Xiaomi AX3000T Now Incompatible with OpenWRT

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, as the AX3000T deal was posted here a while ago- unfortunately the AX3000T is no longer compatible with OpenWRT as Xiaomi has made a silent hardware revision. I spent around ten hours trying to get it to work but if you have firmware version 10.84 or above consider yourself out of luck.

Darn hate that…. I'm sorry for your loss….

What's the next best router to use now?

Honestly, not sure, but for shits and giggles I bought an Orange Pi Zero 3 for 14 usd and a switch. I'm thinking of running Adguard on the Zero 3 (which is all I really wanted to do with OpenWRT anyway) because my current Eero 6 is good enough- and I ended up getting a partial refund on Ali so the AX3000t is now being used as a wireless repeater.

    • GL.iNet Flint 2, but it costs a fair bit at full price.

I was lucky enough to pick up mine used for $100 from the Campbelltown area.

It has a UI wrapper on top of OpenWRT for stupid people and you can also delve deeper for more advanced settings in OpenWRT if you want to.

Main downside is the price and no options for more advanced WiFi beyond 6.

  • just a minor tweak for openwrt support, might just have to wait a month or so for a new openwrt build

    • Most likely, but theres never any guarantees and I did want to warn any potential buyers who were expecting to follow a simple 15 minute process to get OpenWRT flashed.

  • The issues are, AFAIK, caused by a minor hardware revision change (different flash memory chip). So long as you can flash a downgraded (and vulnerable) 1.0.47 firmware, then the flash can work. Fix will likely make it into a release shortly, but in the meantime OpenWRT is working fine with Snapshot builds.

I bought one in the last month, and after some messing around and a few soft-brickings, got OpenWRT and the web interface working fine.

Pretty bare bones device, but wireless speed is good.

    • Are you sure we can downgrade the firmware from .84 to .47 ? Because I tried and it complained about not being able to downgrade.
