    $288 free delivery(selected cities only)

    • Oh, it was $310 last night in Appliance Central. Thanks

  • I need a new microwave to replace an aging Panasonic that has peeling internal layer.

I need some real-world user opinions on flatbed vs turntable?

    Pricing about the same (~$300)

I have a turnable Panasonic for 9 years, still working great, that makes I think Panasonic Microwave is durable. I read a lot of reviews, and they recommend the Flatbed one, so I decided to buy this one, will let you know after another 9 years.

    • +8

I have this microwave (or at least its earlier version assuming there's been an update over the years). Can't for the life of me recall how long ago I bought it, but it was definitely pre-Covid.

      Pros

      • Does what you would expect it to do
      • More than enough functions to suit most needs
      • Cleaning is a breeze with the flat bed. IMHO, the best feature of this microwave.

      Cons

      • Internal light is not great. Seems to be a single, white LED, but does not illuminate the interior particularly well. Not a deal-breaker IMHO.
      • Arguably, doesn't cook as evenly given the lack of turntable moving things around. In saying that, it does beep periodically through the heating cycle as a prompt to move whatever you've got in there. Again, not a deal-breaker, but definitely not 100% set and forget.
      • Whilst the microwave itself is still functioning as expected, I am seeing issues with the switch that detects the door has been closed. Resulting behaviour is that the microwave won't start up, so you need to open the door and close it harder (i.e. slam it shut) and then it recognises the door has closed. This is the single-biggest issue I've noted.

In summary, I'd buy this microwave again for the right price.

I have a flat bed microwave, will never go back to a turntable one. Easy to clean and will even take a pizza box if you want to reheat pizza,

    • Bought one a few months ago. I'd say it's OK definitely doesn't reheat evenly unless you open and move it. Don't bother trying to do dumplings as a quick feed or anything similar. The built in defrost may as well just be Cook. There are definitely probably a few other things I can't think of now either. However if you learn to move shit if you're reheating and from now on actually steam things instead of using a microwave it's still just OK

  • Perfect $288 thanks a lot

amazon doesn't like regional people using microwaves. marking it as temperately out of stock for my postcode is simply lying.

    • +3

It sounds absurd, but come to find out, you are absolutely right.

    • +3

Amazon don't like regional folk for everything nowadays, it's mentioned in most Amazon deals now where it's magically out of stock for those postcodes.

    • +1

I use a Melbourne address until checkout, where you can swap to a regional one and finish the order.

      • doesn't work anymore. Nasty red writing everywhere!

Peeling internal layer: likely moisture damage so keep new one moisture free internally: even dry with a tea towel after use. (Same thing happened to our Panasonic microwave and when i researched it, it was commonly agreed that it was moisture damage).

Re flatbed: what happens with spillage/overflow? The carousel acts as a reservoir for these misha[s, bit not sure what happens without this feature.

    • Re flatbed: what happens with spillage/overflow? The carousel acts as a reservoir for these misha[s, bit not sure what happens without this feature.

The flatbed itself is slightly recessed, so unless you have a massive spillover, there shouldn't be any issues.

    • Leave the door open after using to let any steam dry out .

This is also a good rule for washing machines as well as draining the tub everytime ,
unless you like washing in your stinky old water .

  • Apparently in the flat bed there are more moving parts as the microwave discharging element moves to cook food evenly.
Some say it takes longer, others say its evenly heated
A few threads over al whirlpool forums. Also the larger 32 litre with crousel is $10 extra.

As someone who cooks a lot of noodles I wouldn’t buy a microwave without an extraction fan as they tend to hold moisture and die quickly. I’m not sure if this one has a fan though

    • This Sharp model has a fan inside of it. Not sure about the Panasonic though.

    • Don't quote me, but I think it does have an extractor. At the end of the heating/cooking cycle, it does stay running longer for a "cooling" cycle and it certainly sounds like a fan is running.

    • It has a fan but not sure its doing extracting enough. Every time I cook noodles I have to wipe the condensation.

  • Never mind, different model.

Too many microwave options at all price points. I do want to upgrade my Breville because I find it is slow at heating compared with my parent's ancient Sharp one but need access to the Choice review article to decide

Super happy I ditched the carousel… this is the best microwave I've ever had. Food is even

  • Back to the future. My First microwave was a flat bed. I saw these used at Hungry Jacks and Maccas so I thought well if they are using them.

Then when when it was time to replace it, I could not find a flat bed for love or money. Now them seem to be back in fashion.

Currently have a Panasonic Inverter with turn table.

  • I own this micro for ages, here's some more information about the flatbed.

You can remove it for maintenance but it shouldn't be necessary. The flatbed itself is a recessed sheet of metal panel that has a rubber edging strip around the outside. It's tight friction fit into the base and therefore can actually be removed. I've done it, well I've put it back in because mine was popped up due to some rough shipping (I presume). What's underneath is a metal fin right in the middle. It's this fin part that turns and reflects the microwaves for cooking.

A few years ago this microwave had a low review, mostly it's from people of questionable intellect. They didn't realise that after countdown hits zero and the door is closed again after cooked food is taken out the fan comes on for a bit to vent moist air. They assumed it was continuing heating operations and therefore faulty.

  • Have they improved the flatbeds? I bought one ages ago and they were very apparent hot and cold spots so I exchanged it for a turntable.
