OZBARGAIN

Hey all,

The Big LAN has another event coming up, and we've heard a lot of feedback from people saying that it's hard for people to bring along their own gaming PCs to an event. We've got some different PCs available for rent at our events for those who want to just rock up and start playing.

It's our early bird period and we are offering an extra $10 off to OzBargain Users. This means that you can get a rental PC for the same price we usually charge for a standard BYO PC ticket.

We have three tiers of rental PCs, you'll also get an AOC gaming monitor (1080p 180Hz or 240Hz) to use:

Standard: i7 6700 + GTX 1650 or Equivalent
Deluxe: i7 8700 + RTX 2060 or Equivalent
Premium: R7 3700X + RTX 3060 or Equivalent

Just bring along your favourite mouse, keyboard and headset and you'll be set.

Date: October 5th, 2024
Location: Mitcham Baptist Church (8-12 Simla St, Mitcham) with free parking available
Time: 10AM - 10PM
Food: Fully catered at no extra cost.

I feel like a RTX 2060 should be bare minimum these days.

If you look at the games list there's plenty there where you wouldn't need any modern hardware, so it's fine to have a cheaper option tbh

It depends on the games. But we've stress tested all the games we run tournaments for and all the PCs run great.

We spec everything for 1080p gaming, and honestly the 3060 is ample for your average multiplayer experience (you'd be surprised how well the GTX1650 holds up as well). We'd love to up-gun them in the future though.

Did you look at the list of the games?

My guess is that there has just been a bit of a disconnect in what's being talked about.

There is a big difference between what's required for single player AAA titles, and eSports/LAN games.

Of course if you want to play Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, etc. at 4k or something, then I'd agree that you probably want something way higher spec. But for playing Age of Empires, Counter Strike, Rocket League, etc. these PCs are more than ample.

Does nsw has any LẦN parties?

+1 for running cool things like this!

It's important to keep the gamin/esports/lan for fun scenes alive!

  • Every time I see these posts it makes me really happy. Great memories of monster lan back in the day, dodgeball, leeching, and maybe a bit of gaming :D Am glad Sydney has DadLAN (some familiar faces in those photos!)

Saw a new guitar hero instrument in EB, and am crossing both fingers for a bit of a revival of in-person social gaming. Love jumping on forti and discord with mates, but nothing captures the good vibes and energy of a good, big LAN.

Awesome idea with PC hire, keep up the good work!!

  • Question regarding PC hire, does it come with the games pre-installed and ready to go?

Looks like I'll finally be able to make it this time! I'm very excited, I haven't been to a lan party since high school!

    • +1

Hey, games won't be pre-installed, but we have a LAN Cache that locally hosts all the games we run tournaments for, plus a bunch of others. So you can generally install games like CS2, Rocket League, etc. in a matter of minutes.

      • That makes sense, the logistics + cost of having everything licensed and installed is not trivial.

I'll bring my laptop in, can I hire the lowest end PC and just use the monitor with my laptop? or is there a way to just hire a monitor? Not about the cost, just in case if the computer can be helpful to someone else.

        • Hey yeah for sure. You could buy the cheapest rental PC and just use the monitor. Unfortunately no way to just rent a monitor at the moment (we wouldn't be able to make it any cheaper than the cheapest rental anyway).

  • Are console gamers welcome? I gather there will be less games available and we can BYO Xbox but would need to rent an PC anyway for the monitor?

    • +2

Yeah 100%. On the website you can see the schedule and there is ever a little toggle to see which games will work depending on which console you bring. A lot of the games are cross-play compatible so you should have no issues.

The one thing I'd suggest is making sure you have the games installed the night before, as we can't cache games on consoles. We do have gigabit internet, so small updates and whatnot are fine, but games like Halo are pretty big so best to already have it downloaded.

  • Are you still doing the side events like chess comp and Nintendo Switch games comps?

  • Looks like a great idea.
