Not a bad product design to be honest.
I already did that a few years back with my favourite power board, and chopped off the plug end and changed it so that I could plug in any IEC cable in the world.
Then you'll need to travel with a cable. IMHO, cube design is the most practical.
Fair enough. Having been to a few hotel rooms or airports with piss poor outlet placement, I am glad sometimes I have that extra bit of cable length to reach around.
Cube design is my go-to. Have the Allocococ cube plus a compact international adapter from Orico.
I swear Bunnings had something similar to think (potentially "click" brand) for sale over a year ago for $10 or $6. I grabbed one but should have grabbed more. It was 2 ac plugs, 2x USBA and 2x USBC, same shaped alternative plugs like OP's, very thick cable. (This is exactly what it is but is branded as a click item.)
Could have been a one-off promotional item that Bunnings does every now and then. The Officeworks item looks identical to this Aldi Bauhn adaptor, so they've probably all come out of the same Chinese factory just with different printing on them… if so, it's a pity the Aldi one doesn't also have a PD USB-C port. As others have said, 5v 4.5a is pretty piss-weak these days, especially given it has 4 ports on it. I like the design of these but can't justify it given the only place I go / have been travelling is Bali, and adapter's are only a couple of dollars each.
They (Bunnings) did. I grabbed 3 of them when there were there. Has USB PD20 on one of the USB C ports too, so that makes the Click version is better than Aldi.
Actually its PD30 on the bunnings one. I found another set for $9.80 at Bunnings Cannon Hill today. Never thought i'd see another one.
What will be the output of the ports ? Can all the ports do 100w if connected to a right cable ?
USB/USB-C output
DC 5V, total 4.5A Max.
2400w over 240v
5V with 4.5Amps doesn't really cut it these days, but I guess it depends on how much gear you have. Sure you could work with it, but I wouldn't both to buy a new device with such low outputs.
I think there is one at Kmart with all USB A and a total of 4Amps output for about $17. No power board section though.
was thinking the same thing. this would only be good for overnight charging, plugging two modern phones into this would what charge it 20% in an hour?
Be aware that although they label one of the adapters as ‘US/JPN’, it is a 3-pin plug and thus not useable in most Japanese power sockets, which are usually 2-pin. In Japan you typically only see 3-pin sockets in kitchen/laundry spaces for use with appliances that need grounding.
Was going to say the same. That plug is not going to work in most outlets in Japan.
Pretty weak usb output IMHO (22.5w max).
Much better to get a Zyron.
Does Zyron make one like this ? I thought they just has GaN chargers for USB - never seen one with 240V outlets as well - got a link ?
No they don't. I really only value the usb ports and 22.5w max just doesn't cut it for me.
For normal appliances i just use a $1 converter and job's done :D
What would you recommend for Japan?
Bought a couple of simple lightweight 2 pin Korjo Japan Travel Adaptors from Amazon last week for $9 each. Work in the US/Canada as well. Only have a 2 pin inlet but nothing I take o/s has 3 pins. Means I can just take my existing anker fast charger with me.
Yeah - this product is a no for me. My travel solution is to power everything off a multi-port USB charger. That only needs 2-pin mains international plugs so is more compatible.
To become a USB-only traveller I've needed to buy some special adapters for electric-toothbrush charging and electric-shaver charging.
A lot of older US power sockets are still 2-pin as well
Beauty of it being an IEC C13 is you can just grab a 2 pin cable at Daiso and be on your way https://www.comtop.com/10w1-162xx
Especially good in Japan since the pathetic weak American style outlets can't hold up the weight of most USB adaptors or universal adaptors
Note that the ‘2-pin’ cable you have linked to there has an earth lead, which is to be connected to the earth screw terminal on older earthed Japanese power sockets for appliances. See image 1 here, the earth terminal is under the little flap at the bottom of the wall plate (shown open and connected to an adapter in image 3).
The IEC C13 connector is for Appliance Class I appliances, i.e. those that require earthing. Plugging a Class I appliance in without connecting that ground lead is potentially dangerous if the appliance has a fault.
I have this and have used it in Sri Lanka and Europe. It works well.
The black Blaupunkt from OW is much better than this, but it is $55. It at least has PD30W. The white Blaupunkt at OW is like this ($35) but no PD.
I just bought the Blaupunkt PD30W one from OW;
https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/blaupunkt-…
Not on sale though at $55.
It looks similar to the Aldi one - the major differences are that it has one USB-C PD30W port and one USB-15W port (not at the same time - I think 30W max.), as well as two USB-A ports. It also has an input voltage from 110V to 240V so it can safely be used in US etc - obviously it doesn't convert 110V to 240V so 240V appliances wouldn't work, but the "240V" Aus outlets could be used for laptop, shaver, toothbrush, camera etc chargers that can operate on the lower voltage.
It does not have surge protection so it (theoretically) could be used on cruise ships, though that may depend on the staff scanning the bags YMMV.
So, while it is $25 more than the Aldi one, it may be potentially more useful due to the PD30W and 110/115V support.
This is identical to a "Click 2 x outlet travel kit with USB" Bunnings had on clearance for $10.00 for a while. I just found another one for $9.80 today. Not many left
This is cheap but quite bulky compared to something like a Zyron Powerpod with it's travel adapters.
Not sure how the reliability compares
Clicked on the sale for 4 September
And got myself educated with what a 'Fat Quarter' was.
Fat? Can we still say that word, is it allowed?
Saying fat is phat, yo.
I usually just use a figure 8 cord for that country's plug on my existing fast charger, much faster than this. Also a xiaomi powerboard+ adaptor
Got 1 a few years ago, taken it to numerous countries and it’s been great.
"Infamous travel adapter kit"
Thanks for the warning.
Curious, what do people use the AC sockets for? Laptop chargers and camera charger? BYO a separate USB charger?
I just need a 2 port USB charger and a camera charger so this seems a bit overkill (and doesn't have PD).
It's all about the toaster mate
My guess would be CPAP machine, hair straightener, annoying products that don't charge over USB
Like an electric toothbrush - fairly common travel item.
Have traveled with this numerous times, it's great. The extension lead makes it much more accessible than the other "brick" converters out there.
Recommend Lencent 20W (1xUSBC/A) all in one adaptor for how small and cheap it is. Some discussion about lencent quality being naff
i find this type often doesnt connect well on some looser wall plugs. as soon as it isnt perfectly plugged in it loses connection. have you had that experience with yours?
I haven't no but ive only had it in Aus sockets here in NZ but its definitely a little loose. no issue being plugged into a strip board jammed behind a mattress so a cable could reach my side of the bed.
what makes it INfamous?
The infamous bit is that it catches out travellers with 240v-only appliances who plug it into a 120v outlet when travelling. And then set their hairdryer on fire or something.
Suitable for use in over 150 countries
Which countries won’t it work in?
Plenty - India, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, Switzerland, Italy, Chile, Denmark to mention a few. Many countries use more than one plug style. There is 195 "recognised" countries.
This adapter (like many) only covers the main 4 types of plugs. This link lists 15 types of plugs;
https://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/
even though it includes a US plug for some nice fireworks lol
USA use half the voltage, so no fireworks…
It will allow you to plug in something like you laptop charger, which can work at 120V
Worked well for me when I traveling through Europe last year.
Aldi's infamous travel adaptor kit is back
I see this quite a bit now. 'Infamous' is not a good thing. And is not a synonym for 'famous'.
'Flammable', on the other hand, is a synonym for 'inflammable'. Go figure.
Inflammable means flammable? What a country!
Does anyone know if there is one similar to this in stock in Brisbane?
I recall seeing a few on amazon, now I can't find these power board type ones anywhere.
Previously I used one of those cube type ones with all the options, but the hairdryer was used and destroyed it.
I picked one of these up yesterday, and after getting it home realised that the 4 plugs are extremely heavy - overall probably too heavy for me to cart around europe. Perhaps if I was travelling by car everywhere or going on a cruise it would be ok, but it's probably just too much weight and bulk. I'm trying to slim down the packing and bringing this will also encourage bringing things to plug into it.
I'm going to go for a plug adaptor and 4 port usb charger instead. Keep the phones and cameras going.
my 2c for those still considering.. :)
