willis? I lived in KL for years until 2023 and hardly ever used cash. Cash is king for Najib, but for everyone else plastic is fine.

  • NAB debit card migrated from Citibank arrangement is still in place.

This ought to mean international fee free ATM withdrawals from ‘all’ ATMs. You might even find some ATMs which will waive their own fee (as part of the old arrangement still in place). Let us know which ones.

Cards of all types are accepted in KL. You only need a small amount of cash.

  • With the citibank to Nab migration . Nab didn't think that they need to advise their customer what overseas ATM they have partnership with . I don't think they realise that was feature that they required to address.

I had the exact same question a few weeks ago for another destination.

At least with Citibank (previously) , HSBC - you had that option where it would tell you the fee free atms. None of that is avaliable with Nab-Citibank Debit Card Migration

A Nab bank employee told me, he will be surprise if Nab-Citibank will be Fee- free for too long for international transaction .

    • NAB just sent out an email with a change to international fees for my ex-citibank account. No idea if it applies or not though since they didn't specify… Good job NAB.

      • Yes I'm wondering the same right now…i just transferred all my 28 degrees transactions to this card…
