Need an External Garage Door Lock

I had my automatic roller door serviced 4 years ago but it stopped working, again. I am very careful with it and only open it once or twice a week. I'm planning to forgo the regular costs of servicing/repairing a delicate and complex piece of machinery and use the manual overide instead.

I don't park inside my garage but do use it to store tools and materials.

My garage has an automatic roller door at the front and an older style manual roller door at the rear. Using the manual override on the front roller door I can lock it from the inside and leave the garage via the rear roller door (towards the backyard). Unfortunately I don't have a key for the rear roller door and so am unable to lock it. The locksmith has a callout fee and said that he cannot guarantee that it will be possible for him to make a key for the lock because it is an old/unconventional lock.

I was thinking to purchase a DIY lock if there is something I can install myself that might be able to attach to the external rear roller door and possibly something clamped/attached onto the concrete slab underneath it. Any ideas?

TIA

    About what?

Automatic roller doors don't die that fast, maybe time to replace them? I used few times a day for years without an issue.

    • Unlucky, I guess. It's probably about 15 - 20 years old. Our last roller door worked for 16 years without a hitch.

Something like this? Have used one as an extra security measure in a workplace. Just need a decent padlock to go with it - and knees thatll cope with getting down to ground level.

    • Perfect. This is exactly the kind of product I was looking for. Thanks. I have good padlocks and knees :)

A locksmith, lock supplier may have alternate versions.

From memory, we mounted 2 of these one inside and one outside and one way was a bit tricky as it was sorta designed for the alternate and didnt quite fit.

    • My last roller door had a lock that would open with anything stuck into it (overused rental). I was able to stick a padlock through a hole on the inside.

While the other half is at home take the existing lock and mechanism out of the manual roller door and take it to Bunnies and see if they have a replacement. You can also make a diagram of it with measurements and take some photos and then look at Bunnies web site to see if they have a replacement.

If all else fails take the key barrel out of the manual roller door and take it to a locksmith to get them to rekey it or make a new key. No callout, so it will be allot cheaper if they can do it.

I'd fix it. Opening and closing it with a remote is worth it.
