Best/Cheapest Way to Stay Connected in NZ

It’s close to 20 years since I’ve travelled overseas, and the rest of the family haven’t ever so we’re planning a trip to NZ later in the year.

We all have roaming on our phones but at $5/day for each of us it will be over $350 for the trip and I’m thinking there must be a cheaper alternative.

We all have iPhones either with physical or eSIMs so what do folks better travelled than us recommend?

    1. Find a deal on a local sim
    2. Check out you have access to free esims - 28 degrees, Nord VPN
    3. Fine a dedicated eSim provider
    • I do subscribe to Nord and wasn’t aware they had an eSIM option. I’ll check it out thanks

  • You have not stated your current provider. Optus, amaysim, boost, telstra prepaid, felix roaming all have cheaper roaming than $5/day.
You may also consider porting to these also for your Australian use

    • Our current provider is Vodafone. Optus reception is rubbish where we live so have ruled them out and Telstra is more expensive from what I’ve seen but will check out some of the other providers

  • Most times there is no need for the entire family connected to internet on the go, one can get esim and the rest with hotel wifi or elsewhere whenever available or hotspot.

  • I found this the other day https://www.traveltomtom.net/destinations/oceania/new-zealan…
Nomad seems to be the best esim, allot cheaper than any nz providers

    70 day trip?

How much data do you want?

    Lots of options here

    • No, 24 day trip and there’s 3 of us

      • No, 24 day trip and there’s 3 of us

Your wording wasn't clear as you said 'each of us'.

Anyhow, there are heaps of 30 day sim options in that case.

        • Yeah sorry realised that after your comment.

Will check out some of the options provided but sounds like the roaming is not the way to go or maybe it works out but only for shorter trips

          • @Breddo: Depends on what you need. If it's just data, then get a local sim. Always cheaper!

But If you need to continue to receive and make phone calls for your Aussie number daily, then paying the daily roaming fee might be better.
